At the time this advertisement came out, Apple had a huge technological lead over all other pc's. Remember, Apple's founder came up with the following computer innovations: Using a typewriter keyboard to imput information to a computer, using a monitor, using a hard drive, etc...
That isnt entirely true, the keyboard was used in some mini computers, a monitor was also in mini computers but was also in the computer that played space war in the 1950's, the hard drive was invented in the 1950's by IBM.
5mb storage and weighed a full ton. Apple sold the first home computer with these things. Before that, people used tape recorders for info storage. You don't remember programs stored on punch cards, used up into the 1980s?
Apple didn't predict correctly the future. There is still an alienated mass of people (near 99% of users) that blindly follows the directions of Microsoft PCs.

One of the top 10 commercials of ALL TIME.
Ridley directed this during his career apex (following Alien and Blade Runner). I think this aired ony once. Legendary in commercial circles.

Im not a fan of the 80's movie scare tactics. Terminator like "grim future" scenarios give me a horrible feeling in my chest. I know I am too young to understand that crap like that is cool to you older people but the only reason this commercial is still relevant is because it may have changed advertising during the Super Bowl. Macs are still as irrelevant to the new world as this commercial is.

Mac is doing better than ever, thanks. Those of us who use both know how much better a Mac is than a WinBlows mchine, but go ahead, knock yourself out. As for "grim future" scenarios, they're not about being cool, they are about concern over what is becoming of our planet, culture, etc. Acting like you're too cool to give a crap (or being too ignorant to know what's going on) is REALLY uncool.

Anyone who thinks this isn't brilliant is too young to understand that back in the dark ages we didn't get bombarded by 100,000 ads and such each day. I got chills the first time I saw it and still feel that way and it's been 23 years. AWESOME!

Amazing, beautiful...so ahead of its time. Prob the first ad NOT to show or tell what the product was. (yes i know they say computer in it). It created interest, and anticipation. Remember, this was way before all the crap that saturated tv. If its Stupid to you you're a moron. watch it again and learn something.

This ad is inspired by Orwell's novel "1984." Big Brother is on the huge screen. She throws the hammer to destroy the screen and protest the authoritarian rule over society.

At the time this advertisement came out, Apple had a huge technological lead over all other pc's. Remember, Apple's founder came up with the following computer innovations: Using a typewriter keyboard to imput information to a computer, using a monitor, using a hard drive, etc...

That isnt entirely true, the keyboard was used in some mini computers, a monitor was also in mini computers but was also in the computer that played space war in the 1950's, the hard drive was invented in the 1950's by IBM.

5mb storage and weighed a full ton. Apple sold the first home computer with these things. Before that, people used tape recorders for info storage. You don't remember programs stored on punch cards, used up into the 1980s?

Apple didn't predict correctly the future. There is still an alienated mass of people (near 99% of users) that blindly follows the directions of Microsoft PCs.
Neither Macintosh, nor OS/2, nor Linux, even though the last two ones ran/run on PC architecture have been able to change this situation.
