Somehow I don't think this is 1978...it's probably from their 1974 tour, especially if that is David Palmer on tambourine. The overlays could be mislabelled.
So many great songs and bands in the 70's, grateful I saw the whole decade live! This is a great song..if you put me in a strait jacket I still couldnt sit still when it's playing! Thanks for posting!!!
Elliot Randall, a friend of Dias, played the solo on the album. Fagan and Becker answered an ad that Dias made looking for a bass and keyboard player with "jazz chops" to join his band and that band evolved to become Steely Dan.
@sdmestayer FINALLY SOMEONE KNOWS THE TRUTH. i try to tell everyone how denny and skunk founded the dan, naming it after the 18 wheeler they dreamed of one day owning. they filled out the lineup with two other proud southern men, david palmer and jim hodder, with the intent of restoring rock and roll to its confederate roots. but we all know the rest. fagen and becker bought the band, screwed the poor southern men who built it, and turned it into a musak contractor. the civil war all over again
@newfuckingwave I wouldn't go that far. "Steely Dan" was named by Fagan and Becker after a dildo in the book "Naked Lunch" by Edgar Rice Burroughs . It is true that Fagan and Becker sort of hijacked Denny Dias's early pre-Steely band but Steely Dan itself was really always a vehicle for performing and recording Fagan and Becker's songs and not about Fagan and Becker writing music for the band Steely Dan to record.
@Hgclaw you see, he can't even get his names right. it's time to stop ignoring the truth. forget area 51, jfk assassination, 9/11, nwo, or illuminati conspiracy theories - the truth of the founding of steely dan is the most repressed piece of information in our world today. you can go on believing the lies that the fagen and becker-controlled media feeds you, or you can do as i have and look to the oppressed southern man for the real answers
This is most certainly not '78, more likely '73... David Palmer was gone by '74 (and Skunk, Jim Hodder soon thereafter)... also '74 was the last tour before they stopped playing live. They didn't start touring again until '93.
I think this performance was filmed in 1973. I think it appears on an OGWT DVD compilation as being 1978 as that it when it was shown on that programme.
Jeff Baxter (guitar) Walter Becker (bass) David Palmer (tambourine) Jim Hodder (drums) Denny Dias (Guitar) Donald Fagan (Keyboard and Vocals)
@MrFreezexx You're right. By 1978, Becker/Fagan were a studio-only group. Skunk was with the Doobies, Dias did some limited work with Steely Dan and Hodder and Palmer were on to other projects.
Left to right is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter Guitar, Walter Becker Bass, David Palmer Vocals (I think), Denny Diaz Guitar, Donald Fagan Keyboard and Vocals. Not sure about the drummer.
This is circa 1972-73 since "lead" singer David Palmer (here on tamborine) only appeared on their debut LP "Can't Buy a Thrill". Also, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (lead guitar) left in '74 to join The Doobie Brothers, as well as the others following since Donald Fagen and Walter Becker decided to end touring.
Nice vid thanks! couldn't have been later than 1974 though -the Whistle Test date is wrong-maybe they broadcast it in 1978? the Steely Dan 'band' (playing here) was dissolved in 1974. Fagen and Becker continued Steely Dan as a studio project till 1980, then broke up/took 13 years or so off. Guessing this is from 1973, as I've seen other clips with this band lineup from around then. Also they had let the 'lead singer" (playing the tambourine here) go by 1974 iirc..
I think thier harmonies are brilliant,I love watching them,.they certainly enjoying themselves.

@newfuckingwave Wrong. The band is named after the dildo in Naked Lunch. Fagen and Becker started the band fresh out of college.
