I think this is good enough to have gotten some radio play in '64, although it probably didn't. I guess we didn't need fake Beatles as long as we had the real ones being played constantly, which was the way we wanted it.
More Beat, Mod, and Garage videos!: -THE BEATTLE-ETTES -"ONLY SEVENTEEN" (1964) -THE BOOTLES- "I'LL LET YOU HOLD MY HAND" (1964) -JACQUELINE TAIEB- "7:00 AM" (1966) -THE WHAT FOUR-"I'M GONNA DESTROY THAT BOY" (1966) -JEANNIE & THE BIG GUYS- "I WANT YOU" (1964) -TONI McCANN-"SATURDAY DATE" (1966) -PATTI'S GROOVE- "IT WON'T LAST LONG" (1966) -THE BIRDIES- "THE HUCKLEBUCK '65" (1965) -NIKKI & THE CORVETTES-"Girls Like Me/ Let's Go" (1980) -THE BROOD -"I Need You There/ I'll Put You Down" (1988)
Of course The Girls In The Garage series does a great job documenting the 60s garage girl groups.
In 2007, keep an eye on The Love Me Nots from Phoenix, AZ. They mix 60s garage girl with surf and punk. Haven't seen this kind of avant garde energy since the New Wave era. If they don't get a Target commercial spot, I'd be surprised.
Novapup2001 is right; I just saw the Love Me Nots perform here in San Francisco and they were magnificent! Check out their "Hold Me Tight" video here on YouTube. Or their MySpace page, 'Luvmenots'.
There were surely girls rockin' back then, but they were never on the radio in Europe, nor in the charts, they were just written about. The Bootles I do remember, from a newspaper, not airplay. (proof: febr. 7 1964 I was glued to my radio with a report of the btales ' arrival in the USA). Yeah yeah !!
That is how I remember them, too. They were written up in the U.S. -- I think I saw their photo and story in Parade Magazine. However, their songs were never played on the radio.
And you thought there were no GIRL bands around back then! Move over GO's Go's, Bangles..cause there were other Girls already rockin it up before you came along!

I first read about this song back in the 80s, but I never actually heard it until now. It's a lot better than I expected.
