  • I would love to see the HST 230gr .45 in sim-test media. We have your prominent carry round the HST in 9mm 147gr, it would be a cool addendum to see the .45 of the same round...

  • They are bascially the ole black talon round ..I love this ammo ...

  • I might be playing "Captain obvious" there, but it just amazes me at how much engineering is put into those projectiles.

  • Making a hollowpoint is a real science in itself, for it is a lot more than just drilling a hole in the tip. It also requires making weakening cuts, and using the appropriate alloys to ensure the proper balance between penetration and expansion.

  • Didnt care for this ammo for my xd-45. It shot very wild..bad batch maybe?

Just to make sure, I loaded REM Golden Saber 185gr and it shot really well. Also a box of UMC 50 rnds and nothing but flawless results.

bad batch or bad ammo for xd..not sure but that was my experience.

  • Is actual FBI-spec ballistics gel expensive?

  • @perspicacity89 Yes, and it is also not reusable, the Sim Test is re usable, a very good selling point.

  • what caused that cavitation? didnt get that with the Speer Gold Dot

  • have u done any test with the winchester. white box jhp with Sim TEST MEDIA?

  • Much better results than with the .38 caliber PDX1 ammo that was tested.

  • Even though I have a mag or two loaded with PDX1's, I'm beginning to believe the Ranger-T's are a tad better for civilian carry because they tend to have much nastier expansion. These bonded bullets are great for shooting through barriers (glass, sheet metal), so they're good for anti-carjacking duty, but they trade off a bit of expansion for weight retention. If only I could find standard-pressure 230gr HST's or Ranger-T's in stock somewhere at a reasonable price... :-(

  • @darkwriter77 I know this is an old post, but you can find them at SGammo online or at mahsupplies as well. Both online. Both great prices. On Winchester, HST, and Gold Dot

  • Do you know how the the Winchester "white box" USA in 230gr JHP would compare to the PDX1? White box is one of the few hollow point (Zombie Zapper) ammunition choices we have up in the frozen north.

    I really appreciate your testing.

  • I'd like to see a steel plate test instead of jell. First start with a 1/4 inch then 3/8 then 1/2 inch.

  • Do not buy this garbage. i bought two boxes of it. one box looked perfect the other the cavity was unsemetrical the rounds were different weights. I fired five rounds frfom each box 4 rounds in 50 gallon barrel 4 in water just with 3 layers denim and 2 into wetpack jugs. out of the 10 round 1 of 4 expanded in the 50 gallon barrel 2 of 4 expanded in water jugs and neither expande in wetpack not to mention one hangfire and one failure to fire. for what you spend on this you can get hornady taps.

  • Where does this ammo compare to the Winchester Ranger .45acp? I hear good things about both.

  • we were shooting that at a fishing pond yesterday and one of the pdx1's we dug out of the ground expanded about the size of a quarter. It's actually on my most recent video

  • Without sounding like a shit, do you know haow a round would do in body fat vs muscle and bone?

  • thanks for another great test, T9!

any way you can start shooting two rounds of the same jhp into each gel block? seems big enough to be feasible. plus, gives you an extra round for comparison.

  • Great ballistics test. Now that is a big bullet heavy bullet. Seems the Winchester PDX1 brand does a good job in expansion. Very well done.

  • Nice video as always.. I think my dad carries this stuff in his Kimber... really nice stuff!

  • :) one more nice video. Thank you for taking time and sharing about this one.

  • Really appreciate the high quality information you are providing in your ammo test videos, and the time and care you take to present them.

  • I was really looking forward to this one, especially since the last test did not have favorable results. This is exactly the round I carry and also in a 1911. I chose this round because the FBI carries this (only in 9mm I believe) so it's got to be good right?? LOL

Obviously much better results this time. Do u think the new testing media played a role or did we just get lucky this time and the bullet didnt clog with denim?

  • The video was very informative and the new media you are now using for testing is great. I look forward to seeing more reviews.

  • Are you sure about Lindsay Lohan ? j/k

  • @purkjason

Well, I guess that could depend on how you look at it!

  • I really am liking this media that your now using so we call all see the bullets path.

    Great as always. Thanks

  • good review as always Thanks.

  • Ahhhhh... Confidence! This is the cartridge that allows me to sleep like a baby at night. And you hit the nail on the head with the good job done by the Marketing Dept. at Winchester; availability was the main reason I chose this ammo. Thank you for testing my home protection ammo.

  • Nice test and a thumbs up

  • I think it would be intresting to compare two lead bullets, one untouched and the other with an "X" cut into the tip. It would be neat to see it the one with the X would expand like they are said to.

  • The problem I've had with the Winchester PDX1 Ammo is that the primers on pretty much every round become corroded very quickly with white oxidation. I've seen that with three different calibers, so I know it's not just a bad batch of primers. I just don't buy them anymore.

  • I've seen LosAngelesWeedSmoker trolling on Hickok45's videos before. Please just vote him off. He's high and annoying.

  • Good Test. I Have to say I have always enjoyed watching your ballistics tests and I always check your ballistics test of any new ammo before I chose to use it in my carry gun.

  • hey dude dont worry about LAWeedSmoker hes just a troll, ive seen him on other peoples vids trolling to, block him

  • Sir, how would your measurements relate to real life self defense? Sensitive subject I know.

  • @MrStrawberrification

You could take it as a representation of a best-case scenario and hope to achieve similar results. There are just way too many factors beyond our control....movement, barriers, body composition, clothing, adrenalin, drugs, the will to live, etc.

  • Because the entry trail was so narrow and then a few inches in it became very wide, does that mean the bullet took a few inches or more to actually expand? I was under the impression that a self defense round is supposed to expand almost immediately after hitting a person or in this case the sim media. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Thank you for doing these videos, I really enjoy them. Don't let the people nit picking everything bother you, this series is super informative.

  • @AndrewTannerCA Indeed it is, TN is one of the nicest guys on YT

  • cool video i bought this ammo for my sig 220.. now thanks to you i can feel good about this ammo.... great video!!!!!!!! take care.

  • My hat’s off to you for all your time and hard work that you put in to making these very informative, and entertaining, videos. Rather than being critical of your efforts, people should be thanking you.

  • Cool, another informative video.

  • you go above and beyond doing these tests for us. fantastic.

  • wow at 2:44

  • 900 fps..that doesnt even sound lethal! they have airsoft guns that go almost 600 fps..

  • @woa11 they have a bb guns that go 1200fps dont let the fps fool you a .45 will knock you on your ass trust me!!

  • @detectingupstate Yes and the test BB's he shot into the media were fired from a crossman with a speed of 720fps and only went in a little over 3 inches vs over 14" for the 900 fps 230 gr .45. Another thing is, even if the .45 didn't expand, I don't think it would make a hill of beans of difference, 230gr ball or hollow-point the hole is going to be at least half an inch across and knock anyone on their ass. A 9mm hollow-point hopefully will expand to at least .45 but will still lack the wt

  • @woa11 Ever heald a big 230 grain bullet in your hand? It's heavy enough to mess someone up just firing it out of a sling shot

  • Nice vid, 14 3/4 inches of penetration in a 230 grain round, what more do you need.

  • Thank you for the video post, I use this ammo

  • Can someone explain "bonded" ? how is the copper bonded to the lead?

  • Superb camera work. I can actually see not only denim strands but remnants of the gel shredded on the expanded bullet which also will add weight. Interesting scientific experiment. I like the reporting of temperature and calibration. I sometimes wonder in shooting in Ky how much impact humidity of air has on performance compared to temperature. Shooting over white gravel may reflect more heat up than a darker soil to target for example. Approaching rain changes air pressure and density.

  • IMO, PDX1 is the best all-around self defense load available to the general public.

The federal HST is the best expander, and the speer golddot is the best penetrator.

  • Looks like they should even feed fairly well in the finicky guns too? My RIA is funny about HP's but the Kimber,Colt, and AMT could care less.

  • Very nicely done! Thanks.

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker

    1. I left out BAD information? Please explain.

    2. What other two rounds? If you are referring to the G30 wetpack test, it failed to expand, one shot.

Expectations of seeing any round perfectly expand in this type of media, through heavy cloth, are not realistic; also in the real world. Just because a bullet doesn't have 100% symmetrical "photo op" expansion should not make it a failure.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Looks like winchester made a potent little piece of rape right here. Love the gel blocks.

  • Comment removed

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker Yep, when God was molding you he said

"with this clay I'm going to make the perfect idiot"

Looks like you turned out exactly as planned, idiot.

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker

This might take a couple of responses.

Please prove that every test of your carry load has shown 100% symmetrical expansion in similar media/denim. Every bullet you fire from your handgun is a candidate for unpredictable expansion, controlled ammo tests be damned. How can I say this test had unpredictable expansion when I didn't know what to expect? I can also go on for many minutes, and I'm making more sense with this audience.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Obviously you are wrong with everything you are doing...LOL! These ballistic tests are some of the best thought out and executed I have seen on youtube. In depth and honest results. You have taken a lot of time with preparing wet pack and this new gel and I think have done a heck of a job. Just remember you are arguing with someone named LosAngelesWeedSmoker ;)

Keep up the great work, I really appreciate these tests.

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker

    Facts:

The PDX1 at .747 and 14 3/4" may or may not stop a threat with one shot.

The .45 Hornady Critical Defense at .747 and 14 3/4" may or may not stop a threat with one shot.

All bullets can fail due to circumstances beyond the ammo mfg's control.

    Don't expect a full-frontal stationary shot in a self-defense situation.

There are no more JFK "magic bullets".

Lindsay Lohan is a poor role model for teenage girls.

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker Dude....are you high right now??

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker I don't expand much when I get heavily clogged, either - I just feel mighty uncomfortable and tend to get a little grumpy. But I eat lots of fiber, so it doesn't happen very often. :-) I think this is a good review with good info, very well done. PDX1 is my second choice for carry ammo (Hornady Critical Defense is my number 1 pick) but it's great for vehicle ammo where a bonded bullet for weight retention (and extra mass) is needed to shoot through glass effectively.

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker - Your screen name says it all. Go smoke another one you jackass.

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker He shot the first three to show the recoil of the round in the test weapon, then he fired another in to the test media. What BAD info you talking about? I test ammo also in media, I hardly ever get a perfect mushroom? You complain about the bullet but state you have them LOL

  • man that is alot of lead coming at you

  • Following your various methods of testing has been most interesting. Thanks for sharing your info!

  • Why do you shoot only once? I think the experiment would have more validity if you shoot for example three times.

  • @asznam

Absolutely, we could see various degrees of penetration and expansion with multiple shots. Even if I had the time, which I don't, at what point do you stop shooting a block or multiple blocks? 5, 10, 25 shots might be a "standard" for someone else. As for a single block, my concern would be the bullet paths crossing each other, which invalidates the process. These tests are only a representation. I'm never going to be a full-fledged ammo testing lab.

  • @asznam

When Winchester and Speer, among others, do their ballistic gel testing and demonstration for law enforcement, they only shoot one round for each test segment (bare, denim, wall board, auto glass, etc). One round is typically more than sufficient to get an idea of how a round will perform. The only time shooting more than one round for testing is recommended, is when using a chronograph as shooting 5 gives you the extreme spread, and when shooting for groups at long range.

  • @operator714 thanks for the answer.

  • @asznam Interesting idea, and yes perhaps in an ideal world, with hundreds of rounds, in a perfectly controlled environment, no doubt with many employees! I reckon that really, given this is a self defense load, it should function as advertised every single time, without fail, and therefore each round ought to be representative of the ammunition. If this one test shows the round failing, then that is simply not good enough. If it shows it succeeding, you can take from that what you will.

  • Excellent info, thanks for posting. Do you have a blog or website where you log all your test results and round info? The multitude of available rounds and opinions on them are dizzying.

  • @txmalcontent

Sorry, I do not. YouTube is the primary platform, and I don't foresee that changing. There were requests last year to post a video slideshow with the data, but that would be a huge project. And, it would be out of date as soon as I posted the next test. I'm trying to manage the playlists for all these various calibers....it currently needs some work. Just this year already I've added .380, .22 LR, expanded the .45 ACP offering, and .38 Special is forthcoming VERY soon.

  • Good review and simple to understand logic. Thanks for doing this series of tests!

  • i would love to see u test birdshot from a 12 gauge in the sim test cause everybody says it wont penetrate enough and it would be kind of cool to see what it would accualy do

  • T H X good review. I have this is my Sig P220 nightstand gun.

  • Great test there good buddy, It makes me wonder if a re-test of the PDX1 124gr +p 9MM would yield better results in the SIM-TEST gel. But Ive got more faith in the .45 PDX1 now.

  • @granitemonkey Keep in mind this round is intended for better barrier penetration. Where I live drive-by common so you might have to shoot some cartel in there SUV as they try to shoot you. This is where PDX1 shines lol.

  • PLEASE TEST CORBON POWRBALLS!!!

  • thanks tnoutdoors for doing these tests :)

  • Very thorough review. Great job.

  • Kenyata, I'm on the iPad so I can't reply to. This would if expanded would not pass through. You are not accounting for bone, etc. Which would inevitably be hit if you shoot center mass.

  • Thanks...you provide a great service to the rest of us.

  • A unique cavity but man that second stretch would be right in the lungs and heart if center mass. Glad to see this round has redeemed itself out of a longer barrel!

  • it performed similarly to a rifle bullet.

  • How do you control the .45 so well???

  • you should do two shot one normal and won with the hollow point filled with dirt to see if it still expands

  • how often do you clean your guns?

  • i dont really like these rounds at all after the last two tests where they both had the exact same issue of clogging the hollow point cavity. and that wound channel kinda makes me wonder if what COULD have happend (not saying it did) was it clogged the hollow point at first, and somehow enough of the denim came out towards the middle and it expanded from there. just a theory, dont know how plausible it is.

  • I love these videos, very informative. I heard you say something about a bad performance using the Glock 30, could you tell us more about that. I'm interested due to the fact that I own a G30.

    Thanks!

  • I am currently running the Pow'R Ball ammo in my 1911. Do you know if these rounds you tested feed reliably through the 1911 platform? I have tried running Speer Gold Dots and my 1911 didn't like it but the hallow point tips look nice and rounded on the Winchesters you got there. Good video.

  • Keep in mind, there will most likely be more expansion and bigger wound cavities as the bullet shatters bone. It would be interesting to see some SIM-TEST impregnated with some kind of material to simulate ribs and sternum. Pork ribs, turkey legs, I don't know what would most closely match the density of a human rib.

  • 2:43 BYE BYE INTERNAL ORGANS

  • ok i am finish debating with you young ladies... we shall see the results when tnoutdoor test the golden sabers

  • As always, great job! :)

  • 45 HST!

  • Golden saber is the only way to go guys..... If u really wanna crush the bad guy

  • @kenyata Yes, take your ignorance elsewhere. You aren't military or law enforcement, much less an informed citizen. This isn't a video game and I don't know what the "Hip-Hop" culture has taught you about firearms, but a big hole doesn't tell the complete story. This isn't a pissing contest where the largest diameter bullet wins. Someone like you who struggles to spell or grasp basic concepts really shouldn't be handling firearms. Careful you don't shoot yourself in the foot, retard.

  • @Garuda1337 I see, just out of curiosity though why the hostility? Granted his assumptions are ridiculous but it doesn't seem that he is rooted in those misconceptions. Perhaps a simple explanation will put an end to those misconceptions? Of course I could be all wet wasting my time giving him the benefit of the doubt, just have to wait and see.

In any event have a good evening, my apologies for the earlier exchange, I try not to initiate hostility but I always meet hostility with equal force

  • @bigboss686 Yeah my mistake. I clicked your comment box on accident when I submitted that comment. I was actually agreeing with you. I would have given him the benefit of the doubt, but I saw the comments he posts on other videos and I all he does is troll on other ammo tests and rap videos. Lost my cool.

  • @Garuda1337 Well you should be, after all, I never let things like that happen when I engage someone in discussion (waits for lightning to strike) LOL

Don't worry about it, we've all been guilty of losing it on the Internet a time or two :D

  • That's an awesome macro. what camera are you using?

  • @gunrobot

Sony HDR-CX110. This file is an MPEG4, and is much smaller than the MPEG2's I've been uploading. I'm not anticipating any noticable difference in quality. This was also my first editing job with Sony Vegas. I'm quietly making improvements behind the scenes.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Thanks! I just noticed that in your shownotes. Must expand and read next time :) Good job on the editing. Sony Vegas is a pretty good editing software. Hope to see more videos!

  • @tnoutdoors9 there's very few videographers ( or gun channels ) I follow with so much interest, and you're one of them.

You look to have many hidden aces and sometimes, you show a new one.

Studio lights ( amateur photograper? ) suits & tie ( OMG you're a fed!!11 ) great filming skills, and a soft spot for perfection.

    Glad I subscribed.

  • Keep doing what you are doing!! Big thumbs up!

  • I really enjoy watching all your test video's very concise and informative. Great job.

  • lol @ kenyata...maybe a cruise missile...good job TN...plenty of damage to me

  • Great test, Ranger t's is where its at tho :)

  • Great test!

  • I never see that stuff, I'm lucky to find Remington hollow points. Good test! :)

  • I keep my XD 45 compact loaded with these, Thanks for the test.

  • well done sir, thanks much

  • Will you ever buy calibrated ballistics gel?

  • @perspicacity89

I don't see a need for it given how the SIM-TEST is working out so far. And it's just not practical for me....cost, storage,one-time use, etc.

  • this result is poor... not a ammo i will buy.... not enough damage

  • @kenyata it is a 45 it is better then any bitch ass 9mm. dont worry about it . those rounds go in like a quater and go out like a dinner plate

  • @xxbryan715xx

    A 9mm may expand but, a .45 won't shrink.

  • @Evilliboba haha a 9mm expanded is about the samesize as a 45 that has not ben shot

  • @kenyata

Hey, just curious.....what type of damage would you anticipate from a big subsonic slug through heavy cloth? Personally, I thought the dual stretch cavities were impressive. In fact, they closely resembled those in a photo of ballistic gel with various handgun calibers that has been floating around the interwebs for several years.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Can we both agree that a unbounded 230g Golden Saber will do way more damage pluss a bigger expansion than this round..?

  • @kenyata No, now stop talking. Your idea for what passes as acceptable ammo is way over inflated to the point where it borders on ridiculous

  • @bigboss686 Yes, take your ignorance elsewhere.

  • @Garuda1337 LOL my spelling is beyond reproach, you troglodyte. What's the matter with you? Get up on the wrong side of mommy's basement this morning? My opinion is based on research by Dr. Gary Roberts, you might have heard of him, what with him being the nation's foremost expert on LE ballistics testing. ammo(.)ar15(.)com/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/index(.)htm There, now you don't have to continue living in ignorance. BTW if you're not swift enough to get it. Get someone to read it to you

  • @bigboss686 My bad, I meant to send that message to Kenyata.

  • @kenyata

Haven't tried that round yet, but I certainly will, then we can compare. There is always a balance between penetration vs. expansion, and there will continuously be debate over which is most preferred. Obviously, I want the highest degree of both. Given a choice, I'll take penetration over expansion, regardless of caliber. A bullet that overexpands and loses momentum may not reach vitals, which is the primary objective. Thanks for the ammo suggestion.

  • @tnoutdoors9 I understand what ur saying, but at the same time you don't want a round that gunna just buss right trough a target.. the average human body is no more than 10 inches from front to back..

but yess im looking forward to more of ur videos.

  • @kenyata Well if that is case, you really don't want the Golden Sabres then. GS had a terrible record on effective expansion an shed their jacket often. Also, it may be true that the average human body is only about 10 inches thick but there are other extenuating factors, which is one of the reasons why the FBI gold standard is 12 inches of penetration. Here, you might find this link helpful ammo(.)ar15(.)com/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/index(.)htm

  • @bigboss686 You are right, i myself seen couple of Golden Saber ammo test on youtube that resulted in jacket separation . But i always asked myself if the jacket is gunna separate after the round penetrated the body, meaning 2 wound channels or will the jacket separate before it penetrates the body. in my opinion the unbounded Golden Saber is the most brutal .45 round out there.

  • @kenyata I must admit that I'm curious where exactly you get your high regard for the Golden Saber in 45? I don't recall seeing a test for it on YT and most of the tests I've read on it were only average or slightly above.

Far as separation if the jacket stays in one piece I don't think it's much of an issue, provided that the lead core shows significant expansion like cor-bon's PowRball. BTW jacket separation doesn't make two holes, the jacket follows the lead core through the same hole

  • @tnoutdoors9 Another great test as always, thank you man. I may have to give this ammo another look. Considering that it seems to have worked quite well out of the 1911.

Given your previous test I had written it off as an acceptable load ( might still be unacceptable in a shorter barrel) but I think I'll give it another look, at least in full-size 1911 platforms anyway.

BTW since the retest of this went so well any chance you'll retest the PDX1 9 mm 124 grain +P in the future?

  • @bigboss686

Yes, several loads from the wetpack days will line up for their shot at SIM-TEST. Plus alot of new stuff.

  • @kenyata that was not a poor result at all

  • I think I'll get some of that ammo for my home defense weapon.

  • Sweet. Lovin' the 1911

  • Good round, love the .45acp. Great vid.

  • awesome 1911!
