The sad fact is that anyone who would have an objection with male-to-male intimacy would be put off by what "little" amount is in this film anyway, so Mr Araki might as well have "evened" it out more!
I think Mr Araki wants to be more "mainstream" so he has shifted his focus from male-to-male intimacy to male-to-female intimacy and female-to-female intimacy.

@JJTheTrue I wonder of Arkaki's shift in theme (from exclusively gay to bi) is autobiographical. He self-identified as gay until 1997, when he started dating one of his actresses, Kathleen Robertson. He's one of the leading figures in New Queer Cinema, and has been quite successful at it--so I don't think he's too concerned about what "mainstream" people think of his work. There's a lot in Kaboom that would be off-putting to mainstream audiences. We need to be careful about bisexual erasure.

I agree in part, but only in that a bi can "pass" more easily than gays. However, there is the problem of bisexual erasure. Lots of times when someone comes out as bi, they get shit from both sides. They get the same hatred & discrimination from homophobes that the rest of us do, and at the same time they don't get respect or support from the gay community.

@alwaysuseless His "unclean/out of control" hair it's totally deliberate because his character is described by the script as a narcissistic dumb surfer with gorgeous looks that who tortures his roomie with his good looks. I've seen a lot of surfers with that kind of look and most of them turn me ON. On the other hand, I'm not so strict in types myself but I prefer blond guys (even bleached ones). And I don't dislike cute guys with femenine features. Lots of butch butt ugly faces out there too.
