  • Instead of reversing the direction of the wrap-around step of the loop-making stage of the bow as Terry says, you can switch which lace goes over and which goes under in the first stage of the bow. When I cross the laces (the very first step), I put the right lace below (closer to the toe) the left lace, so I have to reverse the direction of the wrap-around step to get a strong knot. When I put the right lace ABOVE the left, I can make the loop in my usual manner and still get the strong knot.

  • He gets a TED for giving an overly-complicated solution to a simple problem. The simple solution is to start with the initial overhand knot left over right, instead of right over left,as he does. After the initial left-over-right overhand, he can tie the rest of the knot as usual and wind up with the proper reef knot with release loops. I hope I didn't unchange his life.

  • Fuck this I will never be able to learn this fuck.

  • This is why I buy shoes that you dont have to tie

  • It's easier if you tie the first knot the other way around and then keep tying the bow the same way you always have done.

There is a better way to tie this knot too. Look up the Ian knot.

  • i tried the "so called " correct way to tie a shoe , it does look better and is a better knot , other then that, i dont really care how its done, cuz i double ties my knots any ways , unless they are dress shoes , glad i now know the strong way

  • its the same knot. tie it as usual then twist your tied bow 180 degrees and you have his knot that now doesnt rotate as you pull.

  • Who knew that shoes could be so scientific?

  • I don't understand how anyone could tie their shoes the 1st way, it feels so unnatural and I have to make a conscience effort. Probably habit.

  • I'm left handed and i double knot.

  • Thumbs up if you have one shoe on right now

  • i've been making the loop in my right hand and going over with the other which creates the strong knot my whole life and i didnt even realize.

  • LEFTIES UNITE!

  • i tie my shoes waaaaaaaaaaaaaay different lol. i learned by myself :|

  • Im from Europe and that's how they taught us to tie our shoes...

  • @ReinyGreen And you speak for everyone in Europe?

  • He must have failed the knot-tying segment of Boy Scouts. All you have to do is make your first knot the correct way. For right-handed - left lace over right, then make loop with left lace, wrap right lace around... or all vice versa for lefties... he was starting right over left, which made a granny knot instead of a square knot. I can't believe this was seen as worthy of a TED presentation.

  • @changescome3 It doesn't matter if you're left handed or fucking right handed. Both hands are used to hold each lace. It matters what you do with the laces, and which hand you make a loop with. But both hands still have a job to do, so it shouldn't matter if you're lefty or righty. The first part you have to go right lace over left lace... then make a loop with your left hand and go over that loop with the right hand. Or every instruction vice versa if you prefer to loop with your right

  • @urwholefamilydied That's exactly what I said. The only reason I mentioned handedness is because lefties generally do it one way (the way he says we should), and righties the other (the way he says we have been). This guy is telling us to tie it the way lefties would, instead of just fixing the first knot to suit tying it the way we have been.

  • @changescome3 good call... sorry. Yeah, we're totally on the same page with this. It's embarrassing that this guy has a ted video.

  • damn, I can't see clearer how he ties those. The camera should have been filming directly. Not on the side. I really want to know how to do this

  • You can do this with the double loop method as well, as long as the first and the second knot aren't made the same way round.

  • "Ian knot" is way neater. Faster to tie as well.

  • I liked the part where he tied the shoe.

  • this changes everything!!!!!

  • How in the hell the guy even makes the weak form... I can't reproduce it :I

  • Haha I'm a lefty and I've been tying my shoes this way my whole life. Succkkeerrss

  • @duffmanjunior same thing for me too. I think we are just Fuck ups and do everything our own way regardless if it's right or wrong.

  • I always tie my shoes like that anyway! Does that make me a genius or a retard? Wait don't answer that.

  • Is there something else than 2:48 what you should watch?

  • holy shit

  • I learned this in scouts.

  • Weak knot = granny knot

    Strong knot = reef knot

  • I tie my shoe laces in a completely different way anyway. I have this way where i kind off ''double'' tie my shoe laces in a symetrical manner so that it creates a really strong knot.

  • an easier way to correct the knot would be to simply reverse the over/under of the base knot.

  • Fortunately when my mom was teaching me the first way I kept headbutting her while she sat behind me, so she ended up teaching me by sitting in front of me, which made me do it backwards or in this case "the strong" knot.

  • the problem is easier to fix by switching the direction of the first cross-over. if you start to tie your shoe with the left lace crossing over the right to make your "X" then your first loop must be made on the left. You don't have to switch the side you do your fist loop on, just switch which lace is on top of the "X" at the beginning; easy.

  • i suppose you could say most of us were...

    *puts on sunglasses*

    ....out of the loop

    YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • @OneWayRoad I hate this fucking video... this guy gets a ted conference and didn't even do his research or experiment... he bases his information on what some guy at footlocker told him. Well both of those idiots are wrong. It depends on how you tie the first part of the knot (before the loop action). If the first part of the knot is left lace over right lace, then you can proceed as normally taught. If it's the right over left then you have a problem. Where's my fucking TED video?

  • @urwholefamilydied calm down dude, how long is the video?

  • @Serpico261 the video is two minutes and fifty-nine seconds... you're welcome. It's right on the screen btw, so I cheated. Should I tie your shoes for you too?

  • @urwholefamilydied ahh shut the fuck up

  • @OneWayRoad haha awesome comment

  • Oh yeah and as a a kid I would tie my shoe and it would only have one loop and where there should of been another loop I would just tuck it into my shoe. After I turned 5 five is when i started the double loop method because I could not understand how to do it the proper way. To this day I still get crap from people.

  • I just use the double loop method... make two loops and then tie them together.

  • @earthjin2000 It's the same knot. For the strong form, tie the left loop from behind the right instead of the front.

  • what...ive been tying my shoe laces the first way and yes, its shit, i could never do it the secnd way like everyone i knew.....so i had to opt for the first way and be a freak...and now i find out im doing it like everyone else?? lol

  • Wow life changing stuff! Who needs a cure for cancer when you have this!

  • I use the bunny ears method myself, quite effective my knots haven't untied itself in over a year now.

  • mind blowing

  • I'm left handed and i learned to tie my shoes just like that (the 2nd way). And others who did it wrong (also my 1st grade teacher) told me that i was wrong... Now i can stop being sad and concentrate to be awesome instead...

  • Since when is there a "correct" way to do it? I do it the apparently "incorrect" way...and guess what? My shoes don't come untied. So it is CORRECT for the purpose.

And no social outcast 40 year old virgin is going to make me thing otherwise.

  • whats the point, nothing makes sense anymore, my whole understanding of life has radically been changed, because i never learned how to tie my shoes correctly.

  • That's how I've always tied my shoes, trying to do it the first way feels really unco

  • Why is James Lipton talking about tying shoes?

  • I put a twist in the laces as I'm tying the knot. I can't really describe it, but it's not like either of the knots shown here.

  • The Boy Scouts who are paying attention will recognize the "strong" knot as being a simple square knot. Right over left and then left over right. The weak knot is also known as a "granny" knot which is what you get if you mis-tie the square knot.

  • I've always tied my laces that way, I didn't know there was another way of doing it.

  • How many people actually untied and re-tied their shoes after watching this? Just me?

  • So, we left-handed people have less broken legs on average, but live shorter lives, just cause the way we tie our shoes? Woa!!

  • holi shit i tie my knots left handed!

  • you have destroyed my childhood

  • who gives a fuck.

  • @Juseitup Maybe you should watch another channel. TED is for people who are curious and enjoy learning.

  • Dude, I've been tying my shoes correctly my whole life. I feel awesome now.

  • reddit is lame

  • usual autistic reddit lifehacks

  • i just tuck the laces into my sock

  • My life has never been so complete

  • I feel as though I've been lied to my entire life. From now on, only success and tied shoes for me!

  • Thumbs up if you already tie your laces this way.

  • I thought everyone ties their shoes this way. What the heck did everyone else learn?

And yes, the double know/never untie is awesome. I haven't had to tie my shoes in half a year.

  • You could also tie the first twist the other way

  • Fuck this shit. BuNnY eArS 4 LyFe.

  • DOES BUNNY EARS. DOES NOT CARE.

  • WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?

  • What are shoes?

  • This is why I still use velcro straps on my sneakers

  • I've been doing it right the whole time because I'm boss.

  • I don't tie my shoes ether way...

  • Search the "Ian knot". It's a much faster way to make a bow on shoes.

  • Holy fuck

  • yeah just double knot them. what's so hard about that? i've never had my shoelaces come undone on my sneakers like ever. The only thing about double knots is that it put a little wear on the heel as you slip them on and off and it loosens up a bit. So if you're doing sports which involve lots of running, you'd have to untie and retie the knot once in a while.

Oh and dress shoes are a different story though.

  • @wutdaFU3K dude i just make it so the laces go inside my shoes, then i tie them inside and so the laces wont be on the outside and all i have to do is slip them on bascially, why do not much people know this??

  • we are all dumb

  • just waht i need, some uppity bitch telling me he knows better

  • never stop learning

  • omfg

  • its called a square knot. who the fuck hasnt heard of a square knot.

  • 1 word slip-ons.

  • Nice watch.

  • That Rolex Submariner is blinding. Too much lens flare.

  • never tie shoes ever

  • @RTrevorCollins Shut the fuck up asshat

  • TED Talks: Where doctors, scientists, engineers, philanthropists and this fucking shoe lace guy get together to spread ideas

  • I always thought I was crazy tying my shoes that way. Now I know I always tied them RIGHT!

  • ....I've always tied them like this......

  • Give him his Stapler back.

  • Wait, I've never learned how to do it the first way. I just make two loops and tie those together.

  • @dpq06 So do I.

  • @dpq06 Ah, the "bunny rabbit's ears" method.

  • @dpq06 wooo im not the only one

  • @dpq06 did you learn that from spongebob?

  • Nice! Now show me the correct way for velcro!!!

  • Mind = blown.

  • I just double knot...They've never come untied by themselves once in my entire life.

  • I don't know if its because I am a leftie or what, but I have been tying my shoes like this for a while.

  • Comment removed

  • Loop dee loop and pull, now your shoes are looking good.

  • good to know I already mastered this at young age

  • uhm... his hands are covering the most important part so is there a better tutorial somewhere else? or at least what is the name of this knot?

  • You mean people HAVEN'T been tying their shoes this way?

  • I figured this out on my own... when i was.. uh.... 6 ..... not impressed

  • I still do the bunny ears method >_<

  • I have always just tied my shoe laces with a double knot. Problem solved, 3 second less play time when we had a break in school though :/

  • fake

  • my life has been a lie

  • That's how I've always tied them! People made fun of me for years but now I know I was right, thanks Terry Moore.

  • TIL I tie my shoes like no one else does

  • It's technically a square/granny knot, and the second way he shows is the correct way, that's what my father showed me, then again, he's a boater

  • Did they all really just clap when he tied shoes? And this is suppose to be thought provoking intellectual presentations? They need a new crowd.

  • slip ons ftw

  • Sometimes this guy sounds like Cartman "Shouuuse" ;D

  • @copperkipper1 & ALL YOU OTHER LEFT HANDERS AT LEAST WE DONT DONT HAVE TO USE OUR PINKY FINGER TO CLICK ON THE MOUSE LOL

  • @knowcredibility Nope. I'm left handed but use my right hand on my mouse & hold it just the same way you do.Infact There are multiple ways to hold a mouse. bieng a gamer I can identify 2 ways. "claw" "palm" , me bieng more of a palm grip, .. So to clarify I don't use my pinky finger on my left mouse button. Also "DONT HAVE TO USE OUR PINKY FINGER" how is this any disadvantage, I'm sure any gamer has a greater 'mouse handling' skill than a non-gamer... Argument over. :)

  • Double knot, and never untie them again.

  • @Thebatterside I put muh laces inside muh shews den i just tie dem and den i double knot so that i can just slip on meh shews :3

  • @Thebatterside nerd alert

  • @Thebatterside I double knot. =D. FTW

  • I've been tying my shoes wrong for 17 years o.o

  • I just double knot and don't bother tying or untying them for several months at a time.

  • i feel handicaped after wathcing this

  • It's easier to change the first part of the knot prior to the bow. Instead of over under go under over (or vice versa) and just continue the bow portion the way you've always done it.

  • I still use the bunny ear method...

  • "Hey guys what should we record while he is doing the most important part?" "QUICK GET AN AUDIENCE SHOT!"

  • Pssshhhh, I don't have any legs.

  • two loops + tie em + repeat = never fails

  • @Konkaver Velcro, what a rip-off.

  • Comment removed

  • I was trying to think of how I do my knots, but then I realized I do straight bar lacing with permanent knots... Look it up on "Ian's Shoelace Site". With the exception of sports shoes, there's a million better ways to lace your shoes for aesthetics and comfort as opposed to the regular way. Yeah, I'm a shoelace hipster... bitch

  • I want 2:59 of my life back. kthxbye.

  • That was really disappointing to find out I've always done it the right way. My shoes still come untied. I demand a better knot!

  • MIND = BLOWN.

    Reddit was here.

  • @Konkaver Velcro? That's uncool even for kids these days :)

  • I make the first loop on the right side, not the left side (as shown in the video).

But basically, the trick is to extract the second loop to away of me rather to the side of me, right?

  • I CANT DO IT

  • I am left handed so I have done it that way all my life. Feels good man

  • I followed the instructions in the video and my life has gotten better. I'm now a CEO of a semi-conductor manufacturing company.

  • I've been doing it correctly my whole life!

  • I've tied my shoe like that without your help Mr. and there is no "right" way to tie your shoe..

  • I tie the two loop knot twice. I have to tie my shoes at least once a year.

  • this is so much slower than Ian's Knot

  • The hell, I've never seen anyone tie their shoes this way lol. It's always been this double loop thing coming together, where is it that people tie their shoes like that lol.

  • Huzzah! I've been getting it right for 10 years! (I'm 15)

  • ...just lost 3 mins of my life on this shit

  • Always use double knots because that's what clever people do. but no he ain't going to tell you that.... you'd be too succesfull in life.

  • ...but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...

  • how does something like this get almost 300k views?

  • @unavailable20 Because it's a easy-to-understand video that helps the everyday person look at a menial task in a new light. There should be more TED videos like this that teach practical lessons.

  • You don't have to loop the opposite way, just do that first entanglement of the strings opposite. It has to do with which string is on top and which is on bottom in that initial entanglement. I'd think after 50 years a life skill a man should have nailed is how to properly tie knots.

  • Says shoes were "expensive for him"---wears Rolex

  • Tha fuck??............ TED talks has gone to shit, and so has the crowd

  • @utsawin09 I think you need to learn to read descriptions.

  • @utsawin09 One thing that you didn't know prior watching this video dated 2005 has made you a total scenic.

  • Lefty FTW...

  • ....or you can just double-knot it.

  • @thinker93 not if you're over the age of 5.

  • @Fashish lol!

  • I dont get it, that is how you naturally tie your shoes... and I have never did it the 'wrong way'. Really dont get it.
