Hate to be that guy, but Crown DOES have the best sounding hornline, and yes FINIS is a perect example. Phantom has a great hornline, but its not the same. Their hornline is distinct; when you hear it, you know its phantom, ( their sound matches their name, its great.) Crown has the most round. luscious, deep awesome sounds in DCI, at least in my opinion.
@Sohrin305 Thanks for not being that jerk that bashes the other bands here and there throughout their comment. I personally like Phantoms better because when you hear it you know its them, but that's just me.
@MrGuitar144 When I hear Phantom, my hair goes up. I just KNOW its them, its so... menacing. In a good way. Same with Crown, but for other reasons. It is a very subjective thing, sound is. I mean we ALL like different sounds. Note that Phantom is also one of my favorites. I mean we can't complain about about other corps sounds. I am playing mello right now for Band of the Hour, which compared to a corps is nothing. keep it up mellos! :)
Next time, be sure to keep your knees straight when marching. I went to one of their camps and that was my only problem really, my high school did a lot of bending at times and I wasn't necessarily used to the straight legged style. Playing was pretty good, just make sure you double check specific articulations, it may have just been the copy of Mozart 3 in Eb you had. Watch the tone also, don't let it get too airy. Great job! Just some friendly tips. XP
How competitive was it for the mello section? I'm a 6 year clarinet player, and played mello for a year and a half. I'm not a bad mello player, but I have trouble with hitting the right partials all the time and lip slurring, but my marching is top notch. I'm thinking about auditioning for next season. Any tips, too?
I'm not a mello player, but stood behind them until last month when I was cut (2nd baritone). But they're fucking good, not gonna lie. It seems really competitive seeing as how the mellos always hold the counter-melody. They're parts are just insane sometimes.
You should've auditioned Phantom since they're closer. They sound like a marching chainsaw. You probably could've made that. They need decent players. 1st to 9th? How does that happen?
@RCWilhite Phantom has a very rounded and "Nice" tone. Crown has an amazing power that most corps lack, listen to "Finis". Perfect example, the impact is nothing short of astounding. It depends on what you want and or like to hear, but in my opinion Crown is a lot better.

@RCWilhite Phantom does have the best horline in DCI.....if you like listening to 72 chainsaws. I prefer my hornlines balanced and controlled, like Crown, Blue Stars, and BD.
@euphmmx you are fucking high if you think that. Just listen to phantom's dark colors. there so distinctive, there like orgasms in the ears. every freaking note. BD is just damn high trumpets. and crown is good. but not as good as phantom. and blue stars, im sorry, suck...
@11armand24 No...I'm not fucking high. You just don't know good musicianship when you see it. Phantom sounds like 72 chainsaws and that's all there is to it. So fuck off, pretty please?
@euphmmx you call BD's hornline controlled???
Funniest thing I've EVER heard

Saw the Crowns live this year on a marching band trip.
They really o have the best horn line (coming from a mello player)

Crowns horn are the best. Blue Coats Tubas are the best. Phantoms Euphs and Baris are the best. Trumpet, meh, idk.

@euphmmx BD blares grossly. they are most definitely overrated.

@losingitrush Ok, dude. BD only has like one of the highest, if not the highest, number of brass titles in the world.

Was their decision mostly based on music? or movement?

@aolyahoo Music. they needed a lead and I'm a great 2nd.....just not a lead.
marcusman612 1 year ago
Actually, both. They required you to play sections of the music while marching in a box.
