Amazing! My God. This is SP on SOUND film, no less -- a scarcer find than Shostakovich in the same format. Whoever discovered this is a true archaeologist. My thanks.
To see the master perform, even in a small room, is amazing! My teacher, Adele Marcus, told me she heard Prokofiev play his Third Concerto in New York in 1921. Gershwin must have been there, as he frequented NY concerts--compare the piano entry in Prokofiev's 3rd, second movement, to the opening of Rhapsody in Blue of 1924!
It is a rare treasure to see Prokofiev playing the piano and then hearing him speak, even if those of us who don't speak Russian can't understand him. At least we now know what he sounded like and how he played. There are all too few commercial recordings of him playing the piano: the June 1932 British recording of his third piano concerto and some short solo pieces recorded in 1935.
Absolutaly SUPER to see my favorite composer playing and talking. To hear the tone of his voice to see him move. Thanks. Gr Willem KdeJ n.b. I used it for my MySpace/prokovief
Q: Sergei Sergeyevich, maybe you'll tell our listeners about your work?
A: Well... Currently I'm working on a symphonic suite of waltzes which will include: 3 waltzes from "Cinderella", 2 from "War & Peace" and one from the film "Lermontov"... ...we recently produced in Leningrad, with great success, in which the composer Chizko distinguished himself as a tenor, wonderfully playing Pierre Bez'uhov. Besides this suite I'm writing a sonata for violin and piano, upon which completion I'll work on
the 6th symphony that I began last year. I've just finished three suits from the ballet "Cinderella", and forwarded them for signing-off by the party (note: not sure what he means by that), so - probably - we'll hear them soon at the beginning of the autumn season.
Sorry, I have it on vinyl and don't have access to a player right now, so I can't tell you exactly where it is in the opera. If you can get the entire opera, I'm sure you would enjoy lots of things in it and probably find this waltz fairly easily.
What can anyone say? This footage is as valuable as one could imagine! It is like Beethoven or Bach or Brahms playing the piano and then commenting on the music. Bravo!
@BassicStorm Is there only one work, from "classical" music, as imaginative, inventive, rich, surprising, and ... logic, like the two Prokofiev violin concertos, or his second piano concerto? Listen only to the solo cadenza of the first movement ... ( v=c0jkloUBCeg ) (5:30-9:50)
and listen to Beethoven's or Mozart's complete work loool
We must stop with the Wolfgang Ludwig superstitions

@LayLink Yeah well I'm not a big fan of Mozart, that's for sure, he's got some great pieces towards the end of his career, but it almost seems like for him it was about quantity, not quality.
Real Prokofiev ! Unbelievable !

HOLY SHIT..... I feel like I just saw a ghost. This is amazing! I had NO idea that there was footage of Prokofiev out there!

Nice posture and relaxed playing. None of those theatrics you see today, people like to entertain and do exaggerated movements, but is it necessary?

@bakbaku not a sonata for violin and piano, but a sonata for flute and piano, he told. It is not a big deal, but no skripka there!
