Political protection of a sexual practice is ridiculous. I do not believe it is proper to pass laws stating that homosexuals have 'rights' to have sex with one another and then redefine marriage to include their views. If they can do that, then where will it end? What about pedophilia or bestiality? These are also sexual practices. Should they, too, be protected by law? If homosexuality is protected legally, why not those as well?
So what this person is saying is that tyranny of the majority is justified? I'm sure that Black Americans in 1960s USA would've loved that kind of argument.
@phoney98 oh if you were going to behave like that to every one who "oppresses" you surely you'd be in a solitary confinement! Why is everyone so hot headed and sensitive about gay marriage? seems to be the only topic which by people base their vote/choose their newspaper! =S....but yeah good onya
Wow, Australian politicians are even more out of touch than my lot! The Australian public have been in favour of gay marriage for a long time, and they've long been sick of the influence of religious conservatives in what should be a secular country. Why don't the politicians support the views of the people who voted for them?
I am stunned by the sophistry of some of these politicans (and the blonde lady who said that she believes traditionally marriage is between a man and a woman. If she's not religious wherre the heck did she get this "traditional" view of marriage from?! Also, marriage wasn't traditionally between a man and a woman...it was between a man and many women.)
Yes gays should be able to marry. Why should their lives be all happiness and pleasure! I am gay. I don't want to marry. I want to not be prejudiced against.
(Was half asleep, I'll try that again) I don't see how it's anybody elses business if someone is married or not despite what their race, religion, gender or sexual orientation is.
Here is the reality people. The only reason marriage was only for a man and a woman is because the abrahamic religions preach homophobia and that only a man and a woman can make a child together. Marriage is not a religious institution, if it was, atheists would not be allowed to marry as they have no religion. Marriage is not about procreation, if it was so, infertile opposite sex couples would not be allowed to marry as they cannot make a child of their own. Gay marriage is a right. Simple.
@cyprokka no not at all. buddhism does not mention homosexuality at all in its scriptures, and the dalai lama himself supports gay marriage, yet no buddhist country supports gay rights. in fact only christian nations support gay marriage. in fact about a half of all countries that have their states religions as christianity support gay marriage. christianity if anything has helped gay marriage. much more than atheism anyway. even iceland has a gay prime minister.
@WhoCanResistClicking buddhism is not an abrahamic religion. And there are a number of reasons as to why predominantly buddhist nations do not have a strong support for gay marriage. One would be due to other religions being large in following as well, such as christianity, judaism and islam. Also many of them such as sri lanka were for generations under british, spanish or other european rule with buggery laws punishing natives for gay acts.
@cyprokka i know buddhism is not abrahamic, that was my point. a recent survey of oecd countries found the the most homophobic countries were japan and south korea, the only non-abrahmic countries. even behind turkey, a muslim country. even estonia, europes most atheist country, has extremely low support for gay rights. all im saying is the christianity has done more for gay rights than atheism has, so dont blame anything on christianity. and if your wondering, im atheist.
@WhoCanResistClicking You are misunderstanding me. You seem to be referring to christians as in the followers of the religion. I am referring to christianity as in the bible and the religious teachings. The bible and the religious teachings of christianity have not done anything to promote gay marriage or gay rights in general as the bible clearly states that homosexuality is an abomination. Whereas there is no religious text or teachings for atheism.
@cyprokka well christianity only affects those who follow it. the scriptures themselves have no effect on those who dont believe in them, until christians themselves act upon them. and if the christians themselves are supporting gay rights, as i have shown, then the scriptures are doing nothing. so really there is no difference.
@cyprokka and no, there are also many scriptures within the bible that people use to support homosexuality, such as not judging people and accepting others. and these scriptures have been seen being used actively to support gay rights by christians such as in sweden, were churches are seen flying rainbow flags of acceptance and love. and in south africa where desmond tutu fought for gay rights in the name of god, and successfully to.
@WhoCanResistClicking No religion, institution, ideology, etc. thats older than judaism taught an irrational hatred towards same sex attracted people. This is where homophobia was truly born. Without it, heteronormativity wouldnt have spread, atheistic communists wouldnt have been homophobic and countries today around the world would be less fearful and hateful towards the idea of changing the union of marriage to be inclusive of all couples, regardless of their sex.
@cyprokka no homophobia came during the roman times when people discovered the importance of semen and its reproductive purposes. it soon became a sin to "spill ones seed" and eventually that worked its way into christianity. this has happened in many ancient empires, in an attempt to preserve semen for the use of reproduction, so their populations would grow quicker.
@WhoCanResistClicking Yes, homophobia came during the roman times, around the time of the reign of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman Emperor. He made Christianity the official religion of Rome and banned paganism, along with homosexual activity, which was common in pagan traditions. It didn't 'eventually' work its way into Christianity, homophobia was already present in Judaism, which was around way before Christianity and way before any signs of homophobia in Rome.
@cyprokka i think richard dawkins puts it best when discussing morality and the bible, in that people do not live by the scriptures in the bible, but simply pick and choose the many verses in the bible to use as their guidance, and many people pick homosexuality as wrong, because the government wants to preserve the traditional family to spur good population growth and stability. soon people will no longer consider homsexuality wrong just as they dont think eating shellfish is wrong anymore.
@WhoCanResistClicking Thats irrelevant. The point I am making here is that the origin of homophobia lies in Judaism and ancient Hebrews. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Persians, etc. all viewed sex as a wonderful thing. The Hebrews were the first to look upon sex, genitalia and nudity as shameful and private. A great deal of their laws discussed sex crimes, no other people before them held these beliefs. Whether christians today pick and choose what to believe is not the point.
@WhoCanResistClicking I have studied this topic a great deal and I have yet to find any religion, culture, etc. prior to jewish hebrews that banned homosexuality. Could you please state at least one culture or religion that criminalised homosexuality before the jews? And then site your source please.
@heathirving The Nazis were pretty big on persecuting many minority groups, one of which were homosexuals. Being a Christian, Hitler rejected Jewish beliefs and homosexuality. This was greatly helped by the Catholic church, whose centuries long program of anti semitism and homophobia had been ingrained into Europe to the point where few wanted to stand up for the Jews or the gays when they were gassed.
@cyprokka the christian scriptures have hundreds of sections condescending heterosexuality, yet only a few on homosexuality. it is not the scriptures that do the harm, it is the christians that interpret them. i have never seen an atheist fighting for gay rights in name of atheism, but i have seen many christian fight for gay rights in the name of christianity. if is christianity's fault that gay marriage doesnt exist, then why do no hindu buddhist or atheist nations have it?
@WhoCanResistClicking There is NO section of the bible that attacks heterosexuality, it attacks adultery, unchastity, etc. However, it CLEARLY attacks homosexuality, particularly in Leviticus, where it states that men who have sex with men are an abomination. Again, you would have to be specific on what country you are referring to. India for example has a large population of hindus, sikhs, buddhists, muslims and christians. Only hinduism is strongly pro-homosexuality.
@WhoCanResistClicking As for atheist nations, this would only refer to communist states as far as I know. Again, atheism doesnt automatically mean liberalism and pro-homosexuality. All the old atheistic communist nations criminalised homosexuality. They criminalised anything they saw as part of the capitalist way of life. Is it possible that after generations of homophobia embedded into society from christianity, they felt that legalising it would destroy the society they where trying to build?
@cyprokka the christian scriptures have hundreds of sections condescending heterosexuality, yet only a few on homosexuality. it is not the scriptures that do the harm, it is the christians that interpret them. if is christianity's fault that gay marriage doesnt exist, then what is stopping hindu buddhist and atheist countries? it cant be christianity.. it is plain old simple homophobia. every country has homophobia, the only difference is that christian countries have an "excuse".
@WhoCanResistClicking Many, if not all of those countries have been at some point under the rule of a christian nation or empire such as britain or spain. For example, before british invasion, india was very tolerant of lgbt people. The rest have experienced globalisation of western/christian values. It is not solely christianity thats the problem. It is also judaism and islam.
@cyprokka ah no. nepal a country never under european control, only legalised homosexuality recently and that was only because western countries pressured it to. also the only reason india legalised homosexuality was because of pressure from europe and america. thailand only signed the un declaration against lgbt violence because the us told it to. south korea remains today as extremely homophobic. japan is only gay friendly because of western culture. and did you read my other comments?
@WhoCanResistClicking Nepal was under an absolute monarchy until the early 90s and then under communist rule until a few years ago. Both of which hated homosexuality. The communists in particular were known to have an extreme dislike for homosexuality, claiming it to be a product of capitalism. Homosexuality was legalised right after the monarchy had ended in 2007. If western countries pressured legalisation of homosexuality, then why is nepal also introducing gay marriage?
@WhoCanResistClicking The point is that there was absolutely no ban on homosexual relations pretty much anywhere until judaism came along and gave life to christianity and islam too. This is evident in all societies studied by anthropologists and historians.
@WhoCanResistClicking christianity itself has done absolutely nothing to better the support for gay marriage. The nations that are predominantly christian and with strong gay marriage support also have a large amount of non religious people and revolutions have occurred. There is a number of other factors to all this but christianity itself has not made the situation better, on the contrary it is a big reason as to why gay marriage doesnt have more support.
@cyprokka Ecuador was the second country in the world to offer lgbt citizens protections under the law, it is also the most christian nation in terms of percentage of population. Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Phillipines, Iceland, Andorra and Colombia are 7 of only 20 countries that allow same sex adoption. All have christian populations making up more than 90% of their population. Thats hardly atheistic.
@WhoCanResistClicking I never said atheism=pro-homosexuality. There are many atheists who are homophobic. But thats not the point. Im not saying every christian is homophobic either. Im saying christianity teaches homophobia. Whether every christian gets the message or not is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is christianity/the bible teach hate towards men who have sex with men.

Us younger generations need patience...just wait for these ppl to die off...and the new generation will legalise it..simple as that... history has always shown us this, u cant make sum1 change their beliefs. though they are out of touch with society, once they die, a new generation of leaders will say " why hasnt this ancient law been dismissed?" and thats how we move forward... in the mean time live a life like it is legal and the world will follow
in 1783 a male politician would say 'what? a woman having a job-what an outrage, she should be in the kitchen!' and here in 2011 sits a woman who works with a successful national newpaper. in 1953 another politician would have said 'what? multiculturalism! thats an outrage' and here in 2011 a female muslim woman sits on a panel broadcasting her views to millions. in 2011, two such female politicians say 'what? gay marriage-i won't support it'...THE NERVE OF SOME PEOPLE-BEYOND HYPOCRISY!
(cont'd): That is, 'chromosomal'. Include two additional boxes on applications such that apps read: 'single', 'divorced', 'married', 'husband', 'wife'. Gays get marriage certificates; non-gays get H&W certificates (H&W certificates are exclusively for chromosomal male and female matchups). Thus non-gays become H&W; gays get married. Since gays like to compare themselves to Blacks, consider that USA Blacks got equality, but we did not relabel ourselves as White. Equality was good enough.
I have solved the gay marriage issue. Here it is, since homosexuals change the meaning of every word that they attach to themselves to, it is certain that the term 'marriage' will and should connote something else once it is universally inclusive of gay unions. For the rest of us, let's take on the term 'husband & wife' for our unions and let the gays have 'marriage'. Example: ask a chromosal male and a chromosal female couple, "when did you become H & W", instead of, "when did you get married"?
that stupid bitch with glasses just contradicted herself. she said it has nothing to do with marriage, and then later on when when the host clarifies that she dislikes the RELIGIOUS symbol of marriage, she agrees. what a stupid bitch.
@zeroblue123 humanity constrains the idea of "God" and personifies him/her. Hindus have Brahman, Muslims have Allah, and Buddhists have collective consciousness (which i guess is secular compared to monotheism). "God" , "Allah" and "Brahman" are all the same thing, humanity and our symbolic interactionalism ideology has restricted the *true* concepts and actualities of "God/Brahman/Allah". haha, we just talked about this in my philosophy of religion class today haha good timing
@all4uboom They can't all be the same thing, because the existence of any one of them is incompatible, by definition, with the existence of all of the others. Each religion claims that their conception of God is accurate, and that other conceptions are false. They can't all be right (but they can all be wrong).
@zeroblue123 the only reason why these Deities are "incompatible" is because humanity doesn't *want* them to be compatible. religious-sects want exclusivity with their religion. people don't want to compromise when it comes to religion. "they can't all be the same thing, because the existence of any one of them is incompatible, by definition, with the existence of all of the others." - this is why there won't be peace in the middle east. and yes they can all be wrong, but God can be true
@all4uboom What are you on about, God can be true well which God is true then, there are thousands of different Gods, nope Gods aren't true, Gods are made up, a higher power of some kind obviously does exist but it's not a God, as for what that higher power is no one knows.
1 Corinthians 7:2 " Nevertheless , to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband." Biblically, fornication is sex outside of a man and his wife or a woman and her husband. Thus gay sex, even if sanctioned as marriage by any government, is still FORNICATION, Biblically. Gays may solidify their relationships before a god, but it will not be the GOD of the Bible.
@MamaMario13 because, many of the Labor voting base belong to the socially conservative working classes, aka the Howard Battlers that defected to Howard in his years of power.
"are you happy to see limits on the rights of individuals because they happen to be gay?"

@all4uboom Is that why straight atheists get married?
zeroblue123 11 months ago
@zeroblue123 well no, atheists who get "married" are hypocrites then.

@all4uboom what about Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists who get married?
zeroblue123 11 months ago

They can't all be right (but they can all be wrong).
zeroblue123 11 months ago 4
@zeroblue123 the only reason why these Deities are "incompatible" is because humanity doesn't *want* them to be compatible. religious-sects want exclusivity with their religion. people don't want to compromise when it comes to religion. "they can't all be the same thing, because the existence of any one of them is incompatible, by definition, with the existence of all of the others." - this is why there won't be peace in the middle east. and yes they can all be wrong, but God can be true
all4uboom 11 months ago
@all4uboom What are you on about, God can be true well which God is true then, there are thousands of different Gods, nope Gods aren't true, Gods are made up, a higher power of some kind obviously does exist but it's not a God, as for what that higher power is no one knows.

@MrJohnboy1984 if god is true, why do we have more than 1500 GAY peadophilia accounts within the church. that's higher than regular pedo rates

@all4uboom I dont need to solidify my relationship before God, I have already done that with Santa Claus and all of the other fictional characters
MamaMario13 10 months ago
@all4uboom,
1 Corinthians 7:2 " Nevertheless , to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband." Biblically, fornication is sex outside of a man and his wife or a woman and her husband.
