I love the Rationals, I played all their records out. I haven't researched this, but would love to buy a compilation or whatever is available. Yes I still buy CDs and vinyl. Thx for posting all these great Rational songs!
The Rationals are from Ann Arbor, MI. Their first label was A2 records, pronounce A squared and I bought it when it first came out. A2 is just a cute way to say Ann Arbor. To see more great bands from Ann Arbor and Michigan. just click on my name, promoguy59
Scott Morgan is the lead singer and the Rationals were a great group who also played at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. Detroit was a great place for rock in the 60's and as they say, you had to be there. I still think that this is the best version of a classic song.
saw the rationals live several times in my youth. our band covered this song in the late 60s. I lived just outside pontiac, and went to concerts every weekend. back then all the great bands came to the detroit area.My brother still has a 45 of this song .
No less an authority than the song's author, Otis Redding stated that he believed the Rationals' version was the definitive version. I would never argue with him! This is a clip from Swingin' Time, the Windsor, Ontario show hosted by the great Robin Seymour.
This is not an Arethra Franklin cover.. Get the record straight. Besides the fact that it's an Otis Redding song, The Rationals released it 1966, Franklin 67. Jerry Wexler thought the song had potential as a cross-over hit for Aretha after hearing The Ratioinals version... Detroit Rocks!
Great stuff, but this is not an Aretha Franklin cover. It's an Otis Redding cover. He wrote the song and did the original. Aretha Franklin's version came out after this one.
@727JeffN either my brain must have been on a holiday or i was drunk when i wrote that, because i know very well that this is an otis redding cover. thank you for reminding me anyway.
as a detroiter from those days I can tell you this was a hit record locally. in fact this group is one of the best that did'nt make it but should have like seger,MC5,stooges,alice cooper all did in the detroit area. best version of respect ever recorded as far as I'm concerned. in fact I'm the proud owner of an original 45 single of it. the MC5 use to play this version in concerts often.thats a tribute to the rationals.
Another "Swingin' Time" classic. I still have my "Think Rational" button.
