Ive been trying to get my right hand fast enough for this song which is the reason i never tried it anywhere.Thumpick and index finger.Who would have guessed it.Really hard to do with a plectrum for me anyway.Reverb-slap helps but no sub for blinding speed. Idaho can do without you. Great video.
What a wonderful job! Where were you 30 years ago? I spent weeks learning this song and I Know A Little. It was a couple of months before I felt comfortable playing those two songs in public. It was always harder with two guitarists learning twins, but so much fun. I think it is great you are offereing these lessons. This wonderful media we have now-a-days is such a great learning tool. Thanks for sharing your talents.
Hi Rob! Great to see you online and very, very cool to see you in person at Greenfield Village w/ the three cute ladies singing old 40s tunes. You are a class act! Okay, question: when you start using the thumbpick, is it supposed to feel like your thumb is whacking up against a piece of licorice? ALso, does it help to hold the guitar like a classical so that your thumb pick is at a different angle?
I remember your dad. Tell him that I said hi. I always liked him. Let me know if you have trouble getting through any of the vids, because they are sometimes hard to navigate.
Your dad was a good guy, (and I'm sure he still is.) I remember he had a dry sense of humor and he seemed to enjoy laughing at a lot of the crazier kids.
I have been an acoustic guitar and 5 string player for quite some time. I just added a Fender strat and am now venturing into unchartered waters. This lesson is too cool. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn it. Your extraordinary ability to play is matched by your exceptional ability to teach.
its nice of you to to show us this riff but if you could just slow it down for a few passes in both your playing and your explaining i would be able to get it.you do it slow one pass but its hard to get
I like the thumbpick for flatpicking, because it is fat. I am left handed, so I don't have as much control of my right hand as I would like, so I don't do much of that, but use my fingers to simulate the sound as much as possible.
It never sounds exactly the same, but neither do the hybrid flatpickers who try to play fingerstyle.
We all do the best we can. LOL. I know some guys who can play great, both ways. Doc Watson is one.
hey Rob, I havent seen you in a few years but i just saw you on you tube playing hot rod lincoln. I am still working on have youself a merry little christmas, hope to see you one of these days, keep up the good work. Yours in Christ, Kerry the barber
Hey Kerry, nice hearing from you. My wife still kicks me when I talk about the fact that you cut Allison Kraus' producer's hair, and tat he happened to hear my album playing in the background, and asked me to do a session with her, but when you asked me, I said I didn't want to drive down to Nashville for a session. I wish I would have known her name. When you told me later, I almost flipped.
That is one of the funniest things ever. I loved that album too.
I like 10 to 52 with a plain G. I also use 10 to 46 sometimes.
It depends on what kind of sound I'm looking for,but frankly, I don't do many electric gigs, mostly jazz or swing with an acoustic, so I don't even remember the last time I changed these.
The best way to get it up to speed, is to push yourself, letting yourself miss notes if need be to stay in time, and isolate small segments. Eventually, the notes that you miss will become fewer and fewer, until it's right.
Rob, could you clarify the next segment after we repeat the riff on the A string? I'm getting confused about which string the 6-4-6-7 is on...But I am an idiot so...
Great Lesson! Thank you! But I have to tell you you do look like Paul McCarthy!

Are you using plastic or metal finger picks? Just on the thumb and index finger?
ChumpyShorts 1 year ago
@ChumpyShorts I don't use finger picks on this. Just a Dunlop plastic thumbpick. I have longer nails on my right hand.

You may want to move to 1:22. You also have to remember, this isn't a lesson for beginners.

I am trying real hard to learn how to play (maybe I am too old to learn by now) and your lesson is very clear and right to the point.
ibm1252 3 years ago
Thanks for the lesson! Just curious, what gauge strings do you use? I use 10s but have been thinking of switching to 11s for this type of stuff.
