Doesn't everyone see that the fear of not knowing is enough to create something as old and big as religion? why go into to it further and if religion gets you out of bed in the morning let the nutters get on with it.
I just love your view on religion, I find it very interesting to think about. But I found that it didn't quite apply to non-dogmatic and non-monotheistic religions. Could you please give us your analysis of other religions out of mainstream ones. It would be even more interesting for me, since I am wiccan. Religion is indeed a disease of the mind!! It has so many people as hostages that it will take at times the "killing of the host" to do away with it!!
Traumatic experience with indoctrination can push a genetically predisposed person past the breaking point of psychosis, but in and of itself it is not a mental illness. I have personal experience with childhood indoctrination and have been diagnosed as bipolar. The extreme fundamentalist Christianity was more of a catalyst leading me to psychosis. One can discard one's faith, but you can never be cured of a mental illness.
@reconcilingfire dude, atheism is not a religion. The definition: the doctrine or belief that there is no God. Religion is the belief in a god. It's that simple. Also, most atheists believe in consistent evidence found by many scientists over the past couple hundred years while the religious rely on a book written by human beings, most of which didn't even witness any of the stories (or in my opinion, parables) for their facts. There is a clear distinction between the two.
it seems like religion is blocking something in the brain. It's a way of denial. nobody wants to accept that we only have 80 years or so to exist. I'm atheist and i wish i could believe that i would live forever and some force is looking out for me and i'll never be alone, but my mind won't allow me to think that since it obviously defies logic. I think once religion dies out, the world will be so much more logical and we'll progress into such a better world as we focus on the issues that matter

Atheism is a "religion" too. Every single person has a fundamental worldview of why the universe exists. We are all in the same boat. We all have a view of the world. Since no view can be absolutely proven without traveling back in time to the beginning of the universe, we all have an element of faith. Even when that faith is evidence-based. If religion is a mind disease, all of humanity is sick with it.
Religion will be phased out in the West if we are not overrun by the rest of the world. In China and Japan and most of Asia everyone is Atheistic. The only big religions today are Judaism (worst in my opinion), Christianity and Islam. This is a big departure from when every society and country had their own. Most people don't need to seek answers for what they don't know anymore in order to provide a false sense of comfort. We understand reality enough to be secure in our own existence.

This is a question that many people are trying to answer, however the restricting religious beliefs of the world are delaying the progress of these investigations by jumping to conclusions that don't make logical sense.

I wonder if the insanity of society is a result of genetic memory. A genetic memory caused by religion. Think about it, a group of people with a belief. @Roelandvinken Evolution is primarily random. It equipped us with brains capable of selfish thinking which both allows us as a species to survive, and to not survive, but seeing as our developed minds' positive effects far outweigh the negative aspects (atom bombs etc), the mutated pre-humans with those minds survived better. And remember, we are all born atheists.
The first humans, had religious cave drawings, so spirituality is a basic human trait im not alone on this one.

I have personal experience with childhood indoctrination and have been diagnosed as bipolar. The extreme fundamentalist Christianity was more of a catalyst leading me to psychosis. Also, most atheists believe in consistent evidence found by many scientists over the past couple hundred years while the religious rely on a book written by human beings, most of which didn't even witness any of the stories (or in my opinion, parables) for their facts. There is a clear distinction between the two.

it seems like religion is blocking something in the brain. It's a way of denial. nobody wants to accept that we only have 80 years or so to exist. I'm atheist and i wish i could believe that i would live forever and some force is looking out for me and i'll never be alone, but my mind won't allow me to think that since it obviously defies logic. I think once religion dies out, the world will be so much more logical and we'll progress into such a better world as we focus on the issues that matter

Religion will be phased out in the West if we are not overrun by the rest of the world. In China and Japan and most of Asia everyone is Atheistic. The only big religions today are Judaism (worst in my opinion), Christianity and Islam. This is a big departure from when every society and country had their own. Most people are dumb fucks who act like a herd of sheep. They need something to bond with other dumb fucks. How in large doses, can relegion get dangerous in large doeses? I can underestand if the religion practices something like sacrifices or something extreme, but if someone does that, it is probably because they have a real mental disorder or mind fucked by an accult leader, not because they are religious. I do not practice any rituals. So am i no more religious in a book club or a table of poker players?

For in those systems that the conscious mind will thrive and may make it easier for others to have a happy life before tehy die. My belief my friend is that this reality will end at some point in the future and no other consciousness will be aware it ever existed.

It equipped us with brains capable of selfish thinking which both allows us as a species to survive, and to not survive, but seeing as our developed minds' positive effects far outweigh the negative aspects (atom bombs etc), the mutated pre-humans with those minds survived better.
