  • i saw them in the seventies

  • I have always loved this song and always believed that this would have been a fitting end to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack

  • twin guitar interplay ending is divine!

  • People should quit arguing about what kind of rock it is or if this lineup is better or worse than the original and enjoy the song, cuz it's just too damn good!!!

  • These gentleman are a CLASSIC! Thank the gods for YouTube! Memories were made for me with this band.

  • Miss the original lineup, but this is an outstanding version. Love that the replacements over the years have stayed true to the WA ethos.

  • How many rock bands have really concerned themselves with making their music incredibly beautiful while still be powerful rock n rollers? Whoever you nominate, I think WA are at the top[ of the list.

  • Element of ESCALATION!

  • This sounds like the metallica instrumental.call of kthulu i think

  • @slicknicknirvana

No, let's get the order right - the Metallica instrumental sounds like this; this was first recorded when Metallica were in nappies.

  • The first time I heard this song was from the Live Dates vinyl ablum, ( I was high on MDA) , there was a WICKED Guitar solo Riff that blew me away, If you get a chance try and listen to it. the one here doesn't come close.

  • Great...I decided to play the guitar after I've heard that song for the first time some 30 years ago

  • Comment removed

  • Wishbone Ash Was a big influence to Iron Maiden. You can hear the maiden'esque style from time to time.

  • one side of argus is an epic piece of music. heard it the day it came out and its still brilliant. everything else they did was mediocre.

  • Nice solo, well nuanced but this song is so Spinal Tap

  • @thewalkingowls .. bless, thats the joke....stonehenge is tiny too and you can rock 'til 11.....and owls were cute before HP got 'em, the owl service (cant remember the author)

  • Ha ! ha ! L'époque ou on était complètement stone ,barré , raiddéf !!!!! Souvenirs ....

  • hey.. these 10 people that dislike this video are ABSOLUTELY MORONS AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH CLASSIC ROCK. THIS SONG IS A MASTERWORK, LIKE ALL OF THE SONGS IN THIS ALBUM. ARGUS IS (MAYBE) THE BEST CLASSIC ROCK ALBUM EVER.-

  • @norsunny

Now I've not heard every classic rock album ever, but I really don't think you need to put "(maybe)" in there. "Definately" would be much more accurate.

There are very few albums which have brought me as much pleasure as Argus or for as long. And none of the others are classic rock.

It simply is and always will be brilliant.

  • @MagnusBruce Dude from now on we're friends ! :) I put the word "maybe" cause i thought some people would consider me "stucked" or "blinkered"...OF COURSE ARGUS IS THE BEST CLASSIC ROCK ALBUM OF ALL TIMES !!! Every next song is better than the previous one.

  • @norsunny

In some ways it is better towards the end.

But right now, Time Was is the piece I stick on, and jam along to with my strat when I just want ten minutes of "alone time" to just appreciate something beautiful.

I really really want to play it live, but I need to get a band together with similar interests first!

  • @MagnusBruce oh man..i'd love to play that too but unfortunately i don't play any organ at all ! I'm a huge fan of music (especially prog and hard rock) but never have played anything..i wish you make a group and play all Ashe's songs !! My personal favorites from Argus are Leaf and Stream and Sometime World. But all 7 songs are arguably DIVINE ! Maybe King Will Come is a little better, but that's just an opinion of mine..

  • @norsunny The King Will Come is pretty hard to play well, I can noodle around on some parts of it, but I can never get the bit just after the main solo right.

Sometime World is fun, although I tend to improvise over the vocals rather than play the actual twiddly bits XD

  • @MagnusBruce I suppose that is why Turner and Powell were voted among the "20 best guitarists of all time" !! :)

  • @norsunny

    Which website/magazine was that?

I can't ever recall having seen that.

I'd rank Mark Knopfler extremely highly too, easily in the top 3.

Joe Satriani has got to be pretty high up too. People like Vai or Malmsteen can play things fast and technical but it doesn't sound nice to listen to, whereas Satch can play really technical songs and it still sounds wonderful.

I find it hard to rank guitarists as I listen to quite a few different styles of music, and they require different skills.

  • The real deal. Great performance. Thanks for the Vid.

  • If you get chance to listen to this song on Live Dates, an old double album, that for me is the sweetest solos he's ever played. Much better than this one! Still like this though.

  • Bought my Wishbone Ash LP in 1983. Got 12 in total I think

  • geile Musik -immer noch

  • WOW YEAH THAT IS THE BEST DRUG REALY GREAT GREAT

  • great perfomance of an awesome old school band

  • just stood in the queue at the o2 store for the new iphone with the bass player, was awesome to meet you, good luck in japan and enjoy your new iphone!!

  • Amazing.

  • great version Andy and Ben heaven

  • I really like this song and Wishbone Ash is a very good Prog Rock band. Great sound live.

  • which end of the wishbone bring good luck?

  • Thumbs Up if you hate the new youtube set up!

  • Anyone know what amps Andy is using here?

  • wishbone ash es una de las mejores bandas de todos los tiempos...

wishbone ash is one of the better all time rock bands

  • I've seen wishbone ash about 5 times have their music DVDs, play their music on guitar... got some signed stuff, spoken to andy.... and Wishbone ash are simply one of my favorite bands. My fav lead guitarist they ever had was 'Mark Birch' .. although not one to create their 'best' stuff... his playing and tone was superb. Andy has amazing tone and playing also. His fender supersonics and matamps are great with his pickups and BOSS EQ pedal.

  • I wish we had music like this now!

I wish i was around when this was.

Born in the wrong decade xD

Sounds like Iron Maiden were influenced by these guys.

  • I'm born in 1962 and i love this music ! martingreen1959, you have damn right.....this is music, this is culture.

  • Guitar tones to die for.

  • very true, this is pure joy for guitar buffs, but its a wonder piece in more ways than that. Jeez, how good this band was!

  • I feel sorry for the youth of today, they know nothing of good music.

The late sixties and seventies were a quality time for music and culture. Now everything is so tame and bland.

  • @martingreen1959

    You're wrong and generalizing.

I'm young and I can tell you I listen to real good music

  • @martingreen1959 i am a member of this "youth of today" that you talk of, and i am very in touch with 60's and 70's music and culture, we dont all listen to bllody slipknot or dizzee rascal!!! while i agree with most of your comments, dont be so quick to tar us all with the same brush.

    long live the ash!!

  • @onesths bloody*..... my mistake.

  • It's been said that those who judge by the class are pea wits. Perhaps that's being unkind. Judging by the class is gross oversimplification and even worse over generalization. The wise person takes people one at a time. Some are nice and some are assholes. Some earn one's trust while others are scoundrels: Age, sex, race, ethnicity, political and sexual orientation are often use to judge but the only real way to judge another human being is by their behavior.

  • @onesths just hit 58 today, lived with thisfor so long. claaaaassic music. good taste my friend. tricky dicky jersey

  • incredibles guitars fantastic

  • heard this intro 35 yrs ago and could never forget it, today I play it with my 11 yr old daugther when giving her guitar lessons, and she seem to catch on! its so melodic, relatively easy and fun to do as a duet. Think its perfect as a lesson piece.

  • Seen this band back in 1972 and was hooked! the best unknown band of the era...try to find Pilgran from live dates...it will blow you away! MUST HEAR MUSIC!

  • 17 luty Poznań, przybywam!

  • this IS the kings!

  • Fantazja !!!

  • masterpiece!

  • i don't like "oldies" and i'm usally into faster stuff, but this really is chilling and skillfully played!

  • the seventies produced so many great bands.

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Status Quo, Creedence.......

I am very happy I was a teenager and was able to appreciate the great songs released back then.

and still most of those old codgers can play a pretty mean tune.

This is just one of them.

  • Deep purple, Ten years after, Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac . . . . list goes on =)

  • One of my favorite bands from that most troublesome period known as adolesence..They got better with time..Imagine that..

  • Collossal and Superb.

    Peace.

  • The sound of my childhood. Makes me cry. sentimental journey...

  • Pure Class.

  • best rendition since the original with the wonderful Mr. Ben Granfelt

  • One of the best rock song and guitar solo ever ! LOVE IT !

  • Wooooooooooooo

  • I seen them live last night in St. Helens.

It's the second time I've seen them.

They never fail to impress me, they are absolutely amazing!

  • I'm in St .Helens a lot. "Argus"was my favourite album when I was at school. Send us a message if you can.

  • saw them two weeks ago... THEY DIDNT PLAY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    good gig anyway!

  • Seeing them tonight should be good,

  • Perfect! beautiful!

and also they are great band!

  • saw them for my birthday, best band iv ever seen XD

  • best intro ever!! cant wait to see them in 2 weeks!!!!!

  • this song is awesome !

  • hey Ben, sweaty

    leather pants-remember-haha!

  • i'll always have a good feeling/ connection with Andy and these guys..Ben, Ray are the best guys, Bob, a devoted band member....

  • Argus is one of the greatest rock and roll albums ever made!

  • There is only ONE Wishbone Ash

(& that's the one with Andy in it)

    Great performance.

  • dyu know for a fact that andys (these days) is better than the other other one???? i have the chance to see either one of them in the next few weeks n dno which one to go see...

  • Yep, Wishbone Ash are not onle better vocally than Martin Turners imitation, they are better in all aspects, away from vocals, they are far superior as musicians as well. The current lineup has a diferent drummer & guitarist, but are considered by many to be a superior lineup to the original!!! (and to be honest, I agree).

If you've got the chance, see the proper Wishbone Ash.

  • cheers dude... i did, and it rocked :D

  • I've seen 'em both and yes, the vocals from Andy Powell are better than MT's (there's a short clip of Warrior on my profile from MT, athough it's mostly the opening solo)

I would suggest that given a choice you see this WA, not just because of the sound you'll get is better, but the material they play is more varied. Yes, Argus is arguably the best album ever written, but The Power Of Eternity is not to be sniffed at!

  • Perfect.

  • Wishbone ash are about to go on a u.k. tour with "the groundhogs" and 1 of the greatest live bands going "focus" im gonna get tickets for preston guild hall. Id pay to see focus live but this band look great as well.

  • Wrong! It's not the real Wishbone Ash on tour with Focus. The band on the tour is Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash trying to pass themselves off as the real deal.

  • ah i see im mainly going there to see focus to be honest with you the other bands will be a bonus you should check it out if it comes to a town near you focus are a really great live band.

  • @saintsluggo Bit late to say now, but Martin Turner has as much right to be "Wishbone Ash" as Andy Powell, being one of the founding members.

  • @saintsluggo Bit late to say now, but Martin Turner has as much right to be "Wishbone Ash" as Andy Powell, being one of the founding members.

  • Still great after all these years.

  • Here here. A good feeling came back to me again there.

  • From a musicological point of view this band does not exhibit the usual characteristics of the gendre i.e. either complex key changes and/or apparently dissonant melody and counterpoint lines (à la Yes) or sublte and often lengthy harmonic variations or 'progessions' of an initial melody line and repeated melodic motifs (à la Genesis).

Their main innovative element lay in the beautifully harmonized guitar solos played by two guitarist as opposed to many other band's later studio overdubs.

  • yep.

  • there is an affiliation between Ben and Ray, best line-up Andy's ever had...

  • they are great iv seen them a couple of times ad theres not many words to describe them

  • Wishbone Ash isnt Progressive Rock, but they made the first attempt to step forward...

  • how is this supposed to be related to prog rock? the song its ok... its a slow song in the same semi-epic vain of some deep purple-led zeppelin songs... it sounds almost as too old o rock n roll but too young to die by ethro tull,,, but this is not prog.... is more like the anchestor of epic-power metal

  • Progressive rock (often shortened to prog or prog rock) is a form of rock music that evolved in the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of a "mostly British attempt to elevate rock music to new levels of artistic credibility." Considering that WA began in 1969 in the UK, and continue to this day, I would say that they have more then earned the lable "Prog Rock."

  • Disagree - when a band exists is irrelevant. Prog rock is about silly time-signatures, constant key changes, massive drum kits, over-the-top stage shows, 10-minute songs (not the occasional one like Phoenix), being pretentious, ridiculous album covers etc.

wishbone don't fall into that category.

(i love prog rock by the way)

  • Not a bad insight. I saw them several times in this perid and they were one of the first double lead groups. Very "old Elglish".

  • @treyzzer

Well the funny thing is, the ancestor to epic-power metal IS Progressive Rock.

  • @ledsabbath165 And that is unfortunate, because while Power/Prog Metal is certainly not lacking in technical ability, I have yet to hear any of it that approaches the sheer artistry, soul, and spirit of adventure evidenced by classic prog.

  • I love this song SOO much !

And yesterday they were playing in Mezidon, I was here, and MY GOD !

    It was soooo cool !

Perfect, what a wonderful moment I lived.. <3

Thank You so much for yesterday evening, Whishbone Ash !

    And for the T-shirt too ! <3

  • hmmm the beginning is really cool but it takes a little too long..

  • still the same, still the best, twelfe times seen since 1973, twelfe times a new birthday. THANK YOU ANDY

  • May God bless Andy Powell for carrying this wonderfull stuff through the centuries!

  • try to play this; so difficult

    these are real musicians

  • its easy peasy lemon sqeezy

  • ok after a while it's not too difficult...

but they are still real musicians ;)

  • yes of course, you cannot denie that the ash rule the world

  • Total perfection...

  • omg...he can make his guitar sing!

  • perfection!!! no song will ever be better!!!

  • yeahhhhh they are soo good

  • Though 'Andy Powell' is the only remaining member from original band. This is still greatness.

  • Awesome to the max, and seeing them on may 16th

  • im seeing them on the 30th of april :D

  • Saw them on 24th April & 28th April, seeing them again on 12th May & 16th May... see you there JoshFluctuations! ;)

  • God save Andy

  • 5:00 absolutely beautiful guitar work

  • buen ritmo ;), q sigan asi xD

  • quality m8

  • Amazing !

  • I saw these on there Number the Brave tour in Hull City Hall and they are as i remember them outstanding one of the best bands ive seen.

  • Cool! I'm seeing them next month in a small club in my town, very looking forward to it. :)

  • Wishbone ash are the TWIN QUITAR

    founders ... other bands like

    Iron maiden and more bands

    who played NWOBHM copyright WA

  • The Ash were a great band, absolutely sui generis. They did create the twin guitar approach.

But what they created, Thin Lizzy perfected.

  • Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy are both great bands, but, to be honest, songls like this, Warrior, Blowin' Free and The King Will Come cannot really be classed as anything other than perfection.

  • cause the are Maiden´s influence!!

  • soooooooooooo good

  • actually, Ben and Ray were THE BEST! wonderful musicians...

  • Hey Andy thanx 4 takin me there, finding me roaming, lost in London, haha. Ben, best next to Ted, thanx for friendship, thanx Ray for ur company on the bus, best drummer for 'feel' next to Steve, sory Bob did not get to know u so well, i'm a lucky girl..

  • I love wishbone Ash. They pioneered the harmony guitar and did it so very well. This is my favourite track, lyrically, harmonically and from a guitarist's point of view lots of feeling in the solos.

  • soooo good =)

  • great song...the beginning sounds a bit Iron Maiden-ish

  • Reminds me of afraid to shoot strangers!

  • First saw them in 1970 then Martin's band just a few weeks ago. After 38 years had forgotten how much I loved the music. Just booked to see Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash in London in May. Still got to be some of the greatest rock guitar ever.

  • Bloody brilliant

  • I was expecting the vocals to have lost much of the quality over all the years, but I was pleasantly surprised! Gota love WBA!!

  • any chanch somebody could post STANDING IN THE RAIN from the ALMIGHTY BLUES dvd.?

  • 百眼的巨人アーガス

  • A great version considering these guys have been around for so long...not much lost in the vocals...always loved this song

  • It's a great song, but I think you should make a rockcover. I think the song is too soft. I want destortion.

  • I always have loved this music and have all their records from the 70s. I'm from the US but have always been partial to a lot of bands from over there. I've just never had the opportunity to see them perform live. They still have a great sound. Andy Powell has done a great job with keeping things going.

  • what a great song i love it

  • In 15 and i went to see wishbone, groundhog and focus at the leas cliff hall in folkestone and the bass player of wishbone gave me his PLECTRUM its purple 1.1+ MM a nice pic i play bass and now its all i use.

but he didnt just chuck it in the crowd he came out to talk to the sound manager outside of the backstage area and i pulled him to one side and told him that i play bass and he said thats realy good and gave me his pic!!! i was floating on air after that!!!

    !!!WISHBONE ASH ARE LEGENDS !!

  • I was there last night too!

Tony McPhee was brilliant on guitar for Groundhogs and Focus were f*****g awful but Wishbone Ash were absolutely amazing! You got his plectrum aswell how awesome is that!

  • elo m8 i wentn watchd that too lol, im from dover.they were fkn gr8

  • Wishbone Ash are lengends; however that is Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash, not the Wishbone Ash led by Andy Powell

  • Eh? that's Andy Powell playing!

MTWA are excellent, too, though :)

  • I was replying to pleb291's comment a few pages back. Sorry if that confused you. My comment was put to the top. Don't ask me why!

  • I miss the voice of Martin a little bit. But it's magic - I'm trapped again, as I was in 1972. There's still a fire in there!

Before I die, I'll try a Flying V and an Orange-Amp. Somehow I must manage to do that.Seems to me more exciting than being a locomotive driver.

  • Saw 'em at Bickershaw festival in '71.

Saw 'em again last night in MK stables.

They're touring the UK on their 'Real Deal' tour. Eh? Well they they had to call it something I suppose ;-)

Believe it or not they're *better*.

OK the vocal ranges are knocked off a fraction. But the slickness of the guitar work and drumming .... It was good in '71.

    Its ****ing phenomenal now ;-)

    Best night out in ages.

  • martin dould NEVER hit thod high notes in the first place lol

  • They were great at MK Stables-probably the best on that tour

  • GREAT! WHAT CAN I SAY MORE?

  • Są poprostu zajebiści nie ma to jak stara gwardia TO WŁSNIE Z TYCH LAT POWSTAŁA ___metallica

  • I've seen this band more than any other, about 25 times at the last count over five or six years. Lineup changes, the lot. They're still awesome - guitarists obsessed with the newest, fastest shredders could learn something from these guys.

They really did pioneer dual-guitar harmony and it's difficult to find anyone that betters them.

  • I miss Ben Grandfelt. It's a great sound.

I warmed them up twice...they're superb guys !

Andy Powell is a pioneer in the rock field...he's been there and done that...a legend !

    thanks for the posting !

  • Beautiful! I love this video!

  • Thanks for sharing Becky-Great guitar playing!

  • Fab song ive been to see them bout 10 times

  • keep rockin andy, u the best

  • like the bit at 3.36 when he goes to grab the whammy and misses it !

  • he like s a flying V dosent he!

  • Andy can still play a bit, can't he?

  • Oh yeah. Seems a bit of a shame that he seems to have delegated lead guitar roles to Muddy mostly in the few contemporary videos on youtube; good as Muddy is, Andy is also excellent
