The song came from "DISNEYLAND"'s three-part "Davy Crockett" mini-series of 1954-'55, and both that and the theme became monster hits [not to mention the merchandising of official and unlicensed "Davy Crockett" toys, et. al.]. You can bet this was featured on "YOUR HIT PARADE" for a good long while in early '55; the only problem was HOW to "frame" the song every week it was on the charts, so viewers wouldn't get bored with it...this was one way of presenting it.
It can't be retrieved, but it's nice to have a glimpse now and then into a pre-PC America. Given that David Crockett (born Davide de Crocketagne, incidentally) stuck up for the rights of poor squatters in Western Tennessee, I wonder what he would make of homelessness and the subprime debacle.
Many of the big artists of the time had 78's on this tune: Ernie Ford on Capitol; Fess Parker on Columbia; Bill Hayes on Cadence. There might have been others, but I believe these were the big sellers.
he died unfortunately in the Alamo in San Antonio Texas

I had a cap and wore it to pieces. I could have been the dark-haired girl painting. Thanks for this!

The coonskin cap is a Disney invention. The real Crockett never wore one. I read his biography.

We all knew the great pioneers and Cowboys back then. I doubt if these kids nowadays even know who Davy Crockett is.

I doubt if most of the kids today know where New York City is...let alone who Davy Crockett is!

Most kids I bet don't know what state THEY live in. Let alone Davy. Thank goodness I grew up watching the movies.

Even worse...the kids do not know who the
performers are on their favorite recordings!

I doubt I knew the name of the singer on the 7" 78 I had of this song. Was it Frankie Laine? I can't remember.
