The Historic Casey Jones was killed doing just that, he was traveling at exessive speed in bad weather in order to stay on scheduel when his fireman spotted a stalled freight train right in front of them. however he's best remembered for ordering his fireman to jump while he remained at his post and sounded a frantic warning to the crew of the freight train to get clear while he tried to stop his passenger train, and was killed when they collided, amazingly Jones was the only fatality
A big historic inaccuracy is that Casey was in charge of a passenger train in Mississippi the night of the accident, and the accident itself occured in Mississippi not out west as in the cartoon with Engine 382. Despite his heroism by remaining at his post to try and stop the train, Casey was still found at fault for the accident because apparently he was traveling so fast he failed to see a Flagman and hear the warning torpedoes detonate, which were the signal to slow down
@therailwizard1994 It's funny you mention that because I actually went to a presentation on John Henry, and as it turns out, that tale can be traced back to a similar tunnel that was constructed by prisoners. One of whom was named John William Henry. It was really boring, but worth the extra credit.
The damsel on the track tradition arose out of advances in theatrical special effects in the 1860s. Theatres competed to stage the most spectacular melodramas and terrifying perils for their characters.
The first person tied to a railroad track in a play was a guy, but writers and producers soon realised a delicate heroine in such mortal peril would attract even more sympathy.
The idea may have appeared earlier in cheap novels; the first fatal railway accident occurred in 1830.
everyone, if you pause it at 2:07. look at the list of names on the clip board. does the name, W.Kimball remind eveyone of someone who once had a full size 3 foot gauge railroad running in his backayrd once?
i bet that guy in the switch box must have done alot of practicing with model trains so he could let casey through the railyard each day without an accident. it be cool if there was a model train game where you had to use switches get a train though a railyard full of other trains without crashing.
whats so sinister about tying a woman to a railroad track? and whats the backstory? because maybe I'm confused but, what exactly is the gain? wheres the extortion in just tying some random (irish american) girl to the train tracks?
who was that sadistic and whats that based on? it must have happeed on some level to be such a societal trend in media...
Fantastic cartoon. The real Casey Jones is only known as the Brave Engneer not becasue he got the mail to it's destination on time, but because he stayed at his post, sounding a frantic warning and trying to stop his passenger train before it collided with a stopped freight train, and in the process lost his life, while saving the passengers on his train.
what you're saying is true, so doesn't that make this cartoon malicious to his cause? it shows him as reckless and doesn't mention his sacrifice for anything other than the establishment (getting the US MAIL on time)
This cartoon kind of mocks his life and makes him look like a tool of big 4 and the freemasons,,,
Man I loved these old cartoons, the singing troupe in this one is especially nice. I think my favorite parts were "Nice day...wasn't it." and the brakeman putting down the crooked 'X' for "on time."
Haven't seen this in years. Brings back great memories. I like the music that plays every time it shows the oncoming train that'll crash into Casey Jones.
"Hey Casey you got company! Anybody we know?" LOL!
But as a response to some innacuracy to the real Casey story; The story was most likley eased up to give it a happy ending, and be more like a normal cartoon. The loco is also probaly a 4-4-0 because although not his real locos, 4-4-0s were very recognized in America.
God, this was my favorite cartoon when I was a really little guy (about five years old) and it's still one of my favorites! I was the biggest train fanatic and even though I've taken an interest into space, I'll still love trains, railroading and this cartoon!
the animation in this is beautiful. the elastic fluid gestures and the over the top acting. brilliant. I laugh so hard every time I see him beat up those robbers all effortlessly.
someone should recreate the scene on 1:47 with model trains. lots of switches, junctions, intersections, and still and moving trains, without chrashing one of them.
Oh my goodness. All I remembered of this cartoon from when I was maybe 4 years old was the "Casey Jones... plowin' through the wa-taah! Casey Jones... sloggin' through the muuud!" part. Watching this again after so long is totally bizarre!
Actualy, belive it or not, That has to be one of the more relistic locomotive backheads I've seen in a cartoon! Evrey control was there, mind you a few pressure gauges did jump off and Casey ripped the throttle out of its housing. Remimber this isn't supposed to be an exact verson. Its a Cartoonish Railroad tail and therefor had its artistic libertys, But its still one of the more prototypical Railroad cartoons I've seen.
I must agree, this is a bit historicly in-accurate. E.g. Casey drove a 2-6-0 or a 2-8-0 in the crash, NOT a 4-4-0, and he slammed into the REAR of the freight train, NOT the front, He was KILLED in the accident, he was not a survivor, and a locomotive banged up that badly couldn't move to centmeters! But, nonetheless, it's pretty good.
Gee, he ALSO didn't drive the train underwater, beat up a gang of fifty robbers, make the train go so fast that tunnels exploded and tracks melted, drive over an exploding bridge and proceed to drive uphill without tracks. It's a friggin' cartoon, not a documentary!! It does depict some scenes that were loosely based on actual events surrounding him, like the part where he saves the woman, which in real life was a young girl standing there in terror and it didn't happen on that same day.
actually...On casey Joan's last run he did have to pass threw a rain storm that caused lots of washouts. He did wade his locomotive therw sevral of them. Its wasn't underwater tlike they show it here, But he did do a little Steam wadeing. In fact thats why he was late!
What's your point? I said he didn't drive the train "underwater" like a submarine would. I was making fun of those who were concerned about the accuracy of the cartoon by citing parts that would have made it painfully obvious to the average person that the cartoon isn't trying to make anyone believe they are watching the actual events leading up to the crash.
You idiot, bull11234. I'm AGREEING with you! I was making the case that this was only a cartoon and making fun of people concerned about the accuracy of the cartoon. Please read my entire comment before replying to it. (Did you mean to reply to someone else, but accidentally clicked on mine instead? If so, then I'm sorry).
He probably wanted to make it more kid friendly. Besides, most stories don't follow exactly. (Alice in Wonderland, Princ of Egypt (non Disney), even Little Mermaid).
