This is actually the original ending and it was released like this in most of the world.

The North American distributor didn't like this ending and forced them to shoot a happy ending specifically for North America. That's the alternate ending where he comes back to the present just fine.

I hate this ending. Not because of the ending itself, but it's established at the beginning of the movie, it's in 1300 AD. Each drop of the potion is supposed to make a man sleep for 100 years. Ash ended up taking seven drops. Therefore, shouldn't he wake up in 2000, only 20 years after the original Evil Dead? Six drops would land him in 1900 AD, a full 80 years BEFORE the Evil Dead. Unless England was destroyed in 20 years, there's a big problem with this ending.

Um... I thought it said in the beginning of the movie that it was "somewhere around 1300 AD".... doesn't that mean for all intensive purposes that it could be 1380? and apocalyptic scenes are always a quick visual aid for showing what for us always seems like a probably outcome.

Oh ok you didn't make that clear. That's pretty odd. IMDB says Ash was in the year 1300 so you would be correct that 6 drops would have led him to wake up in 1900. So why would they old man tell him to take 6 drops then? Is IMDB wrong? Or did Ash in the film clearly say he was in 1300... maybe he was in 1390. It would make a lot more sense.

My friend said it best, Ash isn't a ripe melon. He probably thought it was around 1300 AD because of everyone's attire. If we assume that Ash was pulled in the portal in '87 when evil dead II came out, then it would likely be 1387. They may have said 1300 in ED2 not sure. So Ash drinking 7 drops would put him in 2087 or even 2090 as you said which is more believable that a nuclear war/disaster occured. I think IMDB put out what the studio stated as the premise, they don't analyze like us fans.

When I read the thing about Indiana Jones, all I pictured was Shia LeDouche trying to be Ash, and part of me died on the inside. I really hope they don't make another Evil Dead. I'd hate for this series to go mainstream. I watched this film in the late 90s on VHS in South Korea, and they had this ending. I wasn't aware of the Mart ending until I saw the DVD recently.

I like this ending a lot better, maybe because this is the first ending I saw, but also because this easily sets up Evil Dead 4 if there's one.

Yeah, THIS was the original ending. It was rejected cause test audiences felt it was too 'depressing' or something like that. I think both work, but Bruce Campbell stated he prefers this one.

The TV version of AoD is the best of them all(except for edited swears) because it uses all of the extra footage from the directors cut and has the S-Mart ending. I don't mind this ending, but if there will never be another Evil Dead, I think poor Ash deserved a happy ending.
