@werderwayne My reply is about 4 months late, but to answer your questions about my synthesized Scarlatti: It's played by hand by me (as documented in the video info box). I've done about half of another sonata just as a fast test to try a 3/4 speed recording technique, but that's not on youtube... I also remember that Scarlatti / BankAmericard commercial. I got into Walter Carlos and synthesized Bach after hearing Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring from Switch-On Bach during a nature show on dolphins.
This is very close to the Carlos version, but I can hear where you made differences, some chordal, some ornamental. Nice job!
I love the Carlos albums. They were my introduction to synthesizer in the 1960's.
I believe you did perform this. But maybe, next time, you might want to alter the patches just a tad more so they are "Carlos--like" but not too close (lest it confuse some people).
@clydesight My reply is about 5 months too late, but just to set things straight again on my synthesized Scarlatti, my patches are completely different than Carlos'. I did it in the style of Carlos but didn't listen to and imitate the timbres Carlos used. The fact that there may be confusion is because of how Carlos-like I managed to get it to sound overall.
Wow.I liked that! However, would love some lewdness, a pastiche like Mahler 6th symphony some hebrew tunes, some negro and Arabian eastern European modes.. Make it a pop ethic thing. I'm gonna try my hand at allusive Bach transpositions. Voices and orchestral arrangements with farts, bass clarinets ,slurping sounds ,birds, tigers ,outdoorsy sounds, toilet flush, truck noise. There is a virtual world.Ooh I'm sooo excited. I will become a genie. Genie oblige!
@belovedconsole I can't figure out whether you're being sarcastic or not. Just to clarify, since maybe you didn't read the video info box, this is completely my performance and my synthesis using the Alesis Andromeda synth. All the sounds are different than Carlos', so yes, listen to Carlos' version then mine, and you will see it's not anything like the original recording.
@Elhardt I just now realized that I had a bunch of email from people responding to my comment. I hadn't ever checked my emails on here. The comment was completely in error-- I used to be an alcoholic and I would leave stupid comments and completely forget. I am very sorry. I just deleted my original comment but now realize I shouldn't have-- so that people could see my idiotic comment that everyone was responding to. Very sorry again, I have been sober for 2 years now and this was terrible
@belovedconsole There's some similarities, but there are some differences as well. This definitely isn't Wendy Carlos's version "transposed into a non-western-tuned paradigm."
What the hell does that mean, anyway? Transposing something up or down doesn't suddenly change its "paradigm." The frequency ratios between the notes is still the same.
For anyone who's curious, you can hear part of Wendy Carlos's version of this piece over at Amazon. Look up "The Well-Tempered Synthesizer."
@ProphetVS I wrote that comment drunk, forgot about it, and just now discovered it and am deeply sorry. It is meaningless, I cannot remember writing the thing except I came here and there was the comment. I apologize to viewers and have personally apologized to the author. It is obvious from the first notes this is not the original Carlos recording and there are all sorts of interesting things happening with this version. I do not drink anymore, I'm sorry I was so rude and completely wrong.
@belovedconsole I have WALTER carlos rendition of this piece since 1971 and I know every single note and sound; and believe me: This is NOT the original.
@Elhart: You did it very well, it sounds fantastic and in my opinion captures the spirit of the original arrangement for this beautiful score. Please, dont be disturbed for 11 year old kids who have a lot of time to waste at youtube (and knows nothing of music).
@belovedconsole You must be the world's most accomplished expert in psychopathology if, after listening to this musical offering, you are able to determine that the person who uploaded it is a sociopath. Of course, it is probably closer to the truth that you are probably a fuckwit who likes to give the impression that he is a somebody and not a nobody.
@MaxwellTurn I am sorry for the horrible comment. It was written drunk and I just discovered it. I don't drink anymore, for obvious reasons. I have personally apologized to the author, but I cannot easily undo such stupidity I offered in that comment. I'm sorry for the negativity I caused.
Amazing..more clean and Beautiful than Carlos'...especially the Bach links...pristine: as Bach must have 'seen' the structure himself...the 'slow' is so perfect ....
absolutely stunning performance! I enjoyed your Bach-recordings very much, but this is my favourite! You really capture all the details and nuances of the music, and because of your selection of sounds, it's possible to hear all details in the structure very clearly... I almost prefer this to a "traditional", instrumental recording... :)
How long did it take to record this? I guess it was a lot of work! I really hope that you find the time to record the ending too! Keep up the great work!
I would love to hear this entire piece in this style. I really enjoy your arrangements of these classical pieces. I hope you consider producing an entire album. Please continue posting. Thank you!
I tried doing K491 on my Andromeda and I can't get it to sound as good as yours. I did Goldberg Variations and it came out great though. I am going to upload and hope you favorite it so it gets some hits!
MoonSideMKDS, first off, I can't remove the 25 second intro since I know of no way of replacing a video with a new one. Second, the intro gives info about the video, like who did it and what synth was used. Third, because youtube allows you to grab the play slider and move to a forward position in the video, anybody can easily skip over the intros in all of my videos.
To Neyowolf: I'm considering doing an album and with the youtube comments I've gotten, it has encouraged me to think about it more seriously. It's hard work though and I have other things I also want to do. But if I do, I'll put a video with excerpts from it so people will know about it.
Excellent! Reminds me of the time I bashed my hand with a hammer while working on my car and listening to "Switched on Bach". Your A6 is in the right hands. Lets hear more!
I have to agree with many of the commenters below. Your work has the spirit of WC's music, but your selection of patches is much more pleasing to the ear. Carlos tends to surprise with lewd, blaring sounds at the wrong moments, like the proverbial shot of Baileys in an otherwise good drink ;)
Excellent work, really. Not just on the mechanical interpretation, but also the overall sound composition. If you ever make an album, I'd most definitely buy it.
To blackmuzzle: Thanks for your compliments. However knowing Carlos' work like the back of my hand and since I started listening to it in 1974, I can't think of a single instance of Carlos being lewd with blaring sounds at the wrong moments (beyond the appropriate use in What's New Pussycat), nor have I ever heard such a criticism in my entire life. Carlos' Scarlatti pieces that influenced mine are very similar to mine in timbre, and also lack lewd, blaring sounds at the wrong moments. :-)
absolutely brilliant performance and transcription. very few pieces transcribed to the synthesizer manage to not only keep the virtuoso performance intact, but allow a casual listener with an untrained ear to hear parts of the music normally obscured to them when performed with traditional instruments.
you must come out with an album - some of the best transcriptions since carlos - but with arguably better tuning and equal performance.
Thanks wndr for your kind and insightful comments. With all the interest I've generated, I may come out with an album of this stuff. It's tedious hard work though, and one really gains an appreciation for what Carlos accomplished.
as i am not a musician, i probably should have said "timbre" instead of tuning.
tho i enjoyed carlos' experimentation tuning, i sometimes think that such tuning take away from the sparkle and brilliance which makes the complex composition so much easier for the novice ear to take in and process.
also, unless i am mistaken, carlos' tuning experiments came to fruition on digital synths.
i suppose i am biased to analog synths for classical transcriptions.
Without the "original" well tempered performance side by side for me to compare, This performance is indestinguishable from W.C.'s. Is there an Instrumental timbre in this version that is altered enough to make it distinguishable from The WTS? This music peaked my interest in Classical(Baroque) for me as an adolescent. Wonderful
To grumpyinNH. If you had the WTS to compare, then you'd hear that mine is very different. At no point did I listen to W.C.'s version and try to duplicate anything. In fact, I came up with all the timbres in the piece weeks before I even knew what I was going to be using them for. But since I was programming sounds in the style of W.C., the end effect is that even though all the sounds are different, it still sounds like W.C.
other than the fact that only WC so far has managed to figure out how to transcribe scarlatti for an analog syth, this really has nothing to do with the WC performance.
in a way, it's like saying that all harpsichord performances of scarlatti are indistinguishable.
there's a huge difference between elhardt's performance and WC's recording... i'd argue that elhardt's performance might be better - as are his tunings and choice/texture of the analog synth output.
I'm not sure what you're asking exactly. I recorded it using the Alesis Andromeda synth, but that's stated in the video. If you mean what computer or software, that would be a Mac G4 running Cubase version 4.1.
The problem with the younger scarlatti's sonati is if they are not played well, they don't grab you, a catch 22. Enough practice will bring out the genius on a synth, harpsichord, harp, banjo... anything.
Not to take away from the synth, the fact that it does sound great is a testament to the player, which, fittingly enough, was exactly why Dominico Scarlatti wrote the sonati, for his student the princess Maria Barbara of Spain. To play this sonata, this is true riches, and a true gift.
you play amazingly well but it would really sound ace on a proper moog modular synth. The Alesis comes quite close and sounds remarkably similar, but theres nothing like that warm sound an old moog makes
Thanks for the comment, but I should have known eventually somebody would claim that it would sound better on a Moog modular even though it sounds "remarkably similar". Since I had to use the Oberheim 12dB filter in a lot of the sounds because the A6 only has one Moog filter, that might explain some of the differences. And I suppose I could have used some tape saturation plug-in on all the sounds, and some external filter, but I'm not sure that would be preferable or practical.
To bbcotigan, If you're under the impression I have complete pieces done, I don't. All I have of W. Carlos style synth demos are in the two videos currently on Youtube. But if you want those in audio mp3 form, I just added the links to them in the video info section to the upper right, so they can be downloaded. I added a little bit of extra treble boost for he ones on Youtube though.
Great sound! Scarlatti would be happy to hear this. Just a possibly stupid question: How to I upload stereo audio to youtube? Is it somehow on cost at moving pictures?
I got a few others asking the same question on my Bach video. So here's info:
As for stereo, I use the free Riva flv encoder to encode my video into flv format, outputting stereo audio at 128Kbps bitrate. Problem is the video bitrate needs to be set quite low, so video suffers. If the output flv file's size in bytes divided by its time in seconds < 44800, then youtube won't mess with it, and you'll have stereo. You can also to a youtube search for "stereo youtube" and others also give info.
Thanks for the compliment. As for playing the whole piece. I was originally only going to do the first half, but then had some more synth timbres and combinations to try out, and continued into the second half. I'd have to come up with more sounds to finish the piece, but this demo was done just to hear my sounds in action and see how they worked out. Since W. Carlos already did this same Sonata on synth, I'd be better off working on pieces not already recorded by W. Carlos.
I think remixed is the wrong word. It's a whole new performance using a synthesizer. People have also performed Bach's works on electric guitar, banjo, saxophones, xylophones, acoustic guitars (youtube video of brandenburg #3 on guitars), and more.
OK good! But I wonder what synthesizer was used for the speech in the beginning?

I can still tell that it is a synthesizer though but I LOVE what you did here ayway!

I'm confused. It's supposed to sound like a synthesizer, similar to W. Carlos' synthesized baroque renditions done on the Moog synthesizer.

Wonderful! Sounds almost exactly like Wendy's.
Love the sound of the Andromeda too. A little out of my price range.

Why didn't you play the whole piece? That was wonderful!

Carlos.

Excellent work. It's a shame the Walter Carlos "became" Wendy Carlos.

Her sex means nothing. Let her accomplishments speak for themselves. :)

"her" sex? Walter Carlos had a SEX CHANGE operation done on himself and "became" Wendy Carlos. What a freak.

Yes!Lots of baroque works can be remixed by updated sound generators with great results, without wasting their musical meaning.
Glenn Gould as well did appreciate Walter Carlos'rendition on analog sinth after Bach's Brandenburg Concertos= Thx.again Elhardt.

I think remixed is the wrong word. It's a whole new performance using a synthesizer. People have also performed Bach's works on electric guitar, banjo, saxophones, xylophones, acoustic guitars (youtube video of brandenburg #3 on guitars), and more.
