Um, who says this Rufus fellow can sing? Keane's version of this with Tom's singing rules over ths. There's no saying this voice is better than Tom Chaplin of Keane.
@angelwz73 umm, definetely not, that's like saying will ferrell is a better actor than anthony hopkins..no way in hell. Rufus dwarfs Tom in singing. He is Soo much more soulful. and it's his song, not Tom's.
@angelwz73 I mean, I like Keane, as a band, but there are a lot of singers who have a soft voice. It doesn't make them good singers. However, hardly anyone sounds like Rufus. You may not like him, but he is authentic.
It's ALL about that bit. He must have got drunk after writing that because that is one of those marriages of music and lyrics that happen all too rarely. On Want, there is so much emotion in that bit that you could swim in it.
Is this singing? Is this piano playing? Good grief...it's groaning and klumping trying to pass as music. Somewhere, there are lyrics, but the mumbeling delivery obscures their meaning. Give the guy credit for nerve. To his hearing-challanged supporters he is king because he is only tone-deaf.
Rufus has a beautiful voice, it's so deep and smooth, I'm hypnotized. How can this be called not singing? The words are so steady and emotional, the piano is understated and perfect. Thomes doesn't know music, RW is amazing!!!
Wow. Landed here following a Keane link, as I'm obsessed at the moment, but I'm completely blown away. Knew R. Wainwright of course, but not this song. What a beautiful man, beautiful song, beautiful voice, beautiful piano. I'm delighted that he's asked Keane to cover it, if that is true. Haven't listened to the cover yet, not sure I dare to now. Although Chaplin's voice never lets me down, and has got me in tears many times, it would be difficult to match the raw emotion for obvious reasons.
Wonderful singer song writer and if Elton John makes the comment that at the moment he is the best singer song writer around at this moment in time then maybe we should listen.
i'm really mad that tom chaplin or whatever his name is did a version of this. it's rufus' song about his dad! it only is meaningful when rufus sings it. and tom's voice just isn't strong enough for it. rufus is one of the rare singers who are brilliant on cd and live. I have so much respect for him.
first of all, KEANE did a cover, Tom Chaplin being the lead singer. Secondly, if you listen to Keane you would known that Tom's voice is actually stronger than Rufus's in most songs but he tried to take a softer edge for Dinner at Eight. And third the band wasn't trying to match Rufus's cover, they did it because it's one of their all time favorite songs and he's one of their all time favorite musicians. so there's nothing really to be mad about
rufuse he is the one who asked tom to do this cause he know if tom sing it ,, will be more great ,, and that nice thing from tom ,, and rufus sing keane song too .. they are a friend and rufus as he said one from keane's fan .... I love this song
One of the most touching songs ever written - Rufus Wainwright should be right up there with the likes of Elton John etc - faboulous voice, talented musician and wonderful songwriter - I have only recent discovered Rufus's music and I am hooked - he deserves a wider audience.
keane is my favourite band and i really like their version, but i agree rufus's has more emotion since he wrote it and lived the story and everything. its a great song no matter what
I saw the interview where he described where this song came from, it just sounds better when you can feel the emotion and history behind it. But I'll go listen to the covers...always interesting!
I really like this version, but I also love Keane's. I have to say they are both equal in my mind. While Rufus knows the song better, he doesn't enunciate his words quite like Tom. Rufus is talented musically no doubt, but I think Tom is the better singer.
I never said he was a bad speaker. I just think Tom Chaplain has a better singing style. Still, I still like Wainwright and respect him as a musician.
This is a beautiful performance. no other version will ever compare. no one will sing it with the emotion that Rufus does.he has an amazing voice and this is such a beautifully written song. thank you for posting this.
I would not say that...I think that this is with real sensitivity, Keane just sings it OK, but the original is perfect, because he knows what it is about...
So powerful.

Such a meaningful song that tugs at the heart. his feeling about his childhood must be so deeply etched and very painful.
But it is one of his most beautiful songs to date. As someone said down the list " you could swim in the emotion". I love it.
