  • I always assumed Lake played the opening riff on the 13th and 14th frets, but watching the ELP 1992 Albert Hall video, it looks like he plays (on a 4-string) the upward part of riff at the 8th fret and the rest of it on the 14th. Which looks kinda like what you're doing.

  • What notes are you playing at the beggining? is it F - A# - D# - A# - G# - E - B - F# ??? Thanks and you are a very great player

  • @Wayavas1337

If I recall correctly, it's written in Eb - you might be able to find the sheet music online. We had an old copy of the Tarkus sheet music years ago. So:

F - Bb - Eb - Bb then Ab - Eb - Bb then Fb - Cb - Gb was how it was written. I screw it up multiple times when I attempt to add some notes to the descending part - so there's some 16th notes in there. Used to get yelled at for that all the time (ask ljbanjar - he was the drummer back then). I just noteworthy'd it if you want it

  • @ajawam Thanks a lot for your respone. I still think you do it good.

  • Hi, Great bass line I've enjoyed... hope you, too, for my SOLO GUITAR version!

  • I sure you get asked this all the time, but do you have the tabs to this. Your the only person on youtube i can find that plays this the same way as Greg Lake, all the bass tabs I've found have it played differently.

  • Pretty damn good fancy playing there. Wow

  • wow... i just picked up a bass and i hope to be playing awesome stuff like you very soon!

  • Holy Crap!

  • Very nice! Thank You!

  • Wow... Amazing stuff. Thanks very much

  • Sounds delicious with a fretless.

  • BTW, thanks for the link on your page of the solo acoustic version - that's amazing...

  • Yes, in fact right after I posted the vid... he sent me a better version of the audio but at the time I couldn't get it to replace just the audio on this vid.

He rocks - def. got that fire to it. That's what attracted me to do it. I t was interesting learning his style, the one rest was a bit hard to nail. His is a bit more dramatic than the orig.

Love to do a few gigs with him if he ever comes to the states...

  • What a fantastic example of Youtube collaboration! Have you ever heard from Mauro?

Eruption is one of my favorite tunes, but some (not all) of the piano solos on YT lose a bit of the energy. (...I'm still working on my own... stay tuned). You knock it dead here though, and really enhance Mauro's superb interpretation! What a great mix of precision and viruosity on top of driving rock energy. Bravo!

  • yea, this version sounds rally good

  • Beautiful Job! Never saw it played with the fingers before!

  • ELP is better and older than Van Halen, Tarkus. 1971 is the best album to me.

  • dude you missed a note and anyway where did you learn to play banjo if not from me??? check out the forest road myspace page and be my friend the song i really want to see you play again is gates of delirium complete with hallucinations now that would be somethin...

  • good, you are right greg lake it' s onre of the better bass player, wondrefull ELP

  • Hmm I never thought about picking this using my thumb. I use a pick because that's how Greg plays it but you play it interestingly here.

  • Yea, more like banjo picking I suppose. It allows me to do a bit more than a typical hammerstroke.

I played for years with a pick, back in the day (1975) on a Rick 4001; the band I was in did a lot of Yea, Kansas, ELP. We used to lug a console piano, a B3/leslie, and a mellotron to gigs.

Looking back at it, that was nutz... but fun.

  • I guess the best way to put this is that I'm playing what I feel... you may agree or not, but that's how I feel it.

And it evolves. For instance I've never even met the guy I'm playing along with - I just saw his piano vid on Utube and felt what you hear...

I did play this years ago in a band, but that was a different time, different place... I played it differently I'm sure.

  • Thing is, for me, this is easy. To me it's as easy as conversing. In fact, the

nicest part I play on this is at the end.

As you develop as an artist, it becomes apparent that what you see (hear) in

your minds eye is not always what you get. Look how many MILF's go and buy the Bob Ross "Paint like Bob" lessons and still can't make a "happy tree"

He spent some ungodly amount of time painting happy trees.

  • there is an easier way to play this

  • anyone got a tab for this.....i cant figure this out

  • @sidbolero Well I play it on the 13th fret going up and down then switch over to the 14th fret coming back down on the last notes, if that helps any.

  • Yep - you'd be right... I don't play the part like Lake does...

  • a modern rendition of the famous intro...my brother used to play it note for note, he used to say that Greg was playing like no other (impossible music!!)...I like yr approach, as well

  • This is really awesome, but some of the notes sound really out of tune. Also, watching someone play this makes it seem much more difficult than I had ever believed it was. This is my Favorite ELP song

  • Wow!

  • Hey ajawam ...

What amp are you using? Also, have you trying the Streamer Rock bass? if so, what do you think?

    Great playing by the way!

  • Yes...

  • is this a fretless bass?

  • like i said before great!

I wouldnt say that if it was some music junk

but ELP is the bet choice.!

    Well done!
