  • now I have to find @im18iswear1000 's comment...

  • Hi rebecca.. Thanks for your help. For how long do you think i should practice these exercises every time? 5 minutes or more? And for how long i should keep practising . One month or more. Another question please: i bought the American accent book as you advised in another video.. Do you think that is enough or not. The last question: i have little chance to practice speaking with native speakers, is there any online club i can involve with to practice my english.. Many many thanks

  • @aliaea Hi Aliaea, if you are referring to our "Guide to Speaking American English with Confidence & Clarity," this is the guide we use with all of our clients. When you purchase a self study package, I also analyze your speech based on a diagnostic, so take the diagnostic and return it to me for analysis if you haven't done that already - that's key. You need to focus on your specific issues in the right order to get result. Feel free to email me directly for more details.

  • rebecca--first of all its clear you help folks ok--but at the five minute mark youre very pointed and sexy tongue emerges--youve gotta know that licking youre lips is very seductive to men--also its highly erotic--acting naive and calling people "a child" for thinking so is criminal..ive had this video saved onto my real player since day one for youre lip licking--i have a perfect amaerican accent didnt need help there--but it did help me do something else 28 times and counting..thanks...

  • @deppleo1 You can turn anything into anything, but mouth stretches are designed to help those with foreign accents acquire American Accents ... if you want something more, I'm sure there are far BETTER videos out there for that than this one!

  • @rebeccalinquist youre tongue is truly a masterpiece--its the way you utilize it--jus saying--it actually got me to watch all youre vids--ur sucha gorgeous woman..rawrrrrr---when you lick youre lips my heart jumps out

  • @1SOTODANIEL I don't think I can type it in as a URL here in YouTube (it doesn't allow typed in websites), but it's at the end of all my videos.

  • @CreativeZedDotCom ... You don't need a long tongue for an american accent... I dont have a very long tongue and I have a pretty good american accent. (It helps that im american)

  • @strangerpenguin I was just kidding. I don't want to have an American accent or any other accent for that matter. I want to keep it neutral.

  • Hi Rebeca, do you have any coachs in Montreal?

love everyth u r doing, it's amazing & yes these execises work well

  • I hate american accent!

  • For how many minutes a day am I supposed to do these exercises?

  • @Vik13vik I usually customize exercises for clients that they do 5-10 minutes 3 times per day - it really depends on your specific speech issues. We generally combine articuation exercises with resonance & breathing. Hope that helps! If you'd like to work with a Coach, come to our website!

  • MUSTA MU?? KAILA MU KNSA KU? TRAINING TA KARUN,! HOPE WE COULD SPEAK BETTER IN ENGLISH NOW,....... PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT BUT NOBODY IS PERFECT , SO WHY STILL PRACTICING?

  • @getaloneful Let's make fun of syllogism:

First Premise: Practice makes perfect. (Wrong! It should be correct practice makes perfect).

Second Premise: Nobody is perfect. (Perfect here means different from the perfect in the first premise).

Conclusion: So why still practice.(Since there is no relation between the first premise to the 2nd premise...and no deduction or inference can be made the conclusion is obviously wrong.)

I'm just making fun of logic my friend, not you...

  • @Vik13vik

  • thanks but is there is any proof

  • @SBLEOO Is your question proof that mouth exercises work? I would just say try them and see if they help you - they are not useful for everyone, and if your jaw hurts or makes a noise, stop doing them!

  • @rebeccalinquist thanks for reply..i will do these steps everyday..coz i had a tongue tie operation when i was a kid.. and whenever i speak fast my tongue gets twisted..

  • i like to use the mouth... i'm a self sucker.

  • Hi Rebecca,

Glad that you've posted a video to educate us on the use of American Accent. Not sure if you've heard of Singapore but I've a pretty strong Singaporean accent (my first language is English). Feeling kinda apprehensive as I'm heading down to the states this coming fall semester and worry if American won't be able to understand me. Hope you can advise me on this.

PS: I speak English since the day I was born.

  • Hi Rebecca!

I'd like to thank you for posting your videos online as they help me a lot. Even when I just watch them and try to repeat what you are saying I feel my speech becoming clear. I want the changes to become permanent and I tried to do articulation exercises, but I think I'm overdoing them and my accent gets worse. I don't understand whether the exercises themselves are not good for me (I'm Ukrainian/Russian who just moved to Canada) or this is just a normal transition period?

    Thanks

  • @bi9bu9 There is a transition period, but it's best to have a Coach help you so you know that you are pronouncing the sounds correctly ... visit my website and request a consultation with one of our coaches!

  • Hi Rebecca! Your video is amazing! I'll definitely spend some time watching these! I wanted to ask you a couple of questions that intrigues me. How do you find it for a brazilian to be most challenging in getting rid of difficult articulated words and pronunciation, thus improving their accent? (I'm brazilian). Moreover, my question is to understand as well how other languages can be like these or not.

  • @nahclara It's been awhile since I worked with a Brazilian, but a couple of things I remember are voicing issues (when you use a vibrated vs a voiceless consonants) like easy with a /z/ not an /s/, and for some Brazilians, not putting a vowel in between the root and the /ed/ endings in a word like "changed" - it would be pronounced "change ED" instead of "changd" (just a /d/, no schwa or short /i/). Those are a couple of things I remember ... I think the /r/ is challenging too.

  • @rebeccalinquist I recognize these problems as you say and I've recognized it on my speech in a few words (specially that I work with kids they also call my attention for a few of these). But I've got a different question, how come when people sing usually they are "accentless"?

  • i am a native

  • who is she reffering as a native? is it british ? sorry just curious hehe

  • @MrDickheadsman I'm referring only to American English - I don't teach any British dialects.

  • Comment removed

  • If you hear clicking in your jaw, discontinue the exercises and see a dentist for TMJ.

  • Wow, thank you, you're amazing! It's quite hard though. And I'm constantly hearing clicking in my jaw, maybe should visit a doctor :///

  • ..

  • these exercisers are not easy like its looked

  • Comment removed

  • tnx for the vid 8 helps:)

  • ur funny

  • You move your lips while speaking? Wow, now I learn to speak more clearly by moving the lips. Now I lessen my slurs with such techniques.

  • How often do you recommend the exercises to done? Daily how many times?

  • @kukulkan07 I do a whole series of these kinds of exercises with clients - starting with simple ones and gradually moving to ones that require more prolonged vocal vibration - several times a day and then increasing the length depending on which specific vocal issues you have - and then clients focus in their improvement areas for a longer period of time during practice - using 10 minutes a time.

  • Wow this vid is really helpful... however sometimes i am demotivated by people in my workplace whenever i'm speakin' with american accent. They just could not accept it...They will be more kinda accepting speaking english with a Malaysian way. I'm Malaysian anyway... :(

  • Wow! You seem like an awesome teacher! I am a non-native American English speaker, but when I came to the States everybody thought I was raised there, but I still have my "gaps". Hopefully I will learn something from this and perfect my accent.

    PS: You look good.

  • @TheGraal oh so where are you from then?

  • @Micromusecut I am from Romania (Europe). Thanks for asking.

  • my lips pull further to the right side than my left side, will just stretching the weaker side of my mouth help?

  • Rebecca, my apology for a very late response. No, I didn't worked in Telus, Philippines. T'was at Global Contact Services International. Right now I am out of that company after THEY scammed our Account. I am now working in the Government focusing on Peace Process. Still don't know if I will still go back in the Call Center industry. Yet this helped me a lot. Just ignore others who criticize this. For us who are not an American, this helped us s lot for learning. Keep up the good work!

  • @folksybloke Thanks for the vote of confdence!

  • Cute instructor

  • I like this class, but I makes me wanna kiss that gurl on the vid

  • Keep clicking here "4:54"

  • OMG...rebecca im not rying to be weird--but from 4:57 till 6:15 I was in heaven--youre tongue is amazing--lol the lip licking was outta this word...wow ****gasps for breath**** ty also youre eyes are gorgeous

  • I only hear from the left side of my earphones

  • I wish she gave me a blow job

  • @TheDavid2313 omfg me toooooo!

  • You can't improve an American accent - it;s shit!

  • thank you for sharing this video.. hehe

  • ican t extent my tougue very well... its kinda short than yours

  • ican t extent my tougue very well... its kinda short than yours

  • @rebeccalinquist Yes I understand that now. I tried learning an Austrailian Accent, and boy is it Challenging. I know what you mean now. Very good intructions. (:

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • boringggg

  • ha if your not american its kind of odvious! you get tought all of this if you enter this

country LEGALLY!!!! imigrants are fine, but stop those illeagals!

  • That was excellent. My mouth feels 'tight' when I speak and these excercises are just what I am looking for.

Let me add that you look and sound fantastic. Very attractive.

  • Whaaaad' up Guys? Nah; Just kiddin'. " Is that really what American's say? " Nope! So I'm 14 & , I don't know how I stumbed upon this video, considering I have an American Accent, I never really realized that we move our mouths alot? Actually, we don't. I can not move my lips at all and still have a Perfect American Accent, maybe because it's my Natural Accent? & Negative to people who believe we sound "nasally"? Uhh, okay? I mean yeah when we have a cold or something? Anyways thanks! (: Caitlyn

  • @caitlynchristine333 As a native speaker, you don't need to ... but what if you tried to learn another language? You might to exaggerate to get the right sound quality ... get it?

  • @caitlynchristine333 your totally right. I dont know what this woman degree is in phonetics, but my teacher has PHD in lenguages, and he says american dont move their mouth too much, which is the opposit to latin american people that move it a lot to talk; however, these exercises are helpfull because I have practiced them, and they really warm your mouth so that you would articulate sounds easier.

  • @caitlynchristine333

you dont realise that we move our mouths alot because its what we're used to as americans. compared to other languages we do moves our mouths alot. COMPARATIVELY. it think you should trust her, it is her area of study...

  • I've never liked the American accent , sounds lazy and nasally and so annoying.

  • is this language lessons or a blow job? I can't speak Gringo, but goddam, I can give great head.

  • HAAHHAHAHAHHAHAAHHHHAHAHA

  • Great video. As non-native speaker it may help to maste American and perhaps Irish to a certain extent. Much easier to master an English or Aussie accent.

  • I have a typical midwest american accent and it's werid to watch this lol, does this really help people who are trying to speak like an american???

  • actually it's bullshit that the american accent has more mouth movements than "foreign" languages, in fact, I think, quite the contrary. I always get the feeling the average americans have their jaws pretty much closed while speaking...

  • Aiii woood laaikee to have a Hhambudder.. :P

  • this is the only video that the captions actually work on lol.

  • I LOVE AMERICAN ACCENT AND I LOVE YOUR VOICE TOO, but I don't usually practice pushing the lips forward and keeping them backward like the way you suggest.

  • Comment removed

  • For people from any language, not just you native Americans, the use of the mouth muscles depends mostly on personal characteristics, interest, speech speed and pitch, emphasis etc. It doesn't necessarily mean that people with standard american accent all use the mouth muscles so much like the way you suggest.

  • The mouth is part of human speech organism. I agree with you that the movement of the mouth does have a certain affect on how we sound.

To me, the mouth, however, doesn't have much to do with accent like the way you suggest for practice.

  • @rebeccalinquist thank u very much baby ...you help me a lot...;-)

  • sounds like the begining of half life 1

  • Awesome videos, Mrs Linquist! I'm checking bunch of videos now on YouTube to improve my American Accent. This video helped me to prove, that my friends are wrong, too. They were always laughing at me how I pronounce YouTube. I showed them this video and they shut their mouths:-)

  • I was searching on web about the differences about american accent and british. Your videos are perfect! I was doing all the mouth exercise together with you. Thanks a lot for your time. You are very precious for non-speaker English language.
