In a colder way, suicide is one of the ways biology regulates the human population through competition of mates, friendship, and company. Though lack of human companionship is a driving factor, I'm fairly certain there are people who have their personal reasons.
I can relate. I lost my Mama to suicide in 2004 because she was in pain 24/7, in a wheelchair from rheumatoid arthritis. I guess she couldn't take it anymore. She had been depressed (she wouldn't get help even though I would keep asking her) since I was 8 & I had expected it in my teens and 20's then it happens 20 yrs. later unexpectedly. Then 13 mos. later, my 39 y/o brother who had been a drug addict for 21 yrs. OD'd.
There are days when I don't think it is...but for me, (and I can only speak for me), I know that life has the potential to get better, the potential to be wonderful. And it's that hope and belief in the fact that I control my own destiny that keeps me going even when things seem impossible. There are still good things in this world, good people...you just have to make the effort to find them. :)
yeah for sure i tried like 2 months ago to commit suicide by taking pills then i caused a lot of damage to my liver and then wen i was in hospital i met a great bunch of nurses who made me see how great life can be since then ive had ups and downs but ive being better

A girl that was my best friend when we were in elementary school killed herself in high school. By then we had grown apart and hung out with different people. I knew that there was something different about her, but I never thought it would come to that.
It was so sad. At her funeral I lost it completely. I really wish people would think about all of the people around them that will be affected by their actions.
Im only 16, i used to be suicidal at age 14, and I think about my dog peanut all the time, shes the one who prevented me from killing myself. If I die, she dies, its just that simple. Then later on, i realized how many dogs need me, and how great of a potential I have to save there life's that I decided to stay. God put me on earth for a reason, I found it and my goal is to impress him. =]
Also A HUGE thanks to James, my current boyfriend, who can pull me out of the deepest mess! =]
That is SO wonderful! I'm so glad you found your calling. It's really all any of us need, just one reason to be here. One person, or animal who means something to us, or who counts on us. I'm so glad you realized how important you are!! :)
Jill, this video hit me hard. I can't even speak. I'm just sitting here, not making a sound, and the tears are flowing down my face. Very, very touching. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you...I'm so glad I was able to get this out there because it means SO much to me. I just want people to pay attention...get to know their kids, their friends, the people around them, and hopefully make a difference in someone's life. :)
I mean, even in our own lifetimes we look back and think about how different we saw the world and the people we knew. I have friends that I once that could do no wrong, and sometimes now I wonder how they could do the things they do... I can think of how math was hard or history pointless, and now math is simple and natural, and history is priceless... in a single century humans have created a world of things once thought impossible, and tomorrow... we'll do it again...
Girl I know people will pay attention,I forward the video to 5 of my closest friends and I know They will forward to others. Thanks and Iam looking forward to see more of Your videos.God Bless you!
I don't think there's any stopping anyone who is absolutely sure...but anyone who's still asking this question has doubts... and to me that means there's still hope there. I don't care what anyone says, life IS worth the fight and life DOES get better. It changes all the time.
Depression isn't an illness. It's a state of being, a state of mind. Most people just stay busy, they are always doing something, not giving themselves time to think, but if you think about the world we live in, there is no reason to be happy. Wanting to understand it, wanting a purpose, and wanting to be happy in spite of all around is what has made religion and faith last so long. If there is nothing else, it's all pretty pointless isn't it?
On one level I can agree with this, I do think people spend too much time searching for happiness and purpose insteading enjoying the journey and little things that make life worth living. However, I've worked in the medical field for 11 years and have seen what clinical depression looks like...and what the right treatments can do to turn it around. Depression, like any mental illness, is genetic and is linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain. It's not theory...it's a fact.
Well, I don't want to say, "Hey, you're wrong!"... and not because you aren't, just because it's kind of rude... there is no such thing as fact, there is what you believe and there's why you believe it... The closest thing to fact in the real world is simply the majority of people in one place at one time believe the same thing for the same reason... at one time, in one place, that the earth was flat and the center of the universe was fact... and now? just think about it... ;)
No such thing as fact? Using your example, is it not a fact that the earth has now been proven to be round or is that just the common belief of the moment? Curious how you can refute certain proven scientific fact. Not trying to be rude at all, just curious about your opinion. :)
It's not a fact, it's just what most people believe now... and let's be honest, what for? The say so of a handful of self proclaimed experts? In the days of CGI and photoshop, pictures and video? Everything in this world, and I do mean EVERYTHING, is a simple matter of perspective. To me "facts" and any "black and white" mentality is close minded and ignorant... but... that's just an individuals perspective, isn't it?
Well then you should know that you are going to die...we are all gonna die..why be in a rush.. I gurantee things will get better and even if they dont get better your mind has a way to change things because it knows you want to be happy again..Just stick it out see what life has to offer..
Ive felt like killing my self on many many occasions when I wasnt depressed at all..im not trying to refute your video or argue by the way either..Im just makeing an unrelated comment .. ignore me
It's quite alright...I'm sure there are many reasons other than depression that cause suicidal thoughts, I just wanted to cover the biggest causes in this vid. In my brother for instance, we have no idea what pushed him to commit suicide really. One of those rare cases where there was just no warning signs, even in retrospect.
Girl I have watch 2 of your videos today so far. I've been touch by both,You have such a talent on bringing this Issues on video.I wish there were more people like You that really care about others.Thank You so much.
Thank you soooo much. I just want to bring the issues I care about to a format where they can be discussed, and even argued...at least it means someone is paying attention.
I have depression. I have been diagnosed for 2 years, tried to commit suicide buuut i'm still here. Not sure where that is taking me now.
I'm really sorry about your brother, and you of course. Depression is nothing easy, and never treatable with a pill or matter of days. Keep on trying, though.
It's a difficult topic. In the end -not incalcultating the possibilties of next-life, or afterlife - the people left behind suffer most from suicide. More than those committing. The difficult part for me is accepting that for some suicide is just the only option left, and still respect them for who they are, despite that choice.
Victor E. Frankl wrote in his famous book that 'Suffering is like a gass in a room: It always fills a room completely, no matter how big it is'.
It's impossible to measure suffering, to compare lives and say whose are more horrible. Some lives are forever destroyed by one little thing, others suffer entire lists of grave endurances, and still are happy and make the best of every day. Who can tell how bad 'bad' realy is?
Depression and suicide has NOTHING at all to do with the objective reality of how horrible or not horrible your life is..its a state if mind..when loseing your keys seems as bad as the death of a friend..you cant just a throw a label on it and bitch at depressed people because they, in your mind have had easy lifes..No disrespect just dont like people who dont fully understanmd depression, depression isnt being sad or down..its being depressed even in your best days you feel like shit.
i have thoughts on suicide before, cuz of my low self esteem, also i used to cut myself, becasue i felt no one cared foe me:'( but by watching this video it made me change my mind.
I have a sister who used to be a cutter, so I know how hard that is. I just really believe that there's always a better way out than death...there's always something better out there for us if we're willing to go and look for it ya know?
Thank you for this video and for speaking up about your brother. My family has also been touched by the tragedy of suicide.
I lost my brother July 7th, 2004, at the age of 23, 1 month before his birthday.
I always keep him in my heart and I hope he is happy, wherever he is. Because he was not happy here, and he deserves to be happy. I only wish he didn't feel the only way to happiness was to end his life. This video made me cry, made me remember, and by remembering him it made me smile.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. Suicide has effected so many families. I just want to make people more aware of how common it is and that it can happen to any family. I'm so sorry for your loss, I hope both you and your brother find happiness and peace. :)
The unfortunate thing about our society today is that these signs go undetected because we aren't able to spend enough time with our children due to jobs and such. I make an effort to watch changes in my daughters behavior because I know what I went through as a child that was overlooked due to the stresses of everyday life. Very touching video Jilly you always do such a fantastic job!
It is hard, and I don't think we'll ever know everything that's going on in our childrens' lives. We'd be naive to think so...my parents were certainly clueless, but we've got to at least try, like you're doing and like I try so hard to do. Thanks. :)
You are in the world of YouTube now, you will never be lonely and as long as you're nice to people they will be nice to you! You're never truely alone it's just finding what and whom fits you and your personality. If your friend ditched you like that they were the one who was "uncool" NOT you! And if you want to spend time with your parents, tell them!
Thank you for your new video! For some reason, our society fails to recognize the depth of love we feel for our loved ones and the consequent grief felt at their passing. Your video will offer comfort and support to the countless individuals who will experience the loss of life of a loved one and to promote the exchange of ideas and wisdom on how to perhaps prevent it from happening.
Thank you. That's one of my favorite things about YouTube...the sharing of ideas and knowledge, to hopefully help each other out. Sometimes through laughter, sometimes information, sometimes just knowing someone out here cares. :)
Thank you. I'm so proud that you are my daughter. You are the most amazing woman. So compassionate, understanding, intelligent, and talented. I'm so very thankful that you are finally in my life.
You have no idea how grateful I am to have found you...you've completed such a huge part of me. It means so much to know where I come from and to know someone so much like me. Most of all to have someone love me and accept me the way I am, the kind of unconditional love I've looked for all my life. Thank YOU. I miss you too. :)
Wonderful video, very artfully done. I've been in that head-space a few times myself. It is deep, complex, and very powerful. I think it made me more empathetic, tolerant, compassionate, and understanding.
Bless you for making this video. Being informed and raising awareness is powerful. Someone watching this will fine hope through what you have done. That can make all of the difference in the world ...
Thank you...I hope you're right, I do think most of the time it's the simple things that make all the difference. Knowing someone cares, even a stranger...hopefully it helps. Thanks so much for watchin'. :)
an amazing video, its great to see someone like you out there trying to make a difference.
we've all been there once in our life, we have all felt "maybe it would be better off if we were dead", feeling nothing but self grief, but thats were friends come in, or videos like this. they help you see your self from a different perspective, help you see what your doing is wrong. i just want to say what your doing is.... amazing, your one of the few people how care :) thanks
Thank you so much...I think if people just talk about it, just open up a little, it would make a world of difference. Whether you talk to a friend or an internet stranger, getting your feelings heard is important. Feeling like someone cares is all most of us really want. Thanks so much for supporting this. :)
My sister-in-law committed suicide when she was 24. I was very close to her. I did not know the warning signs. They were there. I know them now. A little too late. Thank you for making this video. Thank you for getting the message out!
It's amazing to me how many people have been touched by a suicide in their lives...we don't know because we still just don't talk about it. There's still a stigma attached to it that shouldn't be there. People are still afraid to talk about it, ashamed maybe, and we shouldn't be. Thanks for your support!
jill -- You have created another amazing piece of art. I've suffered from depression my whole life. I'm lucky that I've found the right combination of medication that seems to help me most days. (yes, there are still "those" days.) I've favorited this and will pass it along to those who will be helped by it. You have an amazing talent.
Your brother - I'm so sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace.
Luckily, I've found the right medication for myself too, but it's not always easy, we've been trying for 5 years to find the right medications for my daughter and still haven't got there yet. But we won't give up...and we won't ignore the fact that there's a problem. :) Thank you!
Awesome video Jilly. Depression is a silent, suffocating fog. We have lost a young family member also. Why did we miss the signs? So sorry for you loss as well. hugs, Chris
It's so easy to miss the signs I think because there's such a fine line between normal teenage sulking and true depression. My brother's death was a total shock to everyone...sometimes you just don't see it coming. All you can do is try your best to stay involved I think.
Great job, Jilly! I, too, have battled depression throughout my life, & have actually found myself sitting in the bathroom with a razor blade in my hand. What stopped me was knowing what it would do to the people who loved me.Guess I wasn't as desperate as some. They say that a lot of suicide attempts are cries for help.Sadly, I think a lot of successful suicides were cries for help that went wrong.I'm so sorry about your brother.
I agree with you...we think that's probably what happened with my brother. He was trying to get attention and just took it too far. I couldn't do it to the people around me either, but I really can understand how people can get to that point. And sadly I think it's still taboo to admit to being that depressed or having a child who's that depressed. My parents were willfully ignorant. I've promised myself I'll never do that to my kids. I tell them they never have to be ashamed of what they feel.
All the stereotypes associated with depression and suicide now do need to be faced and this is a great way to get the word out there. The scary thing is, the statistics for attempted suicide would be nowhere near the true figure. Anyway, thankyou.
I agree with you, there are probably thousands and thousands of attempts that go unreported, particularly the overdoses. Even my brother's suicide was technically ruled an accidental death on the final report. There are probably a lot of cases ruled accidental that were meant as suicides. The stats are probably low. Thanks for watchin'!
One thing I would add is to watch them very very closely when they initially go onto anti-depressants. Unfortunately, it seems like one of the first things that anti-depressants relieve is the fear/anxiety of committing suicide. Personally, that only seemed to last for a few days and doesn't return even if I'm off of them for a couple years and start them again. I remember thinking "Oh, that's why I hear of suicides on these things". Luckily, I've never been suicidal.
You're right...my brother was on a new set of meds when he died, we'll never really know if that had an impact or not. Seven years ago you didn't really hear about that so much, it wasn't an issue...now we hear of all the studies showing the link between anti-depressants and suicide in teens. You're right, you just have to watch them very carefully. I still think the meds and treatment are worth the risk overall. Thank so much for watching and supporting.
The most depressed I ever felt was when my psychitrist had me on so many pills...I was being treated for everything adhd, anxiety, depression, mood swings, bi polar..it fucked with my head so much..when they finally took me off them all the depression faded away, and ive learned how to deal with my issues alone..havent taken a pill since i was 16
I don't think there is one clear answer that will suit every situation or every person. Not everyone needs pills, but I certainly think there are plently of people out there that are being helped by medication. Medication is a tricky thing...it's all about finding the right medication or the right combination of meds for that individiual. There's so much trial and error that unfortunately most people probably do get worse before they ever get better.
Some people say that people "try" to commit suicide just to get attention, but if someone is willing to do that for attention he is in trouble and we should help him.
Thanks Ran...you're absolutely right, I think if someone gets to that point in their lives where they feel like that's the only way someone will pay attention and take them seriously, it's already gone beyond what most of us can do to help and they need professional help. The key is to pay attention and help before it gets to that point I think.

Depression and suicide has NOTHING at all to do with the objective reality of how horrible or not horrible your life is..its a state if mind..when loseing your keys seems as bad as the death of a friend..you cant just a throw a label on it and bitch at depressed people because they, in your mind have had easy lifes..No disrespect just dont like people who dont fully understanmd depression, depression isnt being sad or down..its being depressed even in your best days you feel like shit.

i have thoughts on suicide before, cuz of my low self esteem, also i used to cut myself, becasue i felt no one cared foe me:'( but by watching this video it made me change my mind.
iceprincesskrystal 3 years ago
I have a sister who used to be a cutter, so I know how hard that is. I just really believe that there's always a better way out than death...there's always something better out there for us if we're willing to go and look for it ya know?

Are you serious 10-14? wow this video touched me, I've felt depression before but I never considered suicide...but I thought about it.
Di110nD4z3r 3 years ago
Sad isn't it? My brother was only 12, so it happens. I've never considered it an option either, but I can understand how people get to that point.
jillymsane 3 years ago

SuzyQ6930 3 years ago
It is hard, and I don't think we'll ever know everything that's going on in our childrens' lives. We'd be naive to think so...my parents were certainly clueless, but we've got to at least try, like you're doing and like I try so hard to do. Thanks. :)

My mom and dad are divorced. They never spend time with me.My only friend does not like me anymore because im "uncool".The only one I have is my dog.
metalbulblax 3 years ago
You are in the world of YouTube now, you will never be lonely and as long as you're nice to people they will be nice to you! You're never truely alone it's just finding what and whom fits you and your personality. If your friend ditched you like that they were the one who was "uncool" NOT you! And if you want to spend time with your parents, tell them!
SuzyQ6930 3 years ago

hey
once again,
an amazing video, its great to see someone like you out there trying to make a difference.
we've all been there once in our life, we have all felt "maybe it would be better off if we were dead", feeling nothing but self grief, but thats were friends come in, or videos like this. they help you see your self from a different perspective, help you see what your doing is wrong. i just want to say what your doing is.... amazing, your one of the few people how care :) thanks
02lthomam 3 years ago 2

So sorry for you loss as well. hugs, Chris
bugsinrug 3 years ago 2
It's so easy to miss the signs I think because there's such a fine line between normal teenage sulking and true depression. My brother's death was a total shock to everyone...sometimes you just don't see it coming. All you can do is try your best to stay involved I think.
jillymsane 3 years ago
Great job, Jilly! I, too, have battled depression throughout my life, & have actually found myself sitting in the bathroom with a razor blade in my hand. What stopped me was knowing what it would do to the people who loved me.Guess I wasn't as desperate as some. They say that a lot of suicide attempts are cries for help.Sadly, I think a lot of successful suicides were cries for help that went wrong.I'm so sorry about your brother.

This is video is one good thing that came from his passing. I'm sure it will help a lot of people.
Illuminatta 3 years ago
I agree with you...we think that's probably what happened with my brother. He was trying to get attention and just took it too far. I couldn't do it to the people around me either, but I really can understand how people can get to that point. And sadly I think it's still taboo to admit to being that depressed or having a child who's that depressed. My parents were willfully ignorant. I've promised myself I'll never do that to my kids. I tell them they never have to be ashamed of what they feel.

Wow, thankyou for this wonderful video Jill!
All the stereotypes associated with depression and suicide now do need to be faced and this is a great way to get the word out there. The scary thing is, the statistics for attempted suicide would be nowhere near the true figure. Anyway, thankyou.
Take care,
Nicki.
tearsofred 3 years ago 2
I agree with you, there are probably thousands and thousands of attempts that go unreported, particularly the overdoses. Even my brother's suicide was technically ruled an accidental death on the final report. There are probably a lot of cases ruled accidental that were meant as suicides. The stats are probably low. Thanks for watchin'!
jillymsane 3 years ago
Just an incredible video!
Luckily, I've never been suicidal.
theDave1956 3 years ago 2
You're right...my brother was on a new set of meds when he died, we'll never really know if that had an impact or not. Seven years ago you didn't really hear about that so much, it wasn't an issue...now we hear of all the studies showing the link between anti-depressants and suicide in teens. You're right, you just have to watch them very carefully. I still think the meds and treatment are worth the risk overall. Thank so much for watching and supporting.
jillymsane 3 years ago
The most depressed I ever felt was when my psychitrist had me on so many pills...I was being treated for everything adhd, anxiety, depression, mood swings, bi polar..it fucked with my head so much..when they finally took me off them all the depression faded away, and ive learned how to deal with my issues alone..havent taken a pill since i was 16
Juggaloserialeater 3 years ago
I don't think there is one clear answer that will suit every situation or every person. Not everyone needs pills, but I certainly think there are plently of people out there that are being helped by medication. Medication is a tricky thing...it's all about finding the right medication or the right combination of meds for that individiual. There's so much trial and error that unfortunately most people probably do get worse before they ever get better.
jillymsane 3 years ago
Beautifully made video.
Some people say that people "try" to commit suicide just to get attention, but if someone is willing to do that for attention he is in trouble and we should help him.
Nice one Jill.
Ranblv 3 years ago 2
Thanks Ran...you're absolutely right, I think if someone gets to that point in their lives where they feel like that's the only way someone will pay attention and take them seriously, it's already gone beyond what most of us can do to help and they need professional help. The key is to pay attention and help before it gets to that point I think.
