I was 16, just left home & joined the army, leaving family, friends & a special girl behind.. When this was released i nearly packed it all in & went home to the girl. I stayed put & went on to have a great career but everytime i hear this.... I'm 16 all over again... Great times & Great memories. Thanks for posting this. You made an old man very happy..
@1trufflepig Hey your only 53, in no way are you an old man. Your not old at all. No such thing as old, your just older than some people. But yeah excellent, excellent song, ironically I wasn't even born when this came out, I am 30.
I Saw them live AT March Cambridgeshire 1974, I Think they were at no.1 in the charts at the time..I must say they were amazing..The hall was packed out, and everyone went home happy. Deffo a nicer time to live in..so much more chilled..Love to go back to them days.Whats gone wrong today there not happy unless their causing problems
We all remember songs from our early years and whilst i try to be open minded, when i listen to these tunes i can't help feeling lucky to have grown up in the era i grew up in. When i listen to the Floaters singing 'Float on' it just about sums it up.
So all these guys just disbanded and vanished into thin air? I heard that one of Marcel's sons died last year and one died two years after he did....anyone knows of that?
I was 17 and the singer in the resident band at Baileys Nightclub in Leicester when I met these guys.. They were fantastic, great guys and so professional. Insperational. All great personallities. The 70's will never die. Great memories.
Marcel was born in Manchester, youngest member of "The Sweet Sensation", who won "New Faces."Sad Sweet Dreamer"reached Number One in the U.K. charts in October 1974.Constantly ripped off by the industry he beacme a shadow of his former self.In 1991Marcel recorded "Reach for Love" for factory Records.Four years after that, he died of a cerebral haemorrhage. His son Zeus was tragically a victim of manchester gangs wars, they rest in peace together in manchester southern cemetery
@jadespics So sad. I have been trying to do some research on Marcel King but the internet is no help....really not a lot about him online. I am curious about the group considering most of them were from the Caribbean. I also heard that Marcel has another son who died pretty recently. Do you know anything about this or his existing family?
this song inspired me to land my first top single pick song called

one of my ALL TIME favorites!! ..this soothing fabulous voice NEVER fails to put the hairs straight up up my back ..... this is music from the HEART !!
wonderful sad song, that i have related with the one and only big love of my life. unrequited even though i tried so hard...it´s just one of those things you put down to experience!
This song was always on the radio when I was a kid. I have a strong memory of me singing it to a packed waiting room in the local doctors' when I was about 3 years old!! Good times, and like @fredericpaulandre says below, innocent times and lovely songs.
Awful. He had a big picture of his son in his living room. Was really proud of him. I still find it shocking that he is dead. A person you could always depend on. My best memory is when he invited me down to the Cafe Bar he was playing in Sale. His talent was completely lost on them, but I felt so proud to be his friend.
Does anyone know what happened to Leroy? I just came on here to see him once again, only to find he has passed on. I lived by him and was a good friend from 82-98. So sad, he was a brilliant keyboard player/singer/ composer/songwriter. A lovely gentleman. Viv Needle.
@AfricanSouthernCross: Every time I think of some brothers breaking into a house somewhere in South Africa and raping Mummy infront of her husband and kids I piss myself. Soooo funny.
@t0mme1981 Yea you can only think of raping since NO one will bend ova for you except your momma.....isn't that the thing that farted you out....a wet fart no doubt....you limeee fuckface....by the way keep on pissing yourself wet each time you hear a knock at the door.....you cum gargling expert.....Man You are one funny fuck up....lol
Man! What a great song! I was a high school senior in '75. How could I not have heard or remember this tune? Anyway, thanks, vanquisamon! One of my new favorite songs, 36 years after it hit the charts!
I was 16 when this was in the charts. Loved this track, but all my mates were into Led Zepp and Deep Purple, so I had to keep it quiet or they would have took turns in beating the crap out of me. :)
@dancinginmyslippers My twin brother was a good friend of his - knew the whole family. Yeah.... the stresses of surviving the music business took Marcel really too soon. Nice memories of very happy times. Thanks for posting Vanquisamon
Oh, my, the memories... I will be 48 soon...I remember thinking of this song every morning while crossing the common on the way to school, (Bishop Chandlers, I think), Birmingham - and again, on the way back from school. I LOVED this song and all the sounds, harps, etc, in the background . I always had an ear for the background sounds...always absorbed all the nounces :>)
@powerofIove I meet all the boys many years ago in harpenden and later on in watford at the top rank what a great night marcel said hello to me while on stage singing what a big head i had that night , i am so sad to hear of marcels early demise, bet he is still singing in heaven, god bless x angie
@powerofIove Your brother was one bad dude - and over here in the States, that means "good." What I want to know is how in the world can 17 people say they "dislike" this beautiful song.
@powerofIove I grew up listening to The Jacksons and The Sylvers and never heard of this group. Your brother had a great voice and equally great stage presence. I'm glad I heard this song.
So true..we all have choices but we have to be strong and put up resistance to all the evil that's going on in the world. Sometimes I watch the news and I see all the suffering and sometimes I wish there is something more I could do, especially when I see young children suffering,it pains my heart so much, most of our suffering stems from choices we make, sometimes it makes you stronger, sometimes it breaks us down....and yes there are selfish people out there who could care less ...
Terrific song from a different day and time. Forget hip-hop: Enjoy this excellent performance of SOUL music, down to every little move. Sorry kids, but things really did used to be better in the 'olden' days. Ah, the memories! :-)
@VALENCIAE65 Thanks for the Correction. But when they were organized here, they were operating out of Britain; yes? And the young boy there, Maurice King, didn't he pass away young from a sudden brain embolism?
@poitrenaud Yes it is really sad and such a beautiful song. I heard folks said Marcel King became an addict...thats so sad, so many lives are messed up because others simply put money and selfishness before not thinking what drugs can do to someone..I mean we all make choices but when promising lives are destroyed it hurts me to the core...
@VALENCIAE65 You have a kind heart. It seems that people as my parents, who lived through WW2 in France, and upheaval and crisis, they somehow didn't allow that to cause them to be alcoholics or nasty nor bitter-
In fact, France NOW is prosperous, and we are full of Ego, Arrogance, Suicide, and Godless-
but one thing destructive people all have in common: they are all about themselves.
That's why I don't cry for stupid self-centered people who live recklessly and leave behind wreckage-
These Jamaican fellas really knew how to sing and dress

My Dad used to go to school with Marcell. Apparently he annoyed the fuck out of everyone, singing all the time. Lol, love the song though.

Sweet memories :>)

Yoiks! The lead singer looks like a miniature Don Cornelius (presenter of the popular music programme "Soul Train")

Too bad.
Sad ending.
poitrenaud 1 year ago
@poitrenaud Yes it is really sad and such a beautiful song. I heard folks said Marcel King became an addict...thats so sad, so many lives are messed up because others simply put money and selfishness before not thinking what drugs can do to someone..I mean we all make choices but when promising lives are destroyed it hurts me to the core...
VALENCIAE65 1 year ago
@VALENCIAE65 You have a kind heart. It seems that people as my parents, who lived through WW2 in France, and upheaval and crisis, they somehow didn't allow that to cause them to be alcoholics or nasty nor bitter-
In fact, France NOW is prosperous, and we are full of Ego, Arrogance, Suicide, and Godless-
but one thing destructive people all have in common: they are all about themselves.
That's why I don't cry for stupid self-centered people who live recklessly and leave behind wreckage-
