This is one of the numbers that really showcases Allan's fabulous voice...accurate, pure, dynamic and strong. Allan, please... never be sad about your voice....you have all of this brilliance recorded, and your remarkable body of work can be admired for ever. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
heard the studio track of this song on an album my dad has with some studio chatter in it and the chattering the Hollies are doing in the studio between takes of this song is absolutely really funny I'm loving this band
Listening to this song bouncing around the cavernous TV studio in this clip adds some needed acoustic "presence" to a fairly "thin" sounding studio recording. I really like this song..and The Hollies. Thanks for posting!
@LarryRickenbacker This isn't the studio recording. Hicks' guitar is very different. It's a performance on which we can hear Graham's acoustic. He's not unplugged! Thanks for posting this.
Sorry to say but the blend of Allen Tony & Graham is far superior to that of Crosby & Stills..not even in the same ballpark. The Hollies sound was very exciting to listen to as I was growing up in the 60's, I never felt that way about CS&N.
@rocksinger45 I am inclined to agree about the blend of Graham, Allan and Tony, since Graham and Allan sang together since childhood and Hicks grew up not too far away. The same regional accent does make a difference.
CSN may not blend as well, but gave Nash the artistic freedom he needed. They are a phenomenon largely because of the magical catalyst that is Graham's ability to harmonize. Nash could sing with anyone and make it sound good; that's why he and Crosby have sung backup so often.
@NewHopeNashFan I personally think it was more about timing than the water from a certain part of England. CS&N were part of Woodstock which made all the performers there stars. All the bands that made it here during the British Invasion were serving up a different kind of sound that the Beatles has open the door for.
I live in LA and saw the Laurel Canyon sound come to live first hand and never felt the excitement that I felt from the British invasion maybe the grass is greener over there.
@rocksinger45 England's green and pleasant land has produced a lot of the groups I listen to most, actually. Besides Nash any which way, I love A LOT of British music. I was a small child when I first heard 'yeah, yeah, yeah' and 'On a Carousel' in the sixties, and just past my Bluebird days when the Vietnam War was on the news and CSN sang about stopping it. Wasn't the CSN era more about protest than enthusiasm and charisma?
The Hollies are so incredibly underrated, they had such amazing harmony and so many hit songs. They deserve a lot more recognition. They're definitely one of my favourite sixties bands :)
I've noted on other videos of his area. The camera seems to spend more time on Graham Nash than lead singer Allan Clarke. Strange, but "it is what it is".
@fillhixx At that time Allan and Graham were more like co-leads. They both got to do solos, and their close harmony singing together (with Tony) was what gave the band its distinctive sound. Graham left, in part, because a rivalry developed between him and Allan over who was top dog and what direction the band should take.
@Oswulf1 The reason Graham left was that the rest of the group - and probably especially Tony Hicks - weren't into his progressive ideas and visionary songwriting. He wanted to break out of the formula the Hollies were stuck in and make more meaningful music. I don't see him ever disputing Allan Clarke's supremacy as a lead singer. What he himself has is an ORIGINAL VOICE, and he has always needed to say something with it.
thats why there is only one hollies tribute band around ( think they are still going?) because not every one can do the harmonies ! ps if any one knows the tribute band from wolverhampton please get in touch ! they are/were called just one look
Not a cover, the original. It was a top 10 hit in the UK in 1965. The Monkees' version was released on their first album a year later.
Weirdly, Davy Jones had no idea it was a cover until a Monkees' UK reunion tour in the 80s when he read a review in the newspaper mentioning that the Monkees did a Hollies song!
I remember this as sung by Davy Jones on the first Monkees' album. But wasn't its tilte "I'll Be True To You"? Perhaps my memory is fading. Also, George Hamilton! I always wondered what he was famous for and this clip answers that question.
it must be so annoying for rock performers to sing in front of people whose job is to dance for the cameras, rehearsed dances which don't necessarily go well with the music, instead of dancing naturally and spontaneously.
Please dont Ever take this video off "You Tube " its "Priceless" ...Allan is so young and cute and this is the way I will always see him!!! thnx for posting ...Lyndloo....
What brand of guitar is Tony playing? I remember seeing it on one of their albums when I was a young guitar playing twerp but I hadn't started appreciating brands at that time.
@EJGGEV You are quite right, Hollies are ONE of the greatest bands out there. Being the true Beatles fan, I want to add just one wee detail: impact, success, longevity of a band are in no way measured by the lenghth of the career.
Well, in The Beatles defense: They made beautiful music too. And John Lennon had a better voice than Allen Clark did. Plus, George Harrison was a better guitarist than Tony Hicks. And I believe Paul is better harmony singer than Graham Nash. But, you're right that they lasted longer.
@Rysmugen In the great Graham Nash's defense - he sings harmony for a lot of people to this day and his voice has held up quite well. If anyone is an expert and truly a **specialist ** at it, it's him.
@EJGGEV I like the Hollies my self too and theire musi is indeed immortal but don't sorry me because I am a huge Beatles fan and the beatles music is just as immortal than the Hollies, the Stones or any other british band form Liverpool, Mancheter, London or anywhere else form the UK.
WOW. that was some riff Tony!

As for comparisons to the Beatles, I would'nt detract from either group by making comparisons to the other, but each to their own.
