  • Concerning the black guy, it isn't just that he was the lead. Moreover it had the guy telling off the white folks in the movie and ordering them around. Saying things to them like "Shut up!!" "You take orders from ME!! I'm boss up here!!" "You wana go to that cellar then GIT!!" "I'll drag you out there and feed you to those things!!", which was REALLY unheard of back then, not just in movies but real life pretty much. The characters a bit of an asshole actually, but theyr all sort of dicks.

  • "First movie to depict gruesome acts of violence .. . with guts all over"

I take it THIS guy doesn't know about the earlier Herschel Gordon Lewis flicks like 'Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red and 'Gruesome Twosome ?

  • did u know that george romero was inspired to make these horror movies by a kids show.look it up

  • So the zombie horror genre is about testicles? Interesting...

  • @TheScorpionMK37 HEY, .. . how about a movie with zombies that eat testicles ?!!

  • @Skulldini Ouch! You know when I was in middle school me and my friends made a comic that if zombies raped you you'd turn into a raping zombie.

  • The choice

1.stay and barricade the walls and doors 2. go into a cellar with a zombie affected little girl

    3. go to the attic and never look out the window (you might get shot by rednecks).

  • A black actor playing a big roll in a horror films had been done before

    The Monster Walks 1932

    look it up

  • people dont take zombies serious anymore. i blame call of duty

  • I love ballz

  • Great ending lines. George Romero owns the zombie genre.

  • Zawmbiez eat BALLZ

  • The minute I heard the title to this I just wanted to see it and then I got dawn of the dead! EPIC!

  • An interesting fact is this movie started the mythology or folklore of the flesh eating zombie. Before zombies in Haitian folklore were simply dead slaves, in this movie zombies became a lot more dangerous and there is also the folklore of how to kill them. In many ways the folklore has escaped the movie completely.

  • That ending was amazing!

  • 0:17

they must be the funniest 7 words of all time.

  • 1968: AWSOME AS HELL

    1990: Not Bad

    2006: YOU KNOW WHAT'S BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLSHIT!!!

  • You misspelled 'Night of The Flesh Eaters'. :P

  • Holy fuck,I feel SO stupid,I've watched every review so far and all of them (films) look awesome, and are legendary, but I've never seem them, except for Nosferatu, but thats WAY too long, time to stop fucking around and watch those classics, hammer films, universal's monsters,EVERYTHING

Wish me luck, with all of these movies to watch,I'm gonna fucking need it....

  • this is when mlkj was killed in so he got his wish

  • This was one of the first films to star a black hero, but it may have inadvertently started the trend of killing minority characters in horror films

  • Night of the Living Dead (original 1968) - one of the best zombie movies ever made

The 1990 Tom Savini remake - the good remake

The 2006 remake - sucked ass

  • I wish Romero would go back to making movies like this. Nowadays its like he doest give a shit

  • i love the ending lol the military just rolls up and shoots the black dude for no reason.....its only cause they just couldn't stand seeing a black dude be the main guy and survive the whole time

  • In the end a bunch of rednecks shoot the protagonist, the black guy, in the head...and the rednecks didnt think that the black guy was a zombie, they just done kill him.

  • 1968:AWESOME AS SHIT!!!!! 1990:not bad actually pretty damn good!

2006:FUCKING BULLSHIT I WOULD RATHER CHEW OFF A ZOMBIES DICK WHILE A HOOKER ZOMBIE GIVES ME A BLOWJOB(which would be somewhat satisfying)

  • My mom rented this when I was nine years old and lived in an old farmhouse, lets just say it scared the shit outta me.

  • I wouldn't call Night tame... every time i watch it (once a day) lol, it always scares the crap outa me.

  • Both the original and the 1990 remake are awesome.

  • actually there was a movie called blood feast that came out a few years earlier that had lots of gore and blood, so this wasn't the first but certainly the most memorable

  • 2:50 "I thought 'brains' was what the genre was all about"

This film kinda bored me when it was rebroadcast... I guess it was Barbara (the woman who gets chased in the beginning). I've seen parts of the middle and have even seen the end. Overall a good movie.

  • Balls is what this genre is all about? haha without the context i would definitely call this a very sexist remark

  • this film is now avalible in colour though but better in black & white, tonight watched the colour edition o NOTLD somehow it looks tacky in colour so just turned the colour volume down to monocrone, has any one out there own the colour edition

  • @gallafey I can't picture watching this in color. The black and white photography adds to the eerie mood of the film.

  • and balls are the only thing that gives orders!!

  • I kinda like these movies because of the no explanations of why they're coming back to eat people.

I wish Star Wars prequels didn't happen.

  • Your right about the ending it does have balls

  • THERE COMING TO GET YOUR PING PONG BALLS BARBERA!

  • Romero does have balls. He also has a tendency to screw up films when he gets a big budget. Not hating on the man, he's a true genius of horror, but to me, the more money he has for a movie, the worst it actually is. It's like if the man is taking the money from a studio and secretly thinking "I'll piss all over this, your $&% studio!"

    But that's just me.

  • James should do a comedy movie countdown for April fools

  • @notveryfunnyatall I love that idea.

  • This was made on my birthday!

  • 1968 Version- Masterpiece

    1990 Version- Really good remake

    2006 Version- FAIL

  • @Teenlego It wasnt remaid in 2006. I think your thinking of dawn of the dead...

  • @stongej there was a NotlD remake in 2006, just look it up

  • @Teenlego It sucked serious ass too. How could they fuck up a classic so badly?

  • Before rating systems started my sister took me to see this film in 67 when I was 9. (No wonder I got screwed up?) lol

I kept thinking that little girl was coming out of my closet to kill me? (eeek)

  • Cinemassacre, and AVGN...WE WORSHIP YOU!!!

  • Love story in a zombie film? How about a woman falls in love with a zombie, then the zombie eats her. So romantic.

  • Comment removed

  • @spacecowboyzXD For a love story in a zombie film, you might want to check out 'Return of the Living Dead Part 3,' (it's better than it sounds actually, no masterpiece but interesting) or especially the Indy horror film 'Dead Girl', not exactly a love story but... >_< well, see it for yourself sometime.

  • @spacecowboyzXD That was actually the premise of an episode of an old 80's TV horror show called "Monsters".

  • No he didn't create the Zombie movie idea, he created the Zombie apocalypse movie idea, you also never hear zombie mentioned at all in this film. Zombie does not even mean living dead at all, so my question is, who the hell started labeling "the living dead" as zombies?

  • @leadfarmer4u The term "Zombie" does indeed mean the dead returning to life.

  • @leadfarmer4u They originally referred to the zombies as "ghouls", which according to folklore was more accurate. Zombies were slave labor, ghouls were hungry for your flesh.

  • im surpise that he did not no ther was a remake i think it was somewere in the 80s thats why ther was a return of the living dead then part 2

  • Well they would'nt stay alive in that 1 house because soon'er or later the zombies will mutat and start to become stronger and harder to kill it would probobly take 2 weeks after the first infection.BBBBBut if their immune they wont become infected! the biggest buffest zombie i might say its a TANK! it would rush through makeing the survivors panic an 1 touch of him and you'll go flying.

  • He always stayed away from the mainstream....the only cool hipster.

  • I got balls of steel.

  • george romero doesnt have balls he pisses me off making those zombies electrical making them run fast and never dieing he pisses me off!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @cooltravis5566

You mean in his films or in Call of the Dead?

  • @TheSecondR call of the dead :)

  • @cooltravis5566

Do u play on PS3 or Xbox, if its ps3 send me a f/r

  • this reminds me of nazi zombies

  • @alexzand98 what was the movie called?

  • @alexzand98 THAT was another flick titled 'Shock Waves. The first with nazi zombies, .. and also the first movie to feature underwater ( amphibious ) zombies, so then kinde of a groundbreaking one in it's own right .

  • They're cahming to get you, Bah-Barah...

  • I remember last Halloween, I was just going through the channels to see what they were showing, and this was on...After I finished watching this...I had nightmares. Just goes to show you...sometimes even old movies can scare the shit outta you...

  • They're coming to get you Barbara!

  • Ahhh 1968, great year. Night of the living dead, The Beatles white album...so many great things.

  • Fantastic! I want to see it now more then ever. My first zombie movie was Dawn of the Dead. When I learned that is was a sort of sequel to this, I have been looking for it.

  • This film's brilliant, a real milestone in cinema.

  • One of the first to have a black guy in the starring role? That's a HUGE generalization.

  • @SirCrooner Well there was also Sidney Poitier who had a starring role in several films prior to NOTLD like 'The Defiant Ones' which came out in 1958 and 'In The Heat Of The Night' in 1967, so I have to agree with you.

Not that I don't think Duane Jones isn't outstanding in his role in NOTLD.

  • @cha5 Not to mention The Mark of The Hawk, starring Eartha Kitt and Sidney Poitier in 1957, and all of the black movies of the 1930s and 1940s. James should have known better.

  • he's comming to get you, Critic.

  • balls too the wall!!

  • George Romero should be in the next COD Game and help fight the zombies LOL

  • the black guy starring wasn't an intentional barrier breaker, George Romero talked in an interview about how they were all film students who rented a farm house for a month or so and his friend who happened to be black was the best actor of the bunch, they didn't realize until later in production it was a ground breaking idea, so they added the subliminal lynching scene at the end to question social ideas and make the audience think

  • god i love zombie movies the best type of horror

  • @tobluetoblack zombie movies are to violent to much blood i can't stand blood in movies.

  • @tobluetoblack zombie movies are to violent to much blood i can't stand blood in movies. i never watched it sorry

  • @tobluetoblack zombie movies are to violent to much blood i can't stand blood in movies. i never watched it sorry i hate nudity to in movies women being nude and men too.

  • Herschell Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast is far bloodier and was released five years earlier. Also, Sidney Poitier had already been cast as a male lead in multiple films, so while a black male lead was rare in 1968, it was certainly not "unheard of". NOTLD is brilliant for many reasons, but it is not a first in either of these senses.

  • hahaha, geogra A. romero making 1968 horror movies to killing 4 zombie survivors in call of duty black ops

  • 1:49 That that radio report plays in the White Zombie album La Sexorcisto.

  • "When Hell has no more room, the dead shall walk the Earth"

  • @fyocouchnickel That's from dawn of the dead. The original line was " My grandather used to be a pries in Trinidad, he said When there is no more room in hell ,the dead will walk the earth. That is the tagline and you organized the words wrong.

  • Well said, Mr.Rolfe

  • another thing about the film is, when they were done they were transporting the negative, it was announced on the radio that MLK had been assasinated. so here they are with a film that *spoiler* has a strong black character shot. This would stall the release if im correct

  • i watch this film right before i went to a hockey game i was tramatized

  • man when i was a kid i was convinced that this was the scariest film ever made

  • Oh God. That child stabbing her own mother shocked the hell out of me. I couldn't take it. I still barely stand to be reminded of it. Being reminded of it just brings back my distaste. I couldn't handle it. I still can't. I'm sure Romero is a good director, but.. Oh God. I feel a little sick for some reason.

  • the fact that htere inside full of barracades makes me think nzi zombies was inspired by this

  • Barbara did nothing for this entire movie.. she hardly had dialogue to work with, her only big moment was in the beginning...

  • @sikokiller12

Barbara was very valuable. She was the cute, vulnerable character that we all wanted to help. We wanted her to be safe, because clearly her mind was going and she was in no shape to take care of herself. That's what added tension to just about every single scene inside the house... and tragedy, when she was finally dragged to her death by her own brother.

Sometimes, what you do not see is just as important as what you do see. ;)

  • There was a romantic subplot but that only took up about 1 minute of dialoge between a couple, i'mglad romero sticked to his vision and said fuck you to the studio.

  • The ending doesn't suck. Just because you didn't get the typical "happily ever after" ending doesn't mean it's bad. Grow some BALLS.

  • 0:12 what movie is that?

  • @naruto181800 nosferatu which is the first dracula film made in 1902

  • @sephiroth8261 1922

  • @naruto181800 creature from the black lagoon

  • @naruto181800 Creature from the Black Lagoon.

  • LMAO, "The black and white shitty look." 1:20

  • White Zombie was the 1st zombie movie, but Night of the Living Dead perfected it.

  • FUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

    Stop stabbing me!

  • Very sad ending, return of the living dead also had a sad ending but its a comedy movie sorta so nobody cares. Dawn of the Dead has the nicest ending I've seen to this plot.

  • i wont give away the ending but what i wil lsay is that it has balls, true

  • This movie was in Schlocky Horror Picture Show on TVS (Television Sydney) the other night. I tried to watch it but my girlfriend couldn't stop complaining how boring it was so I missed it. When it comes back on I'll record it.

  • Ben is probably one of my favorite horror movie heroes

  • the ending of the movie kind of sucked. in the end almost everyone is killed by the dead except for the black guy. but then HE dies by getting shot by the police who were shooting the living dead.

  • I like the way James said 'balls'

  • the black guy is the last guy to die :3

  • @karlos515 The exact opposite of today's movies lol

  • Booker T:

"Barbara, we coming to get you nigguh!"

  • night of the living dead masterful

  • i dont want to cause a fuss

WE'RE COMING TO GET YOU BARBARA

  • wacthing it tonight

  • Getting Origanal And Remake For Christmas

  • @AirsoftBang (Orig)anal...

  • "The're coming to get you Barbara...." {Tilts head}

  • @AirsoftBang i have an autographed version of the remake by tom and romero

  • @AirsoftBang what ever you do STAY FAR AWAY FROM the 06 version ! it was so godawful it was and shall always be a representation of what happens when you take a sucessful movie and remake again and again untill it becomes nothing more then a worthless pop culture creature ! maybe like the thing !

  • 0:17 is kinda creepy

  • What is it about this guy and balls?

  • @schiavone402 he likes balls (team america reference)

  • Speaking of Left 4 Dead, if they ever made a movie and want it to be well done, they should get George Romero as director, Tom Savini and Rick Baker as make up designers, and Qunetin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez as writers!

  • @a45027 and probably Stephen King and Romero involed with writing the script.

  • Comment removed

  • @clashrogers Well, King was the writer of Maximum Drive, so maybe, yeah. I don't know why, but whenever i think of the doc from Left 4 Dead 2, I always think of Kurt Russell with short hair, lol!

  • I'm not a big fan of the shlocky zombie pictures that came after this,

but Night Of The Living Dead is my 2nd fave horror flick of all time. Not just because of it's lack of shlock, but also because, it really aims at trying to be scary.

  • Romero's got some balls...loved this film.

  • You don't suppose that the main protagonist, Ben, in this movie was the inspiration for Louis from the Left 4 Dead video games? :)

  • @Bauglir100 ITS FUNNY BECUASE L4D WAS MADE AFTER THIS MOVIE!

    seriously!

    get a fuckin brain.

  • Balls!!

  • balls

  • I like this movie but its not my favorite classic zombie flick. My favorite is Return of the Living Dead 2...... Tarman rules!

  • @AshXXMayftw the "return" films are a genre all their own. they rule and are hilarious.

  • @nightmarefacility Yep but I hate the original Dawn of the Dead mainly because how fake they look especially there pail faces

  • That's movie is great but it has one of the most anti-climatic endings I've ever seen. It's up there with Cast a Giant Shadow, Contact, & the Augment 3-parter on Star Trek: Enterprise.

  • i just watched this movie XD

  • Wouldn't balls be what the Porno spoof genre is all about? :P

  • As it stands, this is my favorite pre-color movie

Mostly because I haven't gotten the chance to watch any others, but I think this is a top-notch movie

  • Romero has balls....I like balls,

  • There were all kinds of zombie films after this film came out, but NOTLD is king of the hill! There was a color remake in 1990 with Tony Todd in the Duane Jones role and it's directed by Tom Savini. It was pretty good, but the original is all the more creepy.

  • Yesterday i saw the Sheriff from this movie, the first zombie from the cemetary and the reporter from when they got the TV on.

  • hey that is Louis from L4D :P

  • Please stop pronouncing it "jon-ruh." Thank you.

  • @pregnantwithtv CRY SOME MOAR!

  • It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon..........

  • @BAB13100 WTF!?

  • @SuperRichalvarezFan Oops! Sorry! Ahem...

    ....for 12 seconds. :D

  • @pregnantwithtv That's how it's pronounced, you fucking idiot!

  • @Bauglir100 No it's not, you fucking idiot.

  • @pregnantwithtv How then? How?!

  • @Bauglir100 The G not a J sound and it's not an SH sound, either. It's a cross between the two. Also, the vowels are more nuanced and it doesn't rhyme with "duh." Don't pronounce it like that ignorant American the Angry Nintendo Faggot.

  • @pregnantwithtv proper pronunciation. And sorry if pronunciation pisses you off, Vladimir!
