Any type of magnet will work, however, the stronger the pull the more material it will remove. This Heavy Hitter sluice magnet is full of round rare earth magnets, so it's got a LOT of pull. I have taken to mostly using this sluice magnet not in the sluice, but in the 1/2 inch classifier before sluicing. I hand shovel material over it , remove the magnetite, and then sluice. It was cutting off the water flow so much in my sluice, letting the riffle bars clog up and not run clean. Randy C-17A
How far should the magnet go in the water? it seems like that much magnetite would slow down the flow too much. I too prospect the NF of clear creek, and I write about my trips out to this spot and others on rockymtntreasures.blogspot.com , check it out and see what you think
Looks like the magnet was almost overworked, lots of magnatite.............and since gold usually deposits with heavy material you must have found some good gold.
It's a neat item...still trying to figure out how to best use it so it gets the magnatite out and doesn't overly restrct the water flow thru the sluice. I may need to actually mount it up more forward in the flair just before the drop off into the deep well. Randy "C-17A"

can any type of magnet work? or do you need a really strong one to find the iron in the sand?
