  • John, you need a box!

  • you guys are really good. normally i listen to stuff like rock and metal and stuff but this is actually one of my favorite songs

  • Thanks for the kind words, Bob.

  • Awesome! Great voices and a great rendition of a brilliant song by a true songster. Thanks!

  • Mighty Cloudstreet, John and Nicole belting out this grand song!

    Totally sober!!

    Ray Padgett

  • Beautiful! I'm from Ireland, you guys have an authentic Celtic diction!

  • Thanks - a fabulous version of a wonderful song by my hero. Cheers!

  • fabulous harmonies !!!

  • Fantastic version of this song... these two are great singers, love the harmony!

Holly Cole does another wonderful version of this song. It's darker but she sounds quite angelic. She did a whole album of Tom Waits songs entitled: TEMPTATION. It's truly a brilliant tribute to Tom. Check it out.

  • Dear Cloudstreet,

I am a big fan of several gentlemen from the UK that near every Christmas, they call themselves "Nowell, Sing We Clear". Their harmonies are amazing. But to hear you two do with just two voices (even with the help of the guy in the audience who needs to be quiet), I sit here undone. Every now and again, Tom Waits gives us a gem. This one is no exception. I may invent an instrumental version of this for the Irish whistle. Thanks, guys and good luck.

    Bob

  • You guys are a hoot. Well done.

  • this was worthy of the man himself.

i don't usually thank people for making me cry.

    thank you

  • This song's become one of my favourite Tom Waits songs, and I'm really glad to see it covered so well. It's truly a timeless song - sounds as if it was a traditional who's origins are lost in time. Beautifully sung!

  • And now I see that you've got "folk trad" in the tags, but no Tom Waits. So maybe someone else thought it sounds like an old traditional? :) Tom Waits actually wrote the song for a play called "The Black Rider" in 1993. I recommend adding "Tom Waits" to the tag, so that Waits fans find this beautiful rendition.

  • Glad you liked the song. We've added Tom Waits into the tags - thanks for the suggestion. We managed to see the restaging of The Black Rider at the Barbican in 2003 with Marianne Faithfull as the devil. Fabulous.

  • Wow, I'm jealous! :)

  • My proud boast!! I got them their 1st UK Radio airplay!

Saw them on their 1st UK Festival at Wheaton Aston several years back and was so impressed that I bought their (then) 2 CDs on the Sunday. Passed one of them on to Mick Peat of Radio Derby's folkwaves and he played a couple of tracks on the Monday evening!

  • Great sound! You're right though, the pictures a bit dark, and I got a bit sea sick watching john sway! :) Hope you play in a house concert in Brisbane soon like we talked about. Let me know! Love peace and joy

    Jenny (Bec's sister)

  • This is a great rendidition of the song.

  • Best version of this song I've ever heard: every time I hear them sing it!

    Trish

  • A grand performance, with an enthusiastic audience. Great stuff!!

    Murray

  • Heh, just read the post on Mudcat, Cloudstreet posted it themselves :-D

Did you give yourselves permission first? (it's Andrew the Melodeon player from Coventry btw.... hi!)

  • Hi Andrew,

We did have a big meeting first and decided by majority vote that it would be alright to post the video.

    ;)

    John

  • We had a great night when John and Nicola visited us between gigs at our little local music session in Coventry. Was it really last year, time flies.

Great to see them on Youtube (now, you did ask them first, didn't you?)

  • I am a big fan of Cloudstreet as I am sure are so many others. I tried playing this clip but it won't play. Has anyone else had this problem? KB

  • No way, JaymieandAlex - it's all part of the magic, and I wouldn't change a thing. Ya lovely buggers, J&N, you're too far (could you hear the bass harmony?) and it's all too much for my frail constitution...come back soon, no - Tomorrow!

    It'll be rozellas again tonight...

  • Maybe we should tie John's hands behind his back to see if he can still so beautifully without them.

See you next week at YFF.
