@ilestaucourant have you seen the Fantastic Planet (goes by The Wild Planet and other names too) made by France and Tcheque? it's one of the best animation / movies of all times! you can find it on YouTube too. just search for the name of the movie here on YT or IMDB etc and you'll hit it.)

Zeman is also known by his triplet of fairy tales animated by a famous czech artist Jiří Trnka - Pohádky Tisíce a Jedné Noci (Tales of 1,001 Nights - 1974), Čarodějův učeň (Krabat — The Sorcerer's Apprentice - 1977) and...
@ilestaucourant Hi, this movie (Baron Munchausen) is one of the serie of fabulous movies by a czechoslovakian director and artist Karel Zeman (3. november 1910 - 5. april 1989). Most of his films are inspired by the legendary Jules Verne and he is influenced by Gustav Dore as well, especially masterpieces like Cesta do pravěku (Journey to Prehistory - 1955, animation by Z. Burian), Vynález zkázy (A Deadly Invention, or An Invention for Destruction - 1958) based on Jules Verne "Face au drapeau"..
I watched this on Boston TV, thinking It was about the 30s US radio character named Baron Munchhausen, and was puzzled. "What's this Euro kiddie film got to do with the actor who played Munchhausen-Jack Pearl?".
Pure movie magic! The color scheme, the music... Everything is just so beautiful! For years now, I've been dying to add this gem to my Munchausen collection. Why, oh why aren't any of Karel Zeman's movies commercially available in North America?!? As children would say: no fair! :(
@DavidPhibes Go to allcluesnosolutions (dot) com. They have Baron Prasil, The Fabulous World of Jules Verne, Journey to the Beginning of Time, and The Stolen Airship. Each one costs only $7.00!
@Maldoror2112 Thanks for the tip! For $7, it's worth it! The unfortunate thing about DVD+Rs / "burned" DVDs, though, is that they tend to have a considerably shorter lifespan than pressed DVDs. At least, that's what I hear. :( Eventually, I guess I'll have to cough up the money for a zone-free DVD player and try to order Karel Zeman's movies from overseas.
P.S. Nice username! :) Why didn't I think of that?
@DavidPhibes hey, i was once able to order another zeman movie ("the fabulous world of jules verne") from turner classical movies, although it was dubbed. this movie (baron munchausen) has haunted me for years. it is the most amazing thing! i am so glad i finally found it a while ago.
@cheddarpuff Really? I guess I'll be ordering TCM's catalog then! Do you know if "The Fabulous World of Jules Verne" is still available from them? Although I usually prefer to watch foreign movies with subtitles, some English dubs are surprisingly decent. For example, I have the English dub of Jiri Trnka's "The Emperor's Nightingale" on DVD (narrated by Boris Karloff), and it's awesome! Then again, you can't go wrong with Karloff! ;)
@DavidPhibes you can order from TCM online, but i don't know if they still have the jules vernes movie. On amazon germany you can find this collection of zeman stuff with english and spanish subtitles, i just don't know if the dvd would play in the us: (i guess i cannot add a url here...) This collection includes baron prasil and a few shorter movies. what I really want to see is zeman's "the stolen airship"
@DavidPhibes hey, just so you know, that "collection" does not contain all of his movies, but still definitely a cool piece. i have given you the link on your youtube profile page (or whatever you call that thing). :)
I love this movie since first time I've seen it, when i was a child, on italian television. Thanks a lot for this posting! I remember also the masterpiece Vynalez Skazy (it.: La diabolica invenzione). And have a little hope to see it again ;-)
I want to say thanks for putting this up too. First saw it roughly 20 years ago, only seen snippets since. Zemans work hard enough to come by so - Cheers!
Baron Prášil is czech name of german origin Baron Münchhausen; why it is I dont know too, but in my opinion german name is dificult for pronunciation so we have our own version ;)
Münchhausen was in Latvia a long time and we/they call him Minhauzens and even have a museum about him. I think as a native speaker of German Münchhausen isn't difficault to utter^^. However, as I want to be fluent in Czech one day, I have problems to with uttering ř, as well.

Zemanovy filmy jsou originalita a hlavně nikde na světě nedokázal herce spojit s animací, jako právě Zeman.

I agree. That score is absolutely beautiful. I've read that Liska's widow won't allow it to be released for some reason. It's a shame.
