Hey I have a 2000 tundra with a magnaflow exhaust. I want to put on new headers. Did you have to replace the cats after installing the headers? And what headers did u get? The shorties or long?
@timmytankman I did not have to replace the cats after install. Its been almost three years and no problems, no codes, passes smog here in CA, all good! These are the shorties. Thanks!
@megaterminator64 It sure did. The exhaust sounds more open, as it should be. Kind of hard to explain, but the sound did change for the better. Power you can feel as well. It's alot touchier, and pulling some hills now it does not shift out of OD like it did before. Well worth it!
@megaterminator64 The headers helped the most. I had the exhaust on for a while before the headers, and I could not tell a real difference in power from just the magnaflow, but the headers I could feel the difference. I think once you open up your exhaust from headers it a good idea to keep it going down the line and free it up by replacing the exhaust as well. If you want to wake it up even more, add an intake!
Long tube or short tube? I got a 05 tundra and the guy said that i might only be able to get short tube headers becuz of the lack of room in the engine compartment.. I wont long tube tho.. I can tell that this greatly increased the sound output.. Im gonna put magnaflow magnapacks on it and 3 inch pipes coming from the headers.. I heard the guys and it sounded like a beast
They are shorties. I believe Doug Throtey or something like that makes long tubes. I know some people have them but they might be on 00-04 tundras without the vvti engines.
@HookerNSU 2005-2006 Tundra's have different parts on them which gave them more HP/TQ then previous years. VVTi (Variable Valve Timming with Intellegence). This is why these years have different part numbers for headers. Not sure exactly what is diffferent, but you have more power then 00-04 tundras.
@heep100 Ohh cool.. Didnt no that.. But if i get headers on my truck the guy said that all would happen would my o2 sensors would malfunction and my dash light would come on.. It wont mess my truck up or anything will it?
@HookerNSU Your o2 sensors should be fine if you stick with JBA, Doug Thorley, TRD, which have factory mounts for your o2 sensors. Mine have been fine and I have never shown a dash light and its been almost 2yrs. You might want to find a new exhaust guy.....
@heep100 Yea it is a local shop around my home town.. Logansport LA.. We dont really got any near by shops that do pro jobs lol.. But he has had good reviews with fords and dodges and chevys and stuff but he has never done a tundra in my year model.. I dont really care about my o2 sensors i just wont my truck to run period lol.. I plan on puttin 3 inch pipes.. From my headers.. I got some on my 1975 bronco and it rumbles man
@TomahawksURmum Depends what state you're in. CA, yes its illegal! You'll have to check your state emission laws and standards. It won't mess up your truck, there may be a check engine light on but thats it. It will make the exhaust more free flowing, but im not sure what it will do for power. These trucks a sensitive to engine upgrades. Could be good or bad....
@TomahawksURmum It can increase horsepower for more unrestricted flow however in ALL states a cat is required to pass inspection if it came standard with the car. However their are high flow exhaust that help resolve this issue, Most require changing your manifold to headers.
Hey bud i know this might seem like a stupid question but im very serious, what exactly do headers do for a truck? AAre they basically for more noise?
No problem. Headers open up the exhaust so the engine can exhale better. Your engine is really a big vacum, the more you bring in and out the more performance you will get. Stock headers are very restrictive. Each exhaust port flows into the same header tube, while having headers each exhaust port has its own tube that meets together at the collector. They provide more power, but really changing your exhaust will only produce more sound.
@heep100 Well i have a tundra and all ive done to it is add the k&n cold airintake system and put a flowmaster/magna flow exhaust, even though i did see and feel the change i wanted a little more. I heard headers are the way to go but wasnt to sure. As you see im not the smartest guy when it comes down to cars. So headers will increase h.p you said correct? What brand or type should i go for what would you recommend? And what other upgrades can i do for more h.p? OH &Thanks for all the info!
Headers will increase HP and TQ. I have JBA's becuase they are CA legal, but if you don't live in a commi state then there are multiple options. Search your year for headers on google. For even more power there are underdrive pulleys which reduce drag on the engine making more power. Unichip sells a programmer that can be custom tuned to your truck and its add on's, they claim more hp. Supercharger will give the most hp as will turbos, but these are pricey options.
Hey guys i have a 07 tundra i was thinking of upgrading it w/new headers and new exhaust what do you guys reccomend? Im basically looking for better millage and more hp any suggestions please?
how are these headers in all like can you feel the performance gain and acceleration? Also i plan to do this myself and im a knowledgeable 17 year old that can do this. but you said i have to remove a motor mount?? so will the engine need to be hoisted?
NOw that I have been driving it more the computer has learn and I can feel an increase in power throughout the whole RPM range. If you have worked on other cars before and are fimilar with tools you will be fine, it just takes a while. You have to remove the motor mounts on the driver side to access two nuts. The passenger side you can work around. You need to support the engine from underneath with a jack and a piece of wood under the oil pan. Look on Tundrasolutions, theres alot of info!
@heep100 Exactly TS Kicks but and so does Socal tundras...
I wish i was ballsy enough to do the work myself but I'm just gonna switch out the exhaust with a BA Muffler from Dirtydeedsindutries.... kick ass sounds... i believe that's his channel name too! Good Luck! Great Truck!
The JBA's fit perfect with no leaks, but they are a pain to put on. You have to remove the motor mount on the driver remove the stock manifold. It not that difficult, just takes a long time.

Do you think just the header gave it some power and some sound.

@heep100 just the header did that. did the 14 in magnaflow help more or less than the header

is that an full aftermarket or just an aftermarket header and stock exhaust
megaterminator64 3 months ago
@megaterminator64 Aftermarket header, and I just welded in a 14" magnaflow to replace the stock exhaust.

cat back is just a replacement exhaust from the headers back to the tail pipe.
