Always loved this tune. Since the very first time it came in contact with my ears. I love the vocals in this, the way he shouts out. By the way, pretty rad video.
The 3rd Ultimate Spinach album is my favorite. I think Jeff (Skunk) Baxter really improved the musical standard of the band, after most of the original members got kicked out of the band.
Groovy! I can get my Ultimate Spinach fix online now & I can preserve my albums. Thanks for the great collection. I'd love to hear a re-release of Ian Bruce-Douglas' music the way he wanted to. I'd also love to play guitar on it too. I can't wait to hear it. Peace
"Visions of Your Reality" and "Your Head is Reeling" are my favorites for sure. "Your Head is Reeling" in my eyes is the best tune of the 60's. Something about the drums, bass and guitar mix together so well. Did you have any part of the third album? Like vocals or piano? The only good song on the third album is "Some Days You Just Can't Win".
To be fair: a few years later my next band, The Ian Bruce-Douglas Apocalypse opened for Hot Tuna and the guys were nothing but friendly. Hell, they even laid a few joints of good CA reefer on me and gave me their personal mailing addresses. So, in my eyes, they redeemed themselves.
I was so angry that I didn't even stay to hear them! The next day, I went to my local music store to check out a new guitar and everyone kept congratulating me but I didn't know why. When they told me, I was shocked and pleased that y'all were yelling "Spinach! SPINACH!" whey they came on stage...for which I still thank you!
@fullwedge: I remember that concert fondly. Actually, I was VERY angry by the time we performd and played like a demon. Why? Because, up to that point, I'd been a fan and was thrilled to open for them. So, I went to their dressing room, introduced myself and told them how honored I was. They were downright rude and dismissive and barely acknowledged my presence.
Ian..... The videos are certainly cool, but the music captures the 60's and 70's need for "something more " Get a band back together and come to Chicago !
Yeah, it’s really me. No big deal, though. I’m just this gnarly Old Bastard who writes music. Even waaaaay back before computers, when people used to write me interesting letters about my music and what it meant to them, I used to spend a lot of time replying to every one...with an old, beat-up 'Royal' typewriter and a whole lot of 'White Out'! I’m still that way 43 years (gulp!) later.
I figure that if people take the time to write to me, I’d be a real jerk not to reply. After all, without people buying my music and going to my shows, who would be left???
First band I saw live at a free concert on Boston Common. I was in jr. high, my older brother took me.They were the soundtrack to my youth. Still have the vinyl, but much worn.
Your Head Is Reeling - The Ultimate Spinach [Boston, Massachusetts] - 1968 - "AMG pick. VERY GOOD. He LIKELY played Country Joe & the Fish's first LP over and over." - The Very Best Of Ultimate Spinach-2001. NOTE: Has grungy, Distorted Doors guitar lifted straight out of Robby Krieger's intro to "The End". Ultimate Spinach LP reached No.34 in 1968.
AZLBRAX...Ultimate Spinach was one of my favorite bands back about 40 years ago. I have all three albums, and also have the 1st one on 8 track. Man, you gave me some great trips and some great memories. On occassion I still listen to the them. They still sound great. Thank you Ian. BTW...Do you keep in touch with any of your old band mates?
JAM296 – I don’t know about being a BAD ass…but I sure-as-hell am a TIRED ass. I must say that it amazes me that people, like you…young enough to be my grandchildren…find value in my old tunes. Thank you…and I am humbled.
@AZLBRAX ....good music is always in order, I think younger folk today are tired of the canned shit, overproduced crap...plus this has some awesome harmonies and blending: "head is reeling"
@GreenHerbsmanarrives: Thank you. Basically, they were "D modal add 9" parts. FWIW: "Your Head Is Reeling" is one of MY personal favorites on the 1st album.
I have been thinking about doing updated versions of those tunes...and "Head" would DEFINITELY be one of those. Hope y'all can deal with it, if I do!!!
@inriches Inriches – No, we didn’t participate in Woodstock. That would have been something, wouldn’t it??? (We would have been blown off the stage by all the major acts, I reckon!)
@AZLBRAX -(We would have been blown off the stage by all the major acts, I reckon!) - Well , your works might not have been commercial , but seeing they have survived the test of time , what u wrote back then is legendary to say the least :D .
@nycoshouse Nycoshouse: Good call! I wrote the tune in “D-modal” tuning: (low to high) D-A-D-G-B-D. Geoff played his parts in regular tuning and I played mine on a 12-string in “D-modal”…which remains one of my favorite tunings to this day. I LOVE that drone “D” sound. I don’t have tablature…but, if you want to contact me privately…and if you give a Tired Old Man some time, I would be happy to give you MY parts.
@AZLBRAX i would personally like to thank you greatly for your amazing contribution in music, your music honestly is what keeps people sane and inspired in life , and for me to make art , im only 16 but this music is amazing and will always be that. no matter how much music disintegrates from media people will always listen to your stuff, thanks for the inspiration!
Bruce Thank you for these innovative tracks. I still have a vinal copy of this album in mint condition I bought for $3.98 as they say "back in the day"
@canadawickedclown666: What would that prove? I sure as hell don't look like I did over 40 years ago. And: why would anyone want to pretend to be me? Then again, I did have this online stalker chasing me around for over 3 years. Sometimes, he'd sign on some forum as "Azlbrax" and just cause a lot of problems and post hateful things.
Actually, if you're THAT curious about me at age 64 check out Christina Bishop/ galaxygirl 68 on myspace. She posted a short vid of me at her party, just messing around on my custom-built Beard acoustic/ electric lap guitar.
For some reason, youtube won’t let me post the URL.
@AZLBRAX - Hey, thanks for all the cool music. I was out there in the Haight, as a child, and have been interested in what I "missed," ever since. I still think dropping acid is one of the best things the average citizen can do! One day, the laws will reflect the mindblowing introspection that LSD offers the masses!
I saw your band open for Jefferson Airplane in Providence Rhode Island. I was a huge Spinach fan and went to the show with friends who were into the Airplane. As the show went on it was clear: you guys stole the show. No-one wanted you to leave the stage! The Airplane were good, but you were great!
