What a sense of making videos against sports, "steroid users" All olympic wins have been prepared with steroids. Made videos about nicotine or alcohol users.
@mario0oiram Thank you for your comment. You’ll be glad to know that NIDA has made several videos, including one about nicotine. Check them out on NIDA’s website! While some athletes may take steroids, it’s certainly not all – and the Olympics and almost all other professional sports strongly discourage their use – so much so, that you will be disqualified if you test positive for using steroids. Good luck to you.
Why not start with so called anti-psychotic drugs prescribed to 40 million people in the U.S. like zyprexa? Diabetes, rapid weight gain, irreversible movement disorders and read Robert Whitakers anatomy of an epidemic to discover that they don't even treat the disorders they are marketed for. Then there's alcohol and tobacco. My health is nobody elses business, but if it were I would expect them to at least not be hypocritical about it. "You cant take steroids, but here's some abilify & adderal"
@M1thotyn- The issues you raise about other drugs of abuse are very real, which is why they are also subjects for study at NIDA. Information on tobacco, alcohol, prescription drug and other substances of abuse can be found on NIDA’s website and the NIDA for Teens website. While there, you may want to check out our other videos-they include ones on tobacco and prescription drug abuse. You may also want to visit NIDA’s PEERx website for an interactive look at prescription drug abuse in teens.
@YyJoBb - (continued) This product’s website says: “Our formula is based on extensive herbal research and has been proven to be effective.” And yet there are no studies provided. That combination should always be a “red flag” for you—that an important part of the story is missing. Best to steer clear of these kinds of things.
@YyJoBb - Sometimes people are legally prescribed certain kinds of steroids to treat conditions where there is an insufficient amount of steroid hormone, as in the case of delayed puberty or with diseases that deplete lean muscle mass (like cancer and AIDS). However, what you’re talking about is a do-it-yourself approach that is not backed by science and which could be dangerous for you.
have to rely on stupid info given by muscle magazines who say they dont condone the use of steroids but they all seem to be experts on the subject. there is no "safe" way to take steroids without a doctors help.
you can have more side effects from over dosing on vitamin c haha... not to mention this add would never be put on real american tv because there there is no recent updated REAL studies to back any of this stuff up. i dont agree with illegal drug use but i do not believe that people should always jump to conclusions just based on what people say. they never look for the facts and they think just because a doctor says it that it must be true and that is nowhere near the truth
@MrRanger1987 You are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, as to your comment about “no recent real studies, etc.,” NIDA relies strictly on the science when communicating to audiences about drug abuse and addiction. Our mission is evidence-based, that is, according to what we know, not what we *think* we know.
@NIDANIH yes if a steroid has possible side effects its great to let them be known and every "REAL" study that has been done has shown some of those side effects even in a controlled environment.
@NIDANIH warning people about possibles is great so they know what they could be getting themselves into. but... just like most things in this life there are a list of tons of things that could happen. if they were allowed to be montitored by doctors and given correctly to people the overdose chances and side effect chances would probably be around 1% if that.
@NIDANIH the problem is they were just banned by congress and i did watch the ban... all the doctors said there is no reason to ban it but congress did it anyways. so now there is no way for people to do it safely. just another freedom the government took away because they think they know better.
@NIDANIH i believe that just like anything else even with a doctors help there is still always a chance of something going wrong but thats like. but again, its just another freedom and moral right that we dont get to have for ourselves because government has taken it away. if i abide by my good morals and try to do it safely i will be put in jail and labeled a drug offender because they are on the same class of ban as hardcore street drugs.
also if people are able to smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, drive a motorcycle, skateboarding while doing dangerous stunts, sky dive and be able to black diamond ski, then they should be able to take steroids on their own risk too. making it illegal shows that people are restricted in their freedom for personal choices.
As a society there are many potentially risky activities that we regulate or restrict based on various criteria like age and perceived risks (e.g., driving)and steroids happens to be one. NIDAs role is to understand and communicate the science-backed medical consequences of abusable substances that can hurt people—and which have societal costs beyond those to the individual.
The documentary also quotes national stats, citing that hundreds of thousands of people die from alcohol and tobacco per year, while in 2008, national stats only list 3 confirmed deaths from steroids. More people die from overdosing on vitamins. They also interview media used doctors who've claimed that steroids are dangerous, and the ones they interview admit to having only anecdotal evidence, and no legitimate studies to back their claims. There are sides to steroid use, but few are dangerous.
While the number of deaths associated with steroids may be less than those associated with alcohol and tobacco it is still a public health issue and should not be ignored. Take a look at the recent New York Times article titled Congress, Concerned About Steroids, Reviews Law on Dietary Supplements. Apparently a former college basketball player suffered liver failure because he wasnt aware that the dietary supplement he was taking contained steroids or steroid-related compounds.
Also, theres more than anecdotal evidence on the effects of anabolic steroids. Check out the literature on these substances at PubMed, a site which catalogs science literature on thousands of topics.
I'm just going to throw this out there but maybe he did know? Maybe hes lieing, he did play for a semi-pro basketball team and by then most athletes know the difference. I find it pretty hard to believe he didn't know something that says pro-hormone is not a steroid or steroid like compound. Most likely he didn't follow a proper steroid cycle and post-cycle therapy with his cycle. Or had a pre-existing condition.
@NIDANIH but your speaking about 2 different issues. knowingly taking steroids is different than taking them without knowing obviously. the supplement companies should be regulated as to not put steroids in their supplements so things like what you said do not happen. but that is a totally different issue. purchasing and using steroids is different then the supplement industry trying to profit off of screwing people
People do take steroids at their own risk right now. The reason why they should stay illegal is that if you make them legal and say they're just one more thing people can use in moderation, then teenagers will take in higher frequency to imitate the pros and gain a leg up on sporting competition. Steroids are FAR more dangerous to the teenage body than to a 30 year old grown adult male and even steroid users will be the first ones to admit that.
Why should you ever be able to buy any powerful injectable drug in a pharmacy without a prescription? By the same token, you should be able to buy cocaine in a pharmacy without a prescription? Or how about powerful painkillers?
First off steroids and cocaine are very different, cocaine is know to kill and has years and years of studies backing up that it could cause death the first time you use it. Its dangerous and that why the government does not sell it in a pharmacy. On the other side we have steroids that has only been know to cause 3 deaths and even doctors aren't really sure if they were really steroids related deaths. If they were so bad then why are pharmaceutical companies still making them. Think about that

The government bans steroids because if they're afraid we'll become too strong and then they can't control us anymore.
