as far as the comments go alot of us old schoolers liked this kind of music back in the nineties we grew up on it vanilla ice did pave the road of hip hop for white rappers as did the beastie boys as far as the video goes the song was dope and ya alot of you youngsters were concieved to this song
This is hilarious and no he didn't make a path for Eminem, the Beastie Boys did....he is about as influential to rap as Los Del Rio are to Spanish music
Who the hell is RIFF? and Why is everyone dancing so fast if this is a “slow jam”? Why is that woman dancing on top of a phone booth? this video just blew my mind!!!
Really... anyone who claims Vanilla Ice was influential to the hip hop genre knows absolutely nothing about hip hop. Vanilla Ice was a corporate construct of vapid pop music. If anything, this guy made it harder for someone like Eminem to succeed.
@yodadoe what the hell are you talking about WATCH THE VIDEOS HIS RECORD COMPANY STATED THEY DESTROYED HIS CAREER BY LYING ON HIM AND SAYING HE WAS HARDCORE AND HE NEVER SAID SUCH A THING.
@marques10010 The record company lied that he attended school with Luther Campbell, spent most of his times in the ghettos of Miami and had a Honda Motocross sponsorship. The report that he was stabbed five times was true though, Ice still has scars and spent 10 days in the hospital back in 1987.
In real life, Ice spent most of his youth in South Dallas, sold ecstasy trying to fund his records, played in black clubs, opened for N.W.A. and won the grand nationals in motocross in Dallas.
This song honestly seems like a parody of the music industry. If he was joking, then fine. Lyrics like "When I first saw you, it was love at first sight" are retarded.
@MrTsquared88 somehow i think youre not here just to comment on this video.. youre a perfect example of how to be a douche bag. making a video anytime soon? :)
@jinxlovesdanno actually i came here cuz i read a thing that michael bay directed this music video, and i wanted to see it. and it turns out, its just a video of vanilla ice being a douche bag. and a song...about vanilla ice being a douche bag. which is embarrassing on michael bays part to say the least... granted the camera angles and scenery and stuff arent too bad, but still, the song sucks and vanilla ice is just a douche bag.
Actually I like this song..Vanilla Ice was very influential and important to hip hop. Regardless of the negative points about him..he made a path for Eminem to be where he is today. Let's be honest. The first guy is always the fall guy.
@MrRainbowquest00 Thats very true. Back in 1990 when Vanilla Ice hit the scene there wasn't the type of marketing schemes, focus groups, demographic research, and social media that exists today. Vanilla Ice was indeed the fall guy. Eminem's handlers looked at what went wrong with Vanilla Ice's career and made sure to avoid those pitfalls as well as take advantage of the newer marketing strategies that we have now. Vanilla Ice's failure helped Em's career immensely.
@MrRainbowquest00 No, not even the least bit. Vanilla Ice was neither influential, nor the first, and has absolutely nothing to do with Eminem's success. A song like this, which is basically LL Cool J's "I Need Love" with terrible lyrics, has very little to none artistic merit, where Eminem actually has skills as a rapper. Saying Vanilla Ice paved the way for Eminem, just because both happen to be white, is also pretty racist. Besides, the Beastie Boys started the whole 'white rapper' thing.
Lemme just say that this song is better than the stupid shit now on the radio talking about a woman's ass and tits. This is a LOVE song, not a hyper-sexual song.
Yeah but it's the type doesn't quite work in the rap world. LL learned that the hard way with "I need love" which got him booed off stage a few times.
WHAT DOES NOT PROVIDE SOME WHAT is WHAT DOES THE HEART OF PLAYS AND PEOPLE THAT MAKE THIS MUSIC VERY MARKED TODAY AND TO MAKE A LOT HERE IN BRAZIL love this song impressed me
I agree. this song goes hard! its as good as any rap love song of the time..think ll cool j. yes he is a poser and yes he is white...but he was good at what he did--bottom line.
This song makes me yearn to make love with my lover atop a phone booth at a gas station off of the interstate. I would cry as I entered my lover again and again, and the drivers would watch us hungrily as they passed by. I would then shed a tear for each of the drivers as my lover and I simultaneously climaxed in the throws of ecstasy. It makes me well up just thinking about it.
@alexarmstrong3 this song does sound good, but @BigPoppaChump i like justin bieber he is just another kid living his dream but VANILLA ICE does seem like he was playin around wen he made alot of his music and videos
"It's a tender hip hop ballad that shamelessly apes LL Cool J's "I Need Love" but does it in such a pussified way it manages to make "I Need Love" sound like "Fuck Da Police" in comparison."
True but. Let's face it, Mr. Ice was a Flavor of the Month act (Vanilla, Naturally). People got got bored of him quickly and his popularity went South and his career with it. His Turkey of a movie was pulled from cinemas after about three weeks!
If someone asked me who was worse; Justin Beaver or Ice, I will still say Beaver because at least with Ice, back then it wasn't as corny as we think it is now. when he was out, people like him but when you think of it now, you can't help but laugh
SAY WHAT U WANT 89-91 EVERYBODY LIKED VI EVN MY OLDER BROTHER SO MANY PEOPLE LIKED HIM AND NOT JUST GIRLS WHEN I GREW UP ALL THE OLDER BLACK KIDS LIKED HIM TO SO STOP FRONTING ALL OF YOU LIKED V.ICE
This song is a VERY underrated, original song that would've received greater recognition and charted better had it been released first before the mediocre Play That Funky Music that wreaked of excessive sampling (following on from Ice Ice Baby). Pushing an original composition first may have just prolonged Vanillas career (in his original persona) just that little bit longer.
@JarrodCook93 Eminem is a nerdy voiced sounding faggot. I don't understand how that queer got so popular and Vanilla ice's career went into the shitter. He's awesome.
"You know how everyone's always saying this guy sucks and putting him down and stuff but... erm.. hehe ehhee... you know he really does suck so.. this is one of those times when everyone's right" - Beavis
ColtinNotChicken: Comparing Vanilla Ice to today's music, then saying he isn't THAT bad, is like saying the STDs of the 70s weren't THAT bad compared to AIDS. Given a choice, it's still possible to choose neither. But hey, we're all entitled to our opinions here in the Good Ol' U.S. of A.
r this I went an watched the movie, "Cool As Ice" whereupon my friends and I were granted the privelege of being one of the first to hear the famous line, "Words of wisdom. Drop that zero and get with the hero". There were a lot of girls who thought Vanilla Ice was hot too. He really was popular. Now I look back and chuckle because even HE hated the hair and costumes his promotion people made him wear (quoted in recent interviews) lol
It's like a fifth grader wrote his rhymes. Or, shit, I could write better rhymes than that in the fifth grade. What a fucking tool, an enormous festering boil on the ass-end of commercial rap music.
If a black guy joined the Klu Klux Klan voluntarily and was the president of the Adolf Hitler fan club even he would have more credibility and admiration from the African American community than the black guys in this video.
Totally a rip off of LL COOL Js "I Need Love". Vanilla Ice was shameless. That is why he failed and crashed so hard. He thought no one would notice that this was a ripoff just like he thought no one would notice he ripped off the Queen song. Completely clueless. That is why he fell.
@mozfan2436 Wrong. He never thought he would be a worldwide Succes. The label that doesn't pay royalties for each sale of record it makes, and u blame only the VI? If he wasn't that mainstream, Queen and Bowie would never knew about him. At that time till today a lot of ppl is taking samples from others. The problem is that in the past in the rap comunity was kind of normal to do this without causing too much problem to the original writters.
LL Cool J Total rip off without the same sample???
@pitlee Ripoffs aren't just about taking a sample from the original song. You gotta get outta that mindframe. What I am suggesting is that he and his record producer sat down and said "Let's make a Vanilla Ice verison of "I Need Love"." It's a total bite of the LL Cool J song with the same vibe, tempo, feel and theme. A "hardened" rapper that goes soft for a moment to talk about love. Only, with LL's song it seemed genuine and believable,
@pitlee .... whereas the Vanilla Ice song comes off as a corny and cheesy wannabe of the LL Cool J version. This is a blatant ripoff of the original, If you don't see that, I would suggest you go back and listen to LL's song a couple times, and then come back and listen to this one. If you still don't see how it's a total wannabe copycat then there is no hope for you. Sorry.
@nameor im not defending vanilla ice, but he was clearly under the thumb of record execs. i'm pretty sure he was aware that he was a puppet to the industry and a joke to his peers. i doubt he took any of his"rap" career serious lol
Taking a break from censoring the shit out all the videos they sponsor, Vevo is generously offering free shotguns for anyone who wants to blow their fucking brains out after watching this. I just ordered mine...I'll be dead in 4-6 business days. Peace YouTube!
you may be nice, but i aint, im a muthafuckin fright when im coming at your wife with a knife, slittin throats, puttin dead bodies on boats, this little punk van Nilla ice, deserves to be put underground, where he's being for the past mutaFukin 15 years,
spittin hittin, this little bitch, whilst he's skull cracked, he shouldnt be back, saying he's playin techno, his rhymes havent earnt dimes, remains poor, should put a chainsaw to this cunt's head
This song would of been tight if the lyrics or better yet 100% of the song was NOT bitten. But then again, Vanilla Ice may have been the victim of negligance of the record companies cause they may have took a copyrighted song and told Vanilla Ice that it will be a good idea to rap the whole thing out.

Sorry.

A complete rip off of LL Cool J's "I Need Love". And Vanilla Ice was NOT the king of his time, he was an absolute joke in 1990.

Gangsters don't say "i love you" to a woman.
Not saying that I don't say love to my woman, but as a rap artist aren't you supposed to be speaking for the people..? Lol

The Guys in the Video are the ones in the Bathroom Scene in "Lean On Me". Riff, they also sang the theme for "White Men Can't Jump"!

3:46 I can't believe no one notice that LOL. I wonder if he is even taking it serious.
nameor 1 year ago
@nameor im not defending vanilla ice, but he was clearly under the thumb of record execs. i'm pretty sure he was aware that he was a puppet to the industry and a joke to his peers. i doubt he took any of his"rap" career serious lol

Taking a break from censoring the shit out all the videos they sponsor, Vevo is generously offering free shotguns for anyone who wants to blow their fucking brains out after watching this. I just ordered mine...I'll be dead in 4-6 business days. Peace YouTube!

i may be mistaken but that guy who's singing backup looks and sounds a lot like the guy who sings the chorus in tupac's "i ain't mad at cha"

"I love you...cause I love you" ? haha wow.
akloveamber 1 year ago 2
This song would of been tight if the lyrics or better yet 100% of the song was NOT bitten. But then again, Vanilla Ice may have been the victim of negligance of the record companies cause they may have took a copyrighted song and told Vanilla Ice that it will be a good idea to rap the whole thing out.
