OH, you didn't mention the sense of humor that the game has! This game doesn't quite break the fourth wall, but it never takes its own adventure seriously. It's almost as if it understands its own silliness. Yet, even it's comedic points don't take away from the sense of peril you have when facing the bosses. It really is a superbly balanced game that is hard to match with any game from any generation.

I really liked Star Tropics 2. It was in many ways a good progression from the first game. It just wasn't quite as good, mainly because it used the time traveling as a forced plot device and did not have the means to generate the same nostalgic feel in an original fantasy island setting.

The first game also had the advantage of surprise. I had no idea that the game would end with aliens in space- OH and Uncle Steve's letter! That aspect to the game is ireplicable!!!

The only thing I didn't like about this game is that in later stages you essentially only got one life. If you died, you'd start with so little energy, it would be nearly impossible to continue, and replenishing your life was incredibly difficult. Also if you used any neccesary items they wouldn't be back, so some bits were impossible if you had to do it again after dying.
