  • 3:24 is a singer

  • Is there a way to circumvent these types of vocal problems? I used to be a good singer, but now my voice gets tired in minutes and sounds hoarse and feels dry and scratchy. I'd like to be able to sing longer and louder like I used to. Is that possible to achieve, and how?

  • @JumpsuitJamboree The answer lies in what is your particular issue. A good examination of your vocal cords can go a long way to answering your questions.

  • wow cool presentation!

  • @4:12 Choo-Choo train! :O

  • 2:59 , what did that singer do ?

  • can kids get nodes..like teens

  • odd, My Specialist wants me to go into hospital so he can look at the vocal folds with a higher zoom camera. He stated he sees slight redness on the arytenoid and thickening on the lower part of 1 vocal cord.

When i voluntarily close my cords as in stopping air from coming out through the mouth, i get a small pain on 1 side almost like a pimple. No idea what he found but stated doesnt look sinister or cancerous.

  • I bet that's what happened to adele?

  • *never screaming again*

  • OH YESSS I WOULD like a higher resolution of this video. *fapfapfap*

  • Very good content though the singer's voice is way too loud, so I can not hear what the doctor is saying at all.

Better Mix down is definitely needed here.

  • Vagina?

  • i think i saw this exact alien in Halo once...

  • i used to be able to sing really high but i was at a football game about a month ago and i was screaming alot and my throat started to hurt on the drive home. since then i havent been able to sing high at all and i cant get into my false seto like i used to. my friends recomended taking a vocal rest for a few days. will this fix the problem?

  • Hello doc! I love your video, it was very clear! I work with my voice, so I would like to know how to protect my vocal chords, do you know if honey helps? does it act as a protective coating?

  • the least i could do is to quit smoking right now!!!

  • i can't hear him well most of the time!!

  • real cool upload, man

  • How do I know I have them? And how do I prevent, or get rid of vocal nodules?

  • Gosh, the one at 4:12 sounds like a choo-choo train.

  • I have a question.

I am becoming increasingly worried as being a singer all my adult life, six weeks ago I went to sing and nothing in the medium range came out at all, medium to high even falsetto is not there at all, my throat is slightly sore after trying but there is no sound only lower notes and even the high end of lower has forced vibrato not natural.

I am having an endoscopy to look at my vocal cords in two weeks time but fear its more serious, is it possible this could be nodules?

  • ugh gross. ive had nodules several times in my adult life, i used to not even know what they were, just that my singing voice would go away for several months, and then reappear all of the sudden. now i know when that happens its likely nodules. i've quit smoking and worked on elminating my(mild) symptoms of GERD hopefully my throat will heal for good this time.

  • So... Vibrato is not from the larynx?

  • Oh weird! I had these once and lost my voice for a month. Never knew what they looked like, though. I was told if they removed them my voice might change so I never did anything about it.

  • Iam a very good singer I posted vids on my channel and I have vocal nodules but I can sing very well cause I have been resting my voice.

  • i have a question. for a professional death metal vocalist like glen benton or chris barnes, someone who has been doing vocals for years and years, would these be an issue? can you get these by doing false chord technique vocals?

  • @yeoldecouchpotato For vocalists such as the ones you mentioned, it should be an even greater worry, as they are putting their focal cords through much more strenuous activity and abuse.

  • This is a very good video. I was concerned that I had nodules but after 3 scopes both doctors felt I didn't. I still have this inordinate about of mucous in my throat and I am constantly clearing my throat. Maybe it is because I live in a very dry environment as I never had throat clearing problems when I lived by the beach.

  • I'm the only one that think that sometimes it looks like a vagina?

  • @skyfera yes. LOL i do too.

  • Why do they always use female vocalists in these vids??!

  • oh okay

  • I'm never speaking again...

  • @JimmehhBoyy HAHAHAHA!!!

  • 4:05 lol

  • This is the scariest thing I've ever seen!

  • i have nodules on my vocal chords. i need to clear my throat all the time

  • I have tons of issues with my vocal cords ever since I was a small child. I would get strep infections all of the time, and then my doctor had my tonsils removed. Well after that was done we thought my voice would lose it's hoarse sound. Well to this day it still hasn't. So now I need to go back and see if I have nodules on my vocal cords.

  • what causes nodules and how can you tell if you have them?

  • omG!!!!!!! please deliver us from that!!!! i wanna sing till i die!!!!

  • Just curious, how can you tell when you are at the early stages of developing vocal problems and nodules? I understand that after an amount of time you develop obvious hoarseness whenever you speak.

  • u all suk @ singing

  • Ok, ill say it.. vocal chords look like a gash.

  • im a mariachi vocalist and wow i had no idea that vocal chords even looked like that! that is crazy and i have to belt alot when we have gigs so i hope i dont damage my vocal chords :(

  • This is what happened to Julie Andrews... :(

  • Is it bad if the capillary goes across the vocal chord?

  • Thank you, Doctor; this is a very informative and interesting video! I used to sing professionally, but stopped several years ago, partly because I wanted to concentrate more on the cello, and partly because I've been taking inhaled corticosteroids for asthma for a few years, which as you know affects the voice. It is so interesting to see what is going on in sound production, and how vocal nodules affect the production. Luckily, the vibration of my cello's strings hasn't been affected yet. :-)

  • Agh my throat feels weird now

  • Yikes. I think I have this.

  • good presentation, but i cant use it for my students :( your voice is too monotomous and they will get bored

  • i cnt watch this..it makes me hmm kinda bit sick...?

  • Its good to know lol @JansenGreysonFan

  • @fallenstarkevin ahehehehe hmmm yeah its great to know..but uhhh i cnt really watch it :D coz of tht larynx part of the vocal chords blah..LOL

  • what a great video!!! thanks

  • Please help!! I'm a male, and I'm not always able to sing in my falsetto... WHY?! One day my falsetto is beautiful, and the next it's not even there! Right now I'm sick. And I also have yelled a lot because I have temper problems... But this was recently... And I don't have a vocal coach... I just need to know why I can sometimes sing in falsetto and sometimes I can't!! :'( Help me!!

  • Well, that's why you have guys like him in the world, and you have guys like me.. Dudes like me would probably pass out looking into a person's vocal cords like that.. lol However, his job is very important.. God bless these professionals..

  • Shit…gross

  • Very good presentation and discussion.

  • very nice video thanks!

  • all i want from searching in youtube about "high voice" is making my voice louder!

  • i have small nodules and im concerned... will my voice ever go back to what it used to be? Because i used to be able to sing very high but now i can barely hit notes that are easily in my range.

  • @disney2teri nodules are like callouses and change over time. They react and get larger with overuse (a lot of talking and loud talking). They go down in size with decreased use (less talking and less volume).

  • @docvox Recently, I've been trying to learn how to do screamo; you might've heard about it, but in case you haven't it's a type of singing where you pretty much force your singing voice into a scream. I know it can do damage to your vocal cords, but what kind of damage, and how serious would it be? And supposedly there is a right way to do it where it wouldn't harm you vocal chords at all, what is your opinion on this? Just curious because I really don't want to ruin my voice...

  • @ilovechickenbaby

    pretty much, there isnt.

Heard of IRON Maiden? the main pretty much has stuffed his vocal folds, and now he sounds crap live and recorded.

Plus imagine how many nodgels you can get by constant yelling. They bang agianst eachother when you yell, imagine how much damage they would get from banging up agiasnt eachother that hard for a period of time...

And you shouldnt force your voice to do anything, you havent warmed it up to doing. You can do some serious damage!!

  • @disney2teri Does this thing hurt?

  • @lifesaver173 I'm a singer, so when I had a long singing session, they did. See how I said "they". They're actually gone!

  • @lifesaver173 sorry, i meant "they did" ....meaning past tense. :P

  • @disney2teri Sounds like you got a big mouth and talk to much. Lol!

  • @disney2teri Yes you can. Singers like Mariah Carey has vocal modules since young, yet she can hit many high notes, despite her nodules problem getting worse over the years due to overuse of her voice. You need to consult a voice doctor and vocal coach.

  • Lmao at 4:05!! xD

  • Informative but... no matter how many vocal chords I saw, it never stopped being creepy. And watching 0:55 made me think of Alien.

  • I don't know if I should be amazed or throw up... or both.

  • This vid has scarred me :(

  • 1:56 looks like a dinosaur eye

  • I was told in December I was put on antibiotics for this cold my doctor thought I had. She was very wrong! I wanted to hit the 5th octave and was nearly there and now my singing career is on hold. I can't be Mariah Carey, but background vocals is a lucrative business. I wish I knew this information a while ago. My ENT doctor found the nodule and now I see a speach pathologist. Thanks for the great video. Now I know what's wrong.

  • great video.i am a vocal coach and i think it was perfect .thank you

  • Thanks for your clear video and explanation!

  • iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • @BlowBackBenny

You should go see an ENT to get a laryngoscopy to see why your range has been affected by your illness. I am currently battling a sinus and upper respiratory infection, and I have developed laryngitis because of irritation and nasal drip into my throat. I cannot phonate anything in my range, but I can speak (with hoarseness). It turns out my arytenoids are extremely swollen and sore, but my vocal cords themselves are fine.

  • thanks a lot, cause in Spain wants to surgery and surgery. I`m resting my voice for 15 days. And no surgery, desde luego.

  • 0:05 its looks like a porno

  • looks like a regina :3

  • Can you get a nodule from a throat infection?

I recently has a serious cough, and I'm worried it has done permanent damage to my voice, my range has dropped considerably and there is an airy gap where my mix used to be.

  • i am totally freaking out now

  • i have nodules :(

  • could u feel a lump in your thorat like right under the flap thing he showed that starts with a e it feels like its about 2-4 inchs under it could thay b a cause of this

  • I'm getting a diplophonia sound, but when I went to an ENT I couldn't reproduce and he didn't see any nodules. He said only that I had swollen vocal cords. The multiple tones do abate when I warm up my head voice and gets better as I go along and almost disappears, only to happen again the next morning.

  • I'm getting a diplophonia sound, but when I went to an ENT I couldn't reproduce and he didn't see any nodules. He said only that I had swollen vocal cords. I am 61. Is it likely I can make that condition go away?

  • i wish my problem were as simple as vocal nodules, i have an interarytenoid/arytenoid edema that doesn't go away with anything,i've been hoarse for 3 months.

  • OMG! is so interesting, that video catch all my attention but does the nodules have a peculiar sound? how you can eliminate? thax's for the video a lot of edecution to many people like me that doesn´t know that

  • it looks really wrong!!! LMFAO!!!

  • thank you

  • I guess it makes sense that someone in Laryngology would have a somewhat calm voice. For some reason it made me laugh, though.

Very illuminating video. I'm in a band and I think I've screwed my voice up. The thing is, it was working fine while we were gigging, but after I took a month off (no singing at all), I can barely make a noise.

  • Thanks so much, it is really hard to understand the mechanisms of voice without good videos such as this.

  • how long does it take for your nodules to go away if you rest??

  • Doctor, I had my cords examined by an ENT but I couldn't get the awful sound in his office that I have had for several years. ( It's like the dipliphonia you mention in the video, two or more sounds at the same time.) He said I had no nodules but thickening, probably due to age. Is it possible he missed the nodules because I couldn't reproduce the sound?

  • It kinda looks like the Eye of Sauron. Who else thinks that?

  • i've seen this video yesterday in singing class and i had to say, youtube really takes a huge part in learning and at the same time cringing us

  • This had to have been the most disgusting 6:42 minutes of my life.

  • @SoulinEther YOU haven't seen a heart surgery!

  • Is it really possible to engage your false chords? I do metal vocals (screamed/harsh whatever) and I've learned to do it properly and afterwards nothing hurts and my regular voice sounds exactly the same as for many other professional vocalists

  • what does it mean if one side of my throat is swollen??? i think i might have a nodule, i just dont know if i do or not

  • i had that tube up my nose to see my throat and its disgusting and really shook me. whats worse is i have to have it done again in a couple of weeks because they found nodules but im not a singer. i am a single mum and it must be toon much shouting at the kids who dont listen. ive had it for some time, but why does it come and go and im not hoarse all the time? i thought it was better. why do they want a second look?

  • could you do a check up on me .. pls ?

  • My voice seems to feel permanently sore! But no breaks in register

Dear Doc, i am a singer who had to do a series of intense gigs last christmas just after a chest infection that almost made me lose my voice. I then caught another cough; ended up coughing alot. since then my voice seems to be permanently sore (that was almost 7 momths ago!) it improved for a while and the sore/scratych feeling seemed to go. but now i have the same feeling. I went to see a local ENT but with no avail! :-(

  • Will the damage you talked about here correct itself? I need to know because I am in a band.

  • Thanks! :)

  • just because sound is coming out of a spot doesn't mean theres a nodules stopping the sound though. maybe the muscles in that area are just weak and need strengthening. for awhile there were "airy" spots when i would phonate higher. until i found out how to close the vocal cords and eventually found my mixed voice. you can sing/speak as much as you like. done improperly and or louder than you're used to without proper support and warmup can lead to nodules though.

  • What do vocal cords look like if a person has vocal cord dysfunction?

  • can vocal nodules only affect falsetto?

  • Sir if u cud plz tell what the ventricle of morgagni is?where is it and what does it look like?

  • @musicalsgal2007 Every few minutes for 3 to 6 days. Oh I hope things work out for you!

  • @musicalsgal2007 My cough was rough and violent. I had a horrid sore throat and my voice WAS cutting in and out. I'm sooooooooooo sorry that this is happening to you. I DO have good news however. Since this post, I've done 2 musicals and was nominated for one of my performances. So my voice is coming back, it's not what it used to be... but it's coming back. Best of luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

  • Dear docvox,

Yesterday an ENT specialist at a University Hospital examined my vocal cords by putting device through my nose.

He said my larynx was normal and that there are no vocal nodules. I am baffled as my voice has been feeling weak and I have completely lost my falsetto voice for several years now.

I do not understand how my lrynx can be normal and free of swelling, when I have impirment in my vocal range. I am a 20 year old male. Please could you shed some light on this.

  • Please traduction to spanish!!!!!!!!!! please please plaase!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you Dr. Singing is my LIFELINE, and I was diagnosed with nodules 5 years ago and didn't complete speech therapy. I'm sure they've been present for over 8 years. I do a lot of belting, but in the last 6 moths seem to have lost range in all registers.. Do I still have a chance to minimise them with vocal rest and training? I'm trying to drink a lot of room temp. water and steam. Please respond. Thanks.

  • it seems to me that i might have the same problem,i even could not sing in high notes and i speaks with a little souffles :(

  • LOL IT LOOKS LIKE A VAGINA

  • @XxBYAMikeyBYAxX Yes you are right, that's why they are called vocal lips and vaginal lips, the shape is almost the same

  • Very useful information. This video should be required viewing in any vocal performance college program.

  • Very useful information. This video should be required viewing in any vocal performance college program.

  • I just got diagnosed with nodules. It's been 6 months already. It's really tough having to sit mute if I want to go out and end up in a noisy pub. Right now I just want my speaking voice back, I would could my singing as a plus. Bah.

  • this was awesome mate, i think i will double check that everything is ok with my throat cuz im pretty sure ive been using the right technique as ive been trained for approx 7 years now, but just incase, as im singing everyday - i need to make sure, right? who should i make an appointment with for a general checkup? As in a laryngoscopy or is a normal GP good enough?

  • For all those interested in what you should do if you get nodes, it's always been my voice teacher's recommendation, to NOT get surgery, but to go on COMPLETE vocal rest until they heal. Surgery, even with lasers, will leave scar tissue on the vocal folds changing the sound and range of your voice. Let them heal, then go to a speech pathologist/therapist and a voice teacher for speech and singing therapy. Learning how to properly use your voice can prevent this.

  • @SilverCreedWolf thanks this makes so much sense!

  • thanks for the video.

as a singers How can you protect your coard of getting this..can you give us some tips?

  • don't sing hours on end without proper warm up and warm down, use proper singing technique example would be no constricting of the throat when singing and don't strain to hit a note these are not for sure but i follow them and my voice is ok right now

  • This is the coolest video I've seen since - ever!

  • hey im a male tenor, and about two days ago when i woke up i coulnt speak, almost at all. I tried doing some scales to see if it was just mucus, then i was able to sing(with some pushing) for the rest of the day. But every morning since then ive seem to get more hoarse when i wake up. but as the day goes on it slowly comes back, besides my head voice. what do i do?

  • @yojunkzfaded Sounds like damage may be developing;Rest your voice!

I recently got checked out and turns out that I have two small nodules, and some acid reflux, which affects my cords by swelling around my epiglottis ( 1:35 ).

Somethings to try (drawn from personal experience and symtom relation):

Try using your voice for only 15 mins per day or less over 10 days

ProTip: sleep on an incline (head at a higher elevation than your stomache) for 10 days. Don't eat within 2 hrs of sleep.

  • are nodules permenant? I was really sick for a week and caughed up alot, i eventually lost my voice, i rested, i try to go back to singing did some bubbles or lip trills on the piano I didnt push til i had strain in the neck i rested and i stopped--my voice is naturally a lil deeper than other females-i was getting a croaky speaking voice now its a lil better but i when i try to make a deep sound i get a breath maybe im still a little congested but i feel fine

  • i dont feel sick anymore, but i did notice its a lil hard to breathe outta one nostril--im really scared though its just werid

  • Im not sick anymore but i did notice its still a lil hard to breathe outta one nostril but no congestion--iits been about two weeks since my sickness was over, im really scared please help

  • Nodules are like callouses. They come from overuse, so if one stops overusing the voice, they will eventually go away. Nodules have nothing to do with colds or illnesses however. Any swelling on the vocal cords will impair vibration whether from a cold, from overuse or from a growth.

  • I feel a little pain/discomfort on one side of my neck, and I cant talk for long, I went on a piano scale and I can do everything without a break but my falsetto is a breathy--I stopped talking as much as possible the past few days- how do I distingush this from paralysis, and wether it will be permanent or not

  • @docvox how long does it take for your vocal nodules to go away with proper rest??

  • @docvox I am a Tenor singer usually singing Michael jackson songs and I use my middle to head voice usually.Recently I tried to Produce extreme High Pitches And As you explained its because that nodules Touch to produce The jump in pitch, But after I tried to practise the high pitch for two days I lost my ability to sing in Middle to head voice. When I reach the head voice I cannot control that pitch and I slip to this whistle or extreme high pitch.I am totally disappointed, I beg your Help

  • 0:54

  • wow I feel real bad for mariah carey...

  • n umm i know this is a crappy question but how much are we looking at when it comes to lasers and does any health insuranc or any other service cover voice?

  • without insurance they are about 18g-20g

but most insurances will cover the surgery i think

  • Is that how Mariah Carey hits that whistle note?

  • No, she uses an actual registration called "whistle." The vocal folds hold together only allowing a small opening to let the air "whistle" through.

  • thats what Miley Cyrus was getting

  • I'm pretty sure I have vocal nodes. I can feel them when I swallow. I push harder to get my notes, and it feels different...

  • great .. now i'm totally stressing .... :((

  • yea me too since my voice behaves just like these damaged voices in this video and my insurance doesnt allow me t see an ENT to have my cords checked out

  • me too! So wait, its bad if you have to clear your throat alot? becuase I do, so do I have those bumps? and what happens if oyu do, are you screwed?

  • don't clear your throat - it's bad for the chords. Keep it to a minimum.

  • I feel the need to clear my throat often, is it a vocal thickening or just a bad habit?

  • ur not screwed if u catch them soon enough but if u dont get rid of them they can cause damage. they get removed by lasers and then u have to be completely silent for 6-8 weeks. we did this in our lecture on vocals afew weeks ago (cause im a music student) and the lecturer now has all the voice students scared stiff lol

  • wow, poor mariah, do u think she can still be saved now =((, and completely silent for 6-8 weeks, that must be really irritating :-s

  • her vocals today or on point her concert recently is stellar, shes been getting a lot of rest!

  • Comment removed

  • @klassworksmusic ugh me too I don't wanna scream anymore D:

  • this is scary

  • people...please please please please please please please,,,help me and give me some advice,5 months ago i woke up with a different voice i cant sing, reach notes and it hurts to speak somtimes and my voice is weak, the doctors aint taking me serious..its depressing me,,,any advice please please

  • Hi! I'll suggest for you to have your doctor perform endoscopy it'll help a lot. Do you know that I'd just visited my ENT doctor earlier? and I was diagbosed with vocal cord nodules! you know music is a part of me and when the doctor told me that I have vocal nodes, everything just fell off!

We have the same situation when I woke up my voice is so different like I can't hit high notes as before. Right now i'm in vocal rest and steroids. god bless us!

  • LOL!!

  • I am a male singer, tenor, but sometimes i can barley hit a G 4 quite well, sometimes i just can't. I've been singing for about 2 weeks trying to increase my range due to songs i need to record that constantly hit A, G, F and notes in between, but i noticed that sometimes i feel pain and cant keep going, and my voice cracks like mariah carey's voice... with little whistles in between, i got also a whistle register that didn't have before... could this be cocal nodules?

  • Спасибо!Очень познавательное видео!

  • Can singing whispering or too low volume damage the vocal cords? Thanx.

  • sometimes it can if you do not know how to manage your vocal cords properly....if you ever feel like doing this is stressful to your cords then DON'T DO IT.....thats the biggest thing to keeping things healthy, it is very easy to damage your cords by singing too high or screaming often....if it hurts DON'T DO IT.....other than that whispering shouldn't hurt your voice

  • Since whispering and singing quietly puts very little stress on the vocal chords (unless you're singing very quietly), that kind of thing will not hurt your vocal chords unless they are already damaged.

  • no..bcoz it does not strain yur vocal chords

  • really interesting

  • I have voice problem for almost 7 months. It aches when i speak, it happened bcoz i sang so loud for 2 weeks. I still feel pain in my troat when i talk. I have visited 7 doctors in kabul none could help me. Can anyone tell me what to do? And what to eat and what not to eat. I believe this is one of the major things causing my voice not to recover. please help me. I will be very thankful. Fawad from Kabul

  • Try this first. Go on vocal rest. Do not sing, do not shout, do not speak for about five days. See if that helps. If not, continue vocal rest for a few weeks. But I am serious - no talking, no phonation at all. Often times vocal rest alone takes care of the problem.

  • When I was on a vocal rest, so called "experts" told me oh vocal rest means no singing, you can talk. I told them; yeah if you talk nonstop that's going to rest your voice perfectly. You are right my friend. Singing is elongated speech delivered over a series of notes

  • This could be one of three problems: 1. That you sang too loud and severly damaged your vocal cords (thats the worst case senario) 2.
