  • I have never heard such delightful harmonies as those produced by the Rankin Family......such loveliness reaches straight to my soul.

  • @mousie6067 I first heard them in a videotape made to accompany the Putumayo cd Celtic Tides. When I heard them recording the vocal for An Innis Aigh with only the harp for accompaniment....it brought tears to my eyes.that melody and those beautiful, beautiful harmonies...as you say,it touches the soul.

  • Lovely song! I am here because of Underbelly razor. :P <3

  • Thanks so much for posting this, must be the most haunting song in the world...

  • Every time I listen to this I have the urge to learn Gaelic, despite the fact that I'd rarely ever get to use it.

  • I am from Louisiana, the final stopping place for the Acadians who were expelled from Nova Scotia in the 1700's. Half of my ancestors are from Nova Scotia and half are from the British Isles. I have always had feeling of being drawn to the haunting sounds of the Rankin family ballads. This is the first song I sang to my children in the hospital when they were born. Such belonging, yearning. Beautiful.

  • wow!

  • The continue of the song i think :The ghost goes out in rags eyes aglow like embers

When the cold wind blows, embers arre sparkling and ablaze

Burning head I ride on the blackened timber

Sink the fearful night for this day is over it begins BY me :cutepuppyzwinnky

  • I'm in awe. Amazingly beautiful

  • I just heard this for the first time a few days ago, (from the movie Margaret's Museum) and I finally tracked it through IMBD. Words cannot express the feelings I have listening to this. I have become an instant fan of the Rankins. The only other comparable experience was years ago, when I first heard Theme from Harry's Game by Clannad.

It really makes me want to explore my Scottish heritage.

  • Or, perhaps, it being Gaelic, it would be "cianalas"? I've never figured out whether cianalas and hiraeth have the same meaning.

  • Hear the Hiraeth in their Voices.....

  • margrets museum <3 x

  • Actually means "I will see the great mountains", and was sung at JFK's funeral as the lament.

  • This song always brings a tear to my eye. I've only been to Scotland once, but it is the home of my heart and soul. Of the various parts of my family background (being a true American mutt! LoL), the Scottish is what resonates.

  • @19RC64 Add: Nothing like hearing it from the Rankins!

  • Mo dhachaidh ,Bill Nix
