I agree with you, Bluehawk. And if you have a look at what I actually said you will clearly see that I said "PEOPLE can now look back at that time with a few romantic notions". I did not say that the FILM romanticized the war or the Battle of the Atlantic ; the film was gritty and grim and quite harrowing to watch.
I suppose people can now look back at that time with a few romantic notions about life in a Uboat in the North Atlantic but the reality must have been dreadful with the threat of sudden death from a determined destroyer/aircraft attack always lurking. Hindsight and armchairs are always comforting.
My father was in the USN's Silent Service in the Pacific during the war... he and I went to see it together in 1983. He came out of the theater quite shaken. He said it was the best submarine film he'd ever seen. It shook him up because it reminded him of a 14 hour depth charge run the Japanese gave his boat in '45. He had nightmares for weeks afterward about it. Even on his deathbed, he remembered it.

I knew a negro who supposedly was a U boat commander during the WW2. I can't believe him. Where there any niggers in the U boat service of the German Navy during WW2?

The film doesn't romanticize it at all.
