Nice! I have a 1937 Raleigh with rod operated drum brakes. They're pretty efficient because they don't get affected by the weather like a brake operating on the rim. I just love the action of the old rod system, a beautiful piece of engineering!
Rod brakes were still found on production bicycles into the 1980's. Raleigh didn't stop making the DL-1 until 1985. The Eastman DL-1 made in India (old Raleigh tooling) and the Flying Pigeon bicycles made in China are still made today with the same rod-operated brakes. They are not as bad as people make them out to be - people are often making this comparison with modern disc-brakes which are completely overkill for most purposes.
As the only thing countering the pushing forces from the brake is the spoke tension, ALWAYS make sure your spokes are well tensioned. Well tensioned spokes give a more solid feel too.

Great video.
It's very hard to get those rod brakes on the left side to work.
They severely limit the bicycle's turning capability since the rod is inflexible. In the end the rod gets bent and you have to readjust the brake.
