Willie Smith does do the singing part of the vocal. Dan Grissom is the vocalist on sweet ballads like "You Let Me Down" from the same session. I'm not sure who does the "grumblin" part on Sassin' the Boss. An interesting tongue in cheek look at problems with complaining at work particularly for black workers back then. The Lunceford band of mostly college grads were very good at sly satire like this. See "Miss Otis Regrets" a great tongue in cheek anti-lynching song
