A classic indeed! outstanding lyrics and melody. Today the young would not like this because each time they attend a "dance" or "party" they end up having sex with each other on the dance floor; disgusting.!
@SuperSnk1 It's real Kaiso, and I adore Sparrow, but had it been me being Sparrow's bride I would have either become a Female Calypsonian one time or divorced Sparrow, this is to much presure for the poor woman.
@marledebakkerunicorn . You are 100% correct. Dis is real pressure and yer should check " Hungry Barbers and Corbeau Flying High" . Melo was real harsh on de Birdie with these also. How fortunate we were to be around at that time. Thanks.
@SuperSnk1 Yeh, I never liked that song either (Corbeau Flying High) Hungry Barbers is new to me , thanks for the tip, But let them man fight, and keep the woman and family out of it because that's not chique. But I do understand also that to you guy's it's sentiment to listen to these songs. So I feel like a partypooper. Maybe you can get me to understand.
@marledebakkerunicorn . Do not believe that these battles in Kaiso were full of hate and violence. Not one bit of that. It was simply Melo and Birdie"s way of inciting interest in the artform which in turn brought financial gains through record sales, increased attendances at Calypso shows, foreign Tours Etc. They were very close pals and it remained that way . Remember one aspect of Trini life style is giving" fatigue" to each other, we like that sort of fun just pounding each other . Thanks.
@SuperSnk1 . I hope you can understand now that these Calypsos were about fictional characters and in no way related to their real life experiences. Check Dr. Sparrow's reply to Melo in " Madam Dracula" in which he sang that every body calls Melo's wife that. AND, in another " Cowboy Melo" he sang that Melo was the father of a Calf ( Baby Cow) for the face was " Melo in Print ". They were crowd pullers and pleased their audiences who always looked forward to these battles in Kaiso.
@SuperSnk1 Thanks for getting in this discussion, love it, but............. I still think it's a man thing and I know the song "Madame Dracula" (cringes my ears too) and it took me a while to find it,but look at this interview with Sparrow: Mighty Sparrow talks about Extempo wars uploaded by IsDePanInMe . In the end of the upload he admits that it got out of hand.
I find it interesting how nowadays the dancehall artist are getting so much negative publicity for "warring" with other artists. This music clearly shows that artists having public disputes through music is a Caribbean tradition. Outsiders are commenting on Caribbean music without knowing the culture or the history.
so true ,but they never used guns and knives to kill each other for comments made in a song.after the performances they were able to drink and go home with no hard feelings between them. Can you say the same for 'warring ' caribbean artists of today??
Sparrow and Melody had a rivalry that ended at Melody's death in 1988; Sparrow has written a song on Melody's wife called Madam Dracula. they were friends and he played tribute to him after he died in "Play One for Melo"
Release dates indicate that Sparrow`s reply to this particular calypso was probably *Madam Dracula*. Other Lord Melody mentions during their years of friendly war of "taunts & insults" on vinyl are :- *Reply to Melody* - *Cowboy Melo* - *Fowl thief Melo* - *Melody Lie*.
Sounds like " Madam Dracula "

This is war real kaiso war between Mello and Birdie. Ammunition galore from both sides. That's the beauty of Kaiso.
