does ability to shred pick depend partially on the thickness of the pick you use? I can play fast legato stuff but as much as i try i cant get the hang of shred picking. keep in mind ive tried everything! its something that would be cool to do even though technically i dont need to be able to do it. ANY POINTERS? is part of it having the physical gift if you will, like better structure in your hand??

Try a jass 3 pick. hard pick. i know thats what a lot of shred players use... i used it on my shitey rendition of "fives" by Guthrie Govan, it does the trick pretty good.

the thicker the pick the harder it is to pick very fast, thick picks are for strumming and thinner picks make it a lot easier to alternate pick. I recommend using 0.60mm picks (jim dunlop are best) and paul gilbert uses those, i use them too and it is a lot easier to play fast (or shred) then with the thicker picks i used to use. Trust me try those .60mm picks it helps a lot and practice everyday youll eventually play like paul gilbert.... hope it helps =DDDDD rock on!!!

thanks for the tip! I switched to thin picks and I'm getting use to them. I'm finding I still have to work out some fast lines but I have much more control and there's less pick to stumble on. I would love to play like paul gilbert. I practice religiously, but hopefully at the end of the day i can play like me! :) thanks again.

do you use alternate or economy picking? I personally think alternate is the way to go, although economy was easier for me to pick up at first. my advice is play slowly first and focus on using your wrist only for the picking, then build up your speed :)

I always use economy picking when necessary, but I do a lot of pull offs and hammer ons. I tried building up speed but I also found to play faster runs it seems like you really have to have an exact idea where to go, and being a jazz guitarist you never know where you're going to go until that moment comes...so that presents yet another obstacle in the musical journey! thanks for your help.

not a problem :) If your really dedicated to playing this kind of style, it might be worth trying some alternate picking. If your worried about losing your current picking technique, dont worry, I switched from economy to alt and I find I can still economy pretty easy :) Most shredders in the style of Paul use alternate picking

Alternate picking is basically just an up down up down motion, you never pick in the same direction twice.

economy picking is where you ovoid "over picking" Its actually quite hard to explain in text form :) if you want you can do a search to get what I mean. Thats cool, I too started when I was 12 :D
