  • Magnificent!!!! And, as someone said "flawless".

  • John is absolutely amazing as a tenor, I dread to think who you critiques would rather have singing this piece.......

I am not technical, but the sheer strength and tone of voice are one of a kind, I would know his voice anywhere...some imbecile on youtube decided to remove 'so when the glitt'ring queen of night' with Ainsley singing, nobody could ever sing it better.......sorry, NOBODY.

Someone please post it, or I shall when my Pinnock cd arrives!!!

  • Okay, I want to jump this MAN'S bones...

  • Excellent!

  • I think this was flawless!!!!

  • This is excellently done and flawless is exactly the right word to use concerning this performance !

  • I can see there are a lot of critics in here. I like him just fine. Perhaps any of you would like to post a video of yourselves (not someone else), showing us how it's done?

  • When is this, and with which choir/orchestra?

  • .... If it were a hair slower, but you just have to listen to it to hear that much of this version is aspirated.

  • @countered orb I suggest you listen again. It isn't aspirated throughout, but about 70% of it certainly is. I don't doubt that Ainsley could get thought purely from the diaphragm

  • und natürlich ..der Gesang..the same

  • schön das anzuschauen...das Gesicht, sehr ausdrucksvoll

  • It's not technically a coloratura as Ainsley is separating the semiquavers with the breath.. realistically there's no way to sing this with a perfect coloratura at this speed. At least I'd love to hear someone who could.

  • Very well sung, but what's up with the conductor? Train to catch?

  • Too fast! Much like the axiom "just because you can hit a note doesn't mean you should" I say, just because you can singing coloratura extremely fast (by cheating and adding an H in between each note) doesn't mean the tempo of a peace should be that fast. There is virtuosity and musicality, and the latter should always take precedence.

  • @scorwitz It's not as fast as it sounds. Ainsley is deliberately machine gunning the melismatic portions sound it rhythmically sounds faster. Granted, it's much faster than andante lol...I think it's a little more theatrical this way, and more appropriate to giving "bite" to the text, which with the andante tempo doesn't achieve that. I have to disagree, the musicality here is darn good. Phrasing between the orchestra and Ainsley is well done.

  • @StriderBLH Agreed on your description of musicality. What they are doing is musical within the confines of the tempo they have decided to take. I'm saying that the choice to take it THIS fast may not be the best choice musically. Believe me, I am a fan of a brisk Messiah and particularly "Thou Shalt Break Them" makes sense textually, but this tempo has pushed past the boundaries of anything that sounds normal to my ear.

  • @scorwitz Mr. Ainsley does not have aspirated coloratura. I am assuming you are more a fan of the legatissimo style of coloratura. That type of coloratura is inappropriate for most of Handelian works, due to the spiccato (not staccato) happening in the strings.

  • This is sooooooo fast.

  • i literally watch this over and over and over and over and over

  • great tenor!!! gorgeous voice!! the orchestra sounds a bit hysterical for my taste...it doesn't need to go "alla breve" to get into the drama of the piece! ...and the french subtitles on the video are pretty silly!

  • I enjoy these recordings of Ainsley when he was younger, but I prefer more recent recordings, the tone is much more mature.

He makes some great choices for this piece. His technique creates the mood, his timbre gives the music it's color, plus the orchestra is awesome!

  • Who put these idiot French subtitles in the middle of his face?

  • DAMN! All I can say. DAMN!

  • Coloratura? Or tessitura, rather?

  • @UncleTito72

coloratura.... tessitura is where the piece sits in the voice...

  • His vocal agility and coloratura might be impressive but the voice and his high pitches are not. The high G's have flat overtones because he does not fully open the throat and engage the voice no doubt because the tempo is to fast for him to do so!

  • You wouldn't be able to hear all the overtones in a poor quality youtube recording. I think his high A's** are wonderful. They have a beautiful ring, and a very clear focus.

  • I can tell you're the type of person who would tun down a meal prepared by the greatest living chef, because you did not like the color of shirt he wore when he cooked it.

  • YUMMY!

  • That is simply very very good. Flawless vocal agility and colliatura, a both convincing and compelling performance. I challenge anyone to find me a better live looking recording. Awesome.

  • For all the people who are objecting to the coloratura, I think you're thinking that it's kinda bumpy and could be smoother.

I'm sure he's capable of it, but that would have been a mistake on his part, because the aria is actually about the use of violence. I heard a performance of it once with a tenor who was singing very smoothly, and although I admired his ability to do it, the aria really did not work that way!

  • My stoned friend told me to watch this. LOL?

  • Yes, yes, yes

  • Ainsley, thou art simply NEC PLUS ULTRA. Excellent. Although I know you´ll never read this. I´m your fan here in Brazil.

  • Great!! He sings perfectly. Perfecto impecable.

  • wow

  • yeah colorarutra does seem to not excel

  • lol just read that someone said his coloratura sucks?! are we listening to the same guy? hes practically flawless!

  • Like the speed. Great agility.

  • Hermoso!! solo.. perfecto!!

  • nice!

  • sooooo fast!!

  • uh... WOW!

  • This performance is absolutely out of this world - the technique, the voice, the timbre, the expression are outstanding!

This guy eats inferior singers like Bostridge and Padmore for breakfast!

I'm a tenor myself and I watch this video several times a day out of pure admiration.

    Infallible - amazing - unique - PERFECT!

  • Comment removed

  • what you might not know is Ainsley and Bostridge were taught by the same vocal coach. She is a very talented teacher.

  • Who is this miracle teacher that you speak of?

And, more importantly, how do I get her to teach me?

  • Diana something. She used to teach at chicago, but now i believe she teaches at the Royal Academy of Music. Ive heard her cost for Coaching is something like 200 and hour or more.

    Her name is Diane Forlano

  • where...or what is this being profomed??!!!

  • it's the handel messiah's:

He that dwelleth in Heav'n and Thou shalt break them (42 and 43) a tenor's recitative and air just before the great hallelujia

  • definitly kelley hes gay, my voice teacher is firends with him unless your a man too??

  • He gives me the goosebumps! Brilliant! WOW!

  • Woow, amazing performance. This guy's voice and technique are breathtaking. Hmm, there is a lot to learn from him. Thanks for posting this video.

  • Bravissimo!

    Christian

  • Where have I been? This is my first time hearing of this tenor who is in a class all his OWN. I have never heard anything like this. He is SCARY good!!

  • ....please marry me

  • incredible!!!

  • bravo!!!

  • And this aria is the best thing in the work, after Comfort Ye (not including Ev'ry Valley)!!!

  • This music is gorgeous!!!!!!

  • My favorite tenor. There is no one like him. I like him far more than some famous Italian and Spanish tenors. I have the majority of his work.

  • This looks like it's from a DVD. Anyone know which one and where I can get it? This is probably my favorite rendition of the lesser known tenor aria in the Messiah.

  • Stunning!!

  • WHAT?!?

    This is absolutely sick!

John Mark Ainsley is the man!

  • @LetItBe920 What do you mean "sick"?

  • What classical piece is this (composer, opera?). John Mark is my favourite tenor at all. He sings wonderful and his voice is divine.

  • It's Handel, from Messiah :) He is my favorite tenor as well

  • I have to watch/listen to this every day. What a poweful, exciting performance. Brilliant.

  • bravo, the words are so clear and also the coloratura part!

  • I am in love with this guy's voice...OMFG

  • Crazy Runs. I thought "Il Mio Tesoro" had hard runs...this is soo much faster! its good to see tenors in action!

  • @Gajdasi

Well, he takes it pretty fast compared with most other tenors. Check out the bravura version of Mozart's aria 'Fuor del mar'- that's, imo, even harder. Or really, any Rossini tenor aria like Cessa di piu resistere.

  • impresionante john. Pocos tenores tienen la coloratura tan facil a pesar de la velocidad en la que esta tocada la obra. Buenisimo!!!!!!

  • The runs are so precise! Most tenors take it half that speed and still can't sing it! Bravo!

  • exquisit!

  • Finally, this video on youtube. You used to only see it on google. He is truly one of the greatest tenors. If his name doesn't go down in history, then the world will have made a great mistake.

  • Well, I think that what is difficult is that he sings a very specific selection of material. It's mostly oratorios, really, with a couple operas in there. Even with his lyrical sound, I doubt we'd see him in La Boheme or Tosca...maybe in Cosi Fan Tutti. i can see him singing Un Aura Amorosa beautifully. I agree that he is one of the greatest voices I've ever heard...his ability to move his voice so quickly is astonishing. I hope he gets more exposure.
