I don't know - I think football/ soccer or any other kind of sport can be viewed as a way to vent out frustrations by being on the stadium, chanting the team forward, cursing at the referee - and then , at the end of the match one is supposed to be tired and relieved of stress and to go have a beer with friends or go home.

To me it is a kind of ritual so that you don't have to be violent in everyday life.

Yet when some fans fight on the streets before and after matches,then what's the point
