  • She's beautiful!

  • The rider is Much too thin for a flat time trial like this. Being lightweight is only helpful if one is climbing. They could have done far better if they would have chosen a professional time trial rider. I think Fabian Cancellara was racing then. They should have gotten him to do it.

  • thats a fail...

  • im pretty sure i can go faster then that on a normal bike

  • @codydorman420 he got up to 52.4 miles an hour...

  • A small hole right in the front tip and another in the back would vent and not add drag.

  • oye y q onda si pasa un tope

  • yea you kinda need to go back to the drawing board. tape to hold it together and no venting? come on now.

  • All that money on composite materials....and a FOGGED up windshield shuts em down....good thinking ;-)

  • He could get the bike going alot faster with a shield over the whole bike.. Why we he not know this?? Perhaps it's not possible??

  • The modern hamster wheel for humans.

  • 1 fast bathtub

  • how exactly does this bike steer?

  • that was my invention you sunofabitch

  • Anyone else see him fall and say oh shit, there he goes!

  • 6:14 " 400

    O_O

  • Claustrophoic...

  • i go faster on my bmx

  • @YORKPEPPER No. No you can't go faster than these. BUT by the time anyone had got hatched in and out of something like this you wouldn't be far behind, that's if you hadn't overtaken their upturned hpv in the gutter. There's a reason these aren't popular!

  • he fogged up XD

  • Are there regulations regarding temperature for this hour record? It's only 20 degrees Celcius out - warmer temperatures would mean less air resistance and probably faster times. Then again, warmer temperatures would also make the rider sweat more and need more water, so I suppose it's a tradeoff.

  • A bike for lazy's

  • it should be call H.W.S for HIGHWAY SPERM...LOL SORRY I WAS HIGH

  • You would be in big trouble when a veyron came full speed out of that corner

  • Would go well on the bike trail, right under the families in the middle.

  • @cessna151 - lucidly put.

  • Istn dangerus ? because i suppose you cant see it if your are drivin with a truck or semthing high, tall

  • man: "laaaalalalaa yep i must seal it right up with this tape"

me : " that cool i understand you but where are the air holes , and why has he fell asleep "

    man" oh shit open it

  • it going to be hot ass hell in there..lol

  • i have an idea. instead of having a Rollerblader stabilize the CERAM, just do what airplanes do and have 2 wheels on the side of it that fold down and go back up with just the pull of 2 levers.

  • wow duct tape! how smart, you can see all the fog on the windshield thats why he crashed and whay make a pod theres no need for aerodynamics when you go that slow......people make me laugh

  • @doughboydusty Hi doughboydusty, when you say "that slow" what speed were you referring to? What speed do aerodynamics start to have an effect, and what method are you using to determine the effects?

  • @doughboydusty haha wow. fail. if you have ever rode a bike, you would know what effect the wind has on you.

  • he probably farted and passed out

  • The crash. Like a turtle on its back. I've fallen and I can't get up!

  • lol coffin to go

  • Taped in?! LET ME OUT! LET ME OUT! ITS NOT FUNNY!

Sorry, having flashbacks to a certain toy box I use to hide in, and a certain big sister who sat on the cover for 10 minutes one day....

  • @MrHobiecat Tell her to tie a rope around the box next time, then she can go watch you tube with you starving in a box, JK.

  • italiano français und vieleicht schwiezer-deutsch ! pas mal

  • ya'll should design one to go on water since it looks like a boat kinda

  • haha if he farts in that he's fucked xD

  • @AfterThePickUp O I get it I posted the comment before they put the roof on...

  • Drive it into the grass next time jack ass....

  • breaking records laying down

  • excellent design, but it will be the center of gravity is not alitle higth, maybe will add interesting sidebarssecurity on the out side, more flaps ailerons for stability comntrol but still it was good

  • bunnyhop!!!

  • imagine what would happen if you got a lose shoelace on that thing going that fast

  • i wonder if this is legal on the streets of LA

  • All that work and beaten by something so simple...isn't that always the way :)

  • lol tape

  • Then what happened? Did I miss it?

  • Like when you were a kid and put a bug in a jar!

  • A bath tub with pedals! But why?

  • the people will make you chet

  • should have used fairing up to steering and over rear area,

  • nice woman :D

  • what happens if he was about to pass out from no air flow through there while riding....

  • i think taping the cover on is a little primitive. if they have money to develop such a bike, why not some fancy carbon fibre clamping system

  • How fast were you going here?

  • @hrvatwrestle I agree, looks like you need better gearing.

  • and the winner is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it looks like the thing i exploded an egg in my microwave the other day !!

  • marybourgh, victoria australia they have way better cars then this thing and go a hell of alot better and longer my old school peddaled 384kms in 14 hours

  • I never get a puncture for years and this guy gets one on run like that. What a bad luck.

  • It's actually a very good cadence (pedaling speed). Folks like Lance Armstrong have proven that a high cadence like this maximizes the rider's energy transfer into forward motion.

  • that looks like fun but it looks hard

  • How fast was he going here w/o the fairing?

  • Perhaps you could take a small oxygen tank next time you go out in this vehicle I wouldn't think it would be to heavy.

  • Pas mal, très pratique surtout pour entrer et sortir du "véhicule" :-)

Au fait, coté entrée et évacuation de l'air et de la vapeur d'eau, on fait comment?

  • Looks like fun --Nice--- >>

Maybe streamline the airflow over riders spinning feet - shoes -->>>

How about putting the sealing tape on

in One piece each side so rider exit

    is much quicker -Safer-

  • Is that a FWD

  • Yes, this is a Front Wheel Drive bicycle.

  • @jcgosselin Interesting bike. Does the front wheel steer slightly? I wonder how the drive mechanism allows that.

  • @haygoodb The chain goes around a pulley and then along the fork where it gets twisted when the front wheet turns. Front wheel driven recumbents often use this kind of transmission, even for every day bicycles.

  • didn't know canoe's went this fast !!!

  • @jcgosselin is it a 4WD?

  • DO WANT

  • well that looks dangerous..

  • wattage ? rpms?

  • wtf you on't know wath that means?

  • I don't know exactly. Francesco is a good amateur cyclist. He told me he can climb the Ventoux at 20 km/h on his upright carbon bike. But you have to know that you produce less power when you are inside a fairing (less fresh air, higher temperature, more focus to control the bike..)

He looks like turning his legs very fast. More than 110 rpm I guess.

  • what happened to him? why did it crash?

    overheat?

  • fog on his canopy. The air intake was not big enough. It is fixed now

  • @jcgosselin thats a lie, He crashed because you guys didn't use Ducktape !!

  • WOW.. thats an awesome Bike:) cheers..

  • HPV = Human Powered Vehicle, so no, this is not a prototype it is an attempt at a record in a vehicle powered only by human energy input.

  • cheaterpatrol, i know your just playing dumb to get a reaction

  • looks like a dolphin

  • It looks like a bullet train, VERY COOL!!!

  • it probably feels so fast riding that low down to the ground, looks like fun!

  • icic!. may be he use his helmet to brake?

  • loool =D

  • how does he breath if they tape everything?

  • Yes, there is a hole in front of the fairing and the air can also enter the fairing through the wheel openings.

  • If the circulation inside that thing is so bad as to allow fogging of the wind screen can you imagine how bad it would be to fart inside?

    Did I do that?

  • The bicycle looks pretty fast and light. Perhaps get a better/faster rider and then they can do the cool bike justice.

  • OMG I can't believe how many stupid people comment, you must just like to hear or see your own words. It's a freaking HPV hour attempt, meaning how far can someone travel in one hour in a Human Powered Vehicle. Putting any kind of motor or engine other than one human in it would disqualify the attempt. I know where to come and find the biggest dumbasses in the world, on youtube.

  • cp001, you take the prize. The whole concept is for the VEHICLE to be HUMAN POWERED, what part of that don't you understand?

  • of course you need a human to drive it, it is not supposed to be a robot competition and a robot could not drive it safely in heavy traffic yet. One day maybe.

  • haha this guy is either a troll or really stupid. either way, its hilarious.

  • Internet troll is trolling

  • should have some holes in the body, like a motorbike helmet has to to stop misting

  • nonmi pare proprio un record

  • A really basic one costs, like, $10k US.

  • couple of suggestions

    1) put a top on it to reduce drag

    2) get somebody who is pumped up on steroids should be easy to find

    3) maybe put an electric engine in to help.

  • Did you even watch the video?

    1) they put a top on it

    2) Steroids would make the guy heavier

    3) An electric engine would make it heavier, and the goal is human powered.

  • no they should put a top on the thing to cut down wind.

they takes the steroids, you dont put the steroids on the bike

electric engine would make it go faster

    you are a dumbass

  • YOU FUCKING DUMBASS!!!! DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE VIDEO!?!?!?! They DID put a top on it. 3:00. You can see them putting the top on it.

The idea is to see how fast he can go just under his own power. You are such a fucking dumbass.

  • jez dude, relax dont give yourself a heart attack

  • OOOOhhhhh thanks sooo much for your 'free advice' ! Gosh, you are dumb as hell, for fuck sake you amateur, it has to be HUMAN POWERED, not motor powered, can you get that in your retarded brain?

  • Comment removed

  • Please watch the video till the end. The bike is fully faired.

Francesco is just warming up when he rides without the top.

  • Yeah I watched to the end and thought - oh he was only riding to the beginning of the track. Now my comment doesn't make sense

  • EPIC wtf-bike FAIL with added adhesive tape.

    LULZ! ^ ^

    french wtf-bike is WIN

  • lol 3:19

  • 7'20'' show the girl with the panties: she looks cute but picture blurry.

  • you have fog-treatment for the windows now? Good luck on your record

  • Awesome I wish I could have one. I like the fairing design a lot. and the covered rear wheel has to be fast!

  • It looks like the tire will saw his helmet

  • I totally second that... >_>'' scary to drive for sure.... at least there is a metal bar between him and the front tire...

  • would suck ass to crash that

  • 速度真够快的哦~~

  • I want that bike lol

  • how fast is he going

  • c'est vite

  • what is the velocity????

  • on second thought I take it back.... just the camera postion

  • jcgosselin,

His legs look over-extended to me, at the BDC of the pedal stroke. Is the seat or boom adjustable?

(Coming from a collegiate racer.... knows a little about bikes ;-)

  • What are you seeing? His legs never fully extend. I think it's his position that might be throwing you off.

  • See my comment above my first one :-) The camera position threw me off, his leg extension looks fine in later shots.

If his legs did fully extend that would be bad; ideally you want just a tad short of full extension, to prevent strain (and on an upright bike, hip rocking), and to allow power to be developed through the BDC of the pedal stroke.

  • poor man like he is going to be locked up so

  • from where does he take air??

  • There is an air intake at the front of the fairing. Most part of the air goes into a grey tube to the face of Francesco. The other part goes to the canopy to avoid fog formation.

You can see the air intake and the grey tube at 3:37 (you have to pause) of this video.

  • I miss Europe..

  • Yeah he needs something along the lines of a cycling "time trial" helmet to smooth along that rear tire.

  • Actually, all the bike is faired. Francesco only rides "top less" to warm up before the attempt.

  • Why don't you try to get David Millar to give it a go in your bike?

  • David Millar is an interesting cyclist but as far as I remember, he has been involved in doping affairs. Too bad as he looked like a clever guy.

  • So what about the doping? Besides he's most probably being clean for many years now. I am simply saying, "why not get a top pro to give it a go in your machine?" - as they will most likely go much faster than you

  • how hot does it get in the shell? i cant imagine much air circulation inside because of aerodynamics and such

  • Last July 2008, Francesco rode a complete hour and it was only 24°C inside the fairing at the end. The air was wet and the weather was cloudy.

But it can be very hot inside if the weather is sunny.

  • the helmet is holding him back.

  • cool. There was a guy in Motherearth magazine who had a shockabsorber with a gear connected to the sprocket. Everytime he hit a bump the shockabsorber helped move the bike. Some writer wrote about it and tried it out. He was going like a bat out of hell.

  • Nice bike, nice to see an european initiative that is ambitious (or crazy) enough to make a serious attempt.

    Hope it will be succesfull.

    /FVDW

  • Hi Frederik!

Yes, Francesco's attempt is serious. He rode 10000 km between October 2007 and April 2008 to get fit for the hour record. He should try again soon.

There was another serious attempt from Damjan Zabovnik on the same track. He started to ride at an average 87.5 km per lap but did not manage to keep the pace. From his experience, the track is faster then Opel test track in Germany, so the CERAM track should be one the fastest HPV track in Europe.

    Want to make a try ? ;-)

  • FYI, Francesco Russo made another trial on the same track today. The bicycle seemed fixed but the riders was a bit sick and not strong enough to ride his machine for an hour.

  • 86 km/h is 53.44 mph, and the world record HPV stands at 64.3mph thats over 10 mph faster, and when at above 50 it is so hard to grab those extra mph! good attempt but looking at the design, i would say a lot of drag is being created by the open top design. try making the bike into a capsual and it may give that extra 10mph. good luck next time!

  • Who rode 64.3 mph ?? When and where ?

The bike his fully faired (look at the video till the end).

  • We checked. Nobody rode 64.3 miles in the hour. Current record is held by Canadian Sam Whittingham with 86.7 km which is 53.9 mph. 200 m sprint is also held by Sam Whittingham in the Varna with 130.36 kph which is 81 mph.

So I don't know where you eared about a 64.3 mph record...

  • Nice! Out on the street one only has to worry about getting hit by lowriders, which I think your fairly safe in Europe. How fast did it go?

  • 86 km/h. So it was likely to break the HPV hour record (HPV=Human Powered Vehicule)

  • Was likely? Will it? What is the average speed for that record?

    Thanks for your info.

  • it needs some type of vent.. so it doesnt fog up?

like a scoop going back, away from the wind?

  • Now make a motorized version and you'll get like 3 million hits.

  • No need to get 3 million hits...

  • To kyleain: you don't get it all, HPV means Human Powered Vehicle, not engine powered vehicle, so suggesting that, is like suggesting that you should ride by bicycle a marathon

  • Nice road.

  • It can be nice, it is a speed track! The CERAM circuit is located north of Paris, France.

  • Real, very nice design, so smooth!

What about two tiny retractable wheels on the side? I understand it was build for one-time record run?...

Best of luck for the Next time!

    Martin,

    industrial designer, Montréal

  • You can imagine fully faired recumbents with retractable wheels for a practical use. As you wrote, the Ristretto is a record machine, not intended for a practical use. Note that to break the 24 hour record, the Canadian Greg Kolodziejzyk had to stop many times so he used one tiny retractable wheel to ease the pit stops.

  • Nice shooting guys! Very interesting start with the guy and his powered skates. Thanks for posting this important documentary of a historic attempt in recumbent biking racing to our group.

    Merci,

    Gary

  • Thank you Gary. It would have been even much better if Francesco broke Sam Whittingham's record! "Next time", he said...
