True. The thing is that I can see his has some talent, but the comments below totally overstate it. Take away all the fuss and the drugs and the hype, and you have some reasonably good songs, but nowhere near as good as british bands in the last 20 years that I would regard as truly seminal - Stone Roses, Smiths, Oasis, Radiohead, Blur and so on. As far as your fumbling attempt to educate me is concerned, "catalogue" has an "e" and "unequalled" two "ls". Your line "there is your two greatest lyricists and songwriters" - should be "there are", since "lyricistS" and "songwriterS" is plural and you use "they" at the end, which is also plural. Your argument about "successful back catalogs (sic)" makes the mistake of assuming big sales = good music. I am sure the Spice Girls outsold Mozart, but I don't think the former have the same talent.
To further vouch for Pete Doherty's immense talent, Clash guitarist, songwriter, and producer Mick Jones also sought out Doherty on the merits of his songwriting desiring to produce his work. Mick Jones is an architect of one of the great movements of British music and he has the utmost respect for Doherty as an artist. Until you can produce credentials qualifying yourself with Sir Paul, Elton John, and Mick Jones(just to name a few)your criticisms just don't seem to carry any weight at all.
For every good to great artist, I could find examples of other artists' praise - e.g. Townsend rated the Roses' drummer as the best since Moon. Your musical taste seems limited to Elton and Paul and you justify this purely on musical sales, yet by your own logic, Doherty himself is insignificant since his album sales are relatively small. You come over as incredibly arrogant and intellectually pretentious - yet, as demonstrated below, you can't spell simple words yet erroneously lecture others.
album sales don't mean shit any more most of the people are listening to some top 40 chart bollocks. Also pete goes into more depth than that kind of music.
P.s. the internet has alot to answer for, it's quicker, easier and free to get albums.

Take away all the fuss and the drugs and the hype, and you have some reasonably good songs, but nowhere near as good as british bands in the last 20 years that I would regard as truly seminal - Stone Roses, Smiths, Oasis, Radiohead, Blur and so on. Paul McCartney and Elton John have both given verbal testamonies as to their respect for Pete Doherty as one of greatest writers alive. Sir Paul actually requested to be interviewed by Doherty. He had been so impressed to the point he wanted to arrange meeting Pete this way. There's your two greatest British lyricists and songwriters and if they respect the man's abilities .....nuff said.

The fact you think Elton John is a great british lyricist shows your complete ignorance about music. He couldn't write lyrics to save his life. That's why he brought in B. Taupin to do it - he wrote ALL the lyrics and Elton John the music. Macca? Yes, better, but he only wrote simple love songs (although v well) whereas Lennon tried to be more challenging with imagery etc (after meeting Dylan). The fact you also ignore the Smiths, Kinks, Stones, Who, Zep, Bowie, Roses etc etc is a total joke

In linguistics, "and" is a grammaticle particle, a word (conjunction)lacking a strict definition but has the function of changing the relation of the parts of the sentence to one another: "lyricist and songwriter"
The fact you don't understand this pretty much renders your reply a complete time-waster (see: What A Waster). The fact that I ignored Smiths, Kinks, etc., is the collective catalogs of successful works by McCartney and Elton John are simply unequaled by those you've named.

As far as your fumbling attempt to educate me is concerned, "catalogue" has an "e" and "unequalled" two "ls". Your line "there is your two greatest lyricists and songwriters" - should be "there are", since "lyricistS" and "songwriterS" is plural and you use "they" at the end, which is also plural. Your argument about "successful back catalogs (sic)" makes the mistake of assuming big sales = good music. I am sure the Spice Girls outsold Mozart, but I don't think the former have the same talent.

To further vouch for Pete Doherty's immense talent, Clash guitarist, songwriter, and producer Mick Jones also sought out Doherty on the merits of his songwriting desiring to produce his work. Mick Jones is an architect of one of the great movements of British music and he has the utmost respect for Doherty as an artist. Until you can produce credentials qualifying yourself with Sir Paul, Elton John, and Mick Jones(just to name a few)your criticisms just don't seem to carry any weight at all.

For every good to great artist, I could find examples of other artists' praise - e.g. Townsend rated the Roses' drummer as the best since Moon. Your musical taste seems limited to Elton and Paul and you justify this purely on musical sales, yet by your own logic, Doherty himself is insignificant since his album sales are relatively small. You come over as incredibly arrogant and intellectually pretentious - yet, as demonstrated below, you can't spell simple words yet erroneously lecture others.

poor pete. i always enjoy watching him being interviewed, but there must have been something upsetting going on at the time because he seems quite distracted and down-trodden. it mustn't help when interviewers continuously "paint a negative picture", as pete described it. it would just make him sink further and further into a depression, believing that THAT is all he is remembered for. i'm sure he'd be different if people reminded him how much value he has as a person. i love pete!

Yes but i'll be the first to admit that you and me most probably don't have half the passion, soul or creativity that this man has. He's a lyrical genius and his songs speak to people in a way that can't be taught to somebody. He's had to put up with so much crap from the press that, in his shoes, i'd probly OD just to escape from the abusive mis-informed stories they like to print on a daily basis. If he feels that taking drugs is his way into arcadia then let it be..however i have faith.
