  • Excellent video!

My driver side hub needs to be replaced but i'll probably to the passenger side too, I know where i'll be getting them from!

  • @x2daz11 Thank you for checking out our auto repair channel on YouTube.

  • That should be fine as long as there isn't a whole lot of force used on the pry bar. You may also want to check your ball joints to see if they are okay. Hope this helps you out.

  • Will it wreck your studs if you use the pry bar as a way to keep the axle from spinning while loosening or tightening the bolts? I have a 1991 Plymouth Laser and it makes a knocking noise only when i turn my wheel all the way to the right, as soon as i depress the clutch it stops. Not exactly sure if its the wheel hub bearing or not? please help, thank you!

  • Great video! I have a '98 Dakota up in the air right now and the 32mm socket does not seem to fit. Too small...nut is in good shape, not rounded, so the 32mm socket 9 for my 1998 Dodge Dakota SLT) should fit ...but it doesn't... Is this normal? I'll logic it up to 34mm and let you know if that works, because if its a 34mm socket, 1AAutoparts might want to review the "Tools needed" page. Or I got a real strange front end. Thanks, You guys are very good and I appreciate the video! keep it up.

  • @ijustgottasaythis It should be the same size as the one shown in our video. Sometimes manufacturers do change the size of the bolt used between model years. We try to provide as much accurate (tool size) information as possible. Thank you for checking out our auto repair videos. Have a great day!

  • @1aauto....THANKS for your help....I have 4 wheel disc brakes, just called the local Dodge dealership where the truck was purchased & provided them with the last 8 of the VIN just to confirm......I JUST ORDERED THE HUBS from your website....107.95....WOW.....THANK YOU!!!!! ~ Jimmy

  • @TheHillbillyRidge Thank you for checking us out Jimmy. Have a great weekend!

  • @1aauto....WOW, just briefly looked up my part on your website....AWESOME PRICES!!! How can I determine if I have 4 wheel disc brakes? I don't see any wires to ANY of the brake calipers....FRONT or REAR....but it does have ABS. Also with my noise I have had my brake light AND abs light come on twice, does that help pin point any problems??? THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your help!!! I will be ordering parts from you when I can determine what is needed. TAKE CARE

  • @TheHillbillyRidge If you remove the rear wheel off of the vehicle, you should be able to see if it has rear disks or drum brakes. Usually you can even see them through the spokes or holes in the wheel.

  • Ok....THANKS for monitoring your video and replying so promptly to all the questions!! THANKS for your advice and expertise. Could it be the axle? Do I have to remove the axle on the Dakota Quad Cab or does the hub just slide off? THANKS A BUNCH!!!! Jimmy

  • @TheHillbillyRidge If the front makes kind of a roaring noise above 30 MPH It might be the hub. The tolerances on some of these new hubs are so tight, that you can't always see if there's play by moving the tire back and forth. This same thing happened on my 04 Grand Cherokee. Once I actually took the hub off I was able to move it with my hand. Hope this helps you out. We sell hubs on our website 1aauto,com If that ends up being the issue.

  • Oh yea....the reason I know something is going bad: I can also hear the rumbling noise going back a dirt road, however that blacktop produces a louder rumble, is this something to be concerned about? I have 4 wheel disc brakes. I have felt the rim and backside area from the side that appears to be making the noise and it isn't even Warm after driving down the highway around 50 mph

  • @TheHillbillyRidge It may be the hub, or you may also want to take a look at the suspension pieces to see if anything is broke or worn out.

  • OK I did all this by the vid. and got all the way to taking it out with the mini sledge and instead of the hub come out as one piece, it did not, it is so rusty that it never move on my hardest swing anyway how do You recommend I get the outer housing off?I tried rust spray, heat, the 3 bolts put in the face side of hub with crowbar in bolts standing on the crowbar jumping to spin it a little to line the bolts on a solid back so i can tight bolt to pull it off or out,ANY HELP PLEASE. THANK YOU.

  • @Dadtothebone33 It should come off just like the video shows. You may want to double check everything to make sure that there isn't anything holding it in place.

  • @1aauto YES I DID IT..Thank You for yall's help and the Video is really good,I ended up taking the knuckle all the way out and put the 3 bolts back in and tighten them down and then back them out about 2-3 turns I put a small metal plate 1/4"thick over all the bolt heads, and put face down on table and a few good slugs with the mini sledge, It came right off... The truck has been in the north allot from NY to Alaska, the only thing holding it was rust and lots of it.

Thanks for your help & Vid

  • @Dadtothebone33 GREAT! Sometimes these things can be a bit stubborn. Glad to hear you made out OK. Have a great day.

  • Hey Im about to replace both front wheel hubs on a 2006 chevy silverado....The original hubs look awfully covered in rust...would you recommend buying brake dust covers also? I just dont want to go to the mechanic, have them take off the hub, and tell me I need additional parts that rusted away.

  • @infringinator You shouldn't need to purchase dust covers.

  • Really appreciate you guys, do you have a video changing the FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS for either a 1993 Dodge Shadow or Dodge Spirit?? Thanks, Thanks!

  • @cburn665 Thank you for visiting our auto repair channel on YouTube. We currently do not have a video for that particular repair. However on most vehicles you need to remove the brake calipers, and the center nut off of the axle. You might need to remove the axel, depending on how easily you can get at the bolts on the backside of the hub. We carry replacement hubs for your Dodge Shadow 93. Here's a link to them on our site. 1aauto.com/1A/wheel-bearing-hub-front/Dodge/Shadow/-/-/1993

  • @1aauto do yall have a video on how to change the driverside spindle/knuckle on a 2000 2wd dakota?

  • @nawfyman1 We currently do not have an auto repair video on this particular repair. We do carry the Haynes repair manuals on our website,it should show you how to repair this particular part. Here's a link to them on our website. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com/1A/repairmanual/Dodge/Dakota/1AMNL00051/220020/2000

  • Replacing the hub is the same thing as replacing the bearing? If you wanted to change just the bearing would you need a press?

  • @TheJeremyCupp On this vehicle the hub and the bearing assembly are one unit. They are not servicable, so you wouldn't need a press, they bolt onto the steering knuckle. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day!

  • OK thanks and have a great holiday!

  • Great video thank you so much! Quick question. Does the axle really have to be removed?

2004 Dakota 4wd 4.7 liter. Humming noise DS front, touch the wheel after highway driving. DS wheel is warm Pass side is not. Thanks Again.

  • @pkupernik It does so that you can get at the bolts on the backside of the hub.

  • Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with the world.

  • is this really a hard thing to do the auto shop wants 325.00 to do this i dont have most of the tools needed can u rent the tools needed are do u think i should just leave it the the mec

  • @mrspanky61 The video shows you everything involved with replacing the hubs on your Dodge Durango. You should be able to use basic hand tools for most of this job.

  • Some part manufacturers have different parts for the right and left side hub assembly. Is there a difference?

  • @chefchriskoz These will interchange between the left and right side. They're not side specific.

  • i had to use a 1" 1/8 th on a 97 geo metro but i cant find the bolts behind the hub. i didnt think of taking the axle out do i need to? also should i or rather do i need to change the hub as well? or can i just swap the bearings? thanks nice video

  • @xxdjcharlierockxx On some vehicles you need to take the axel out to access the bolts that hold the hub on.

  • @1aauto thanks for the reply 1 auto...

  • On the drivers side front wheel on my 04 dodge dakota has a hum to it the last few day. and when going up my driving i hear a low knock as that tire is turned slightly up my driveway. whats do u think it is. it was also a lil hard to turn but that has now stoped

  • @bbigdaddy198294 The huming noise could be a bad wheel bearing. If it makes a popping noise while you turn it could be a bad axle shaft of possible a ball joint.

  • Will my Durango make a grinding noise if I have a bad bearing?

  • @BFMVdrummer It could make a grinding noise. Usually they'll make a howling noise too.

  • I have a 1999 Dakota and the hub nut seems to be pretty tight, what do you recommend we use or to be able to remove the hub nut? My so called "mechanic" tried removing it with a 1/2 inch ratchet wrench and broke the tip right off. We have been waiting on him to tell us what to do, he even mentioned something about having to remove the whole spindle? Would it be necessary? Thanks for the video and I will give this a try with my husband, seems pretty simple to do.

  • @jacobopatty420 You could try to use a breaker bar on an extension on the ratchet to break it free.

  • Quick question, I'm tackling this... this weekend. I've got the 4x4 with 2 wheel ABS... do I need to take the axle out? or is that just something that makes it easier?

  • Thank you so much! I wish all mechanics had the helpfullness you have.

  • Just a heads up for the novices like myself out there. This video shows a 4WD, if your truck is rear wheel, there will be no axle to take off. You will use a 7mm allen wrench instead of the T47 to get the brakes off, and a 36mm socket instead of the 32mm to get your hub nut off. After you take the brake caliper and the rotor off, all you have to do is take off the hub nut, and the bearing slides right off. I was able to get one side done in about 30-45 minutes.

  • For anyone that is disassembling a Dakota or Durango but plan to reuse the hub/bearing unit and easy way to remove it is to loosen the hubs bolts about 3/4 of the way out and then use a hammer to smack the bolt heads. It will force the hub out of it's bore without distorting it. Then you can remove the bolts completely and pull it out.

  • Thanks for this super informative video, I now know what im looking at to repair my dakota

  • @hoodlumatic Glad we could help you out. We sell these bearings on our website 1aauto.com

  • Thanks A LOT for this video. I was able to do both hubs, the first one took me about 5 hours because I was being gentle trying to get the hub off......then I used a 3lb. sledge and a cold chisel and she came off. The second one took me an hour and a half and that was at 9PM after a long day with the family. I did not remove the axles, I turned wheel several times for access to those hub bolts. THANK YOU for saving me probably $600 !!!!! Terrifiic detail on this video!!

  • @5150crazyman Thank you for checking us out. We carry a great variety of repair parts for your Dodge Durango on 1aauto.com

  • i was just wondering do you have to take the axle out to take the hub off or does that just make it easier?

  • @MoparMadness93 You have to slide the axle out to get the hub off.

  • You mention that the process is the same for the 97' through 04' Dakota...I just replaced my upper and lower ball joints as well as the outer tie rod ends in the front of my 1998 Dakota but I also need to change the wheel bearing on the drivers side, is there any difference with the passenger side vs. the drivers side hub assembly? And does the drive axle have to be removed in order to remove the hub or does it just give you more room to remove the three 22 MM bolts on the back of the hub?

  • @6983jt The drivers side should be fairly similar to the passenger side. You may have to remove the axle to be able to access the bolts.

  • I just wanted to say thanks this just help me make up my mind on doing the job myself. firestone wanted $822 for a new bearing and upper ball joint and fornt end alignment. doing it my self il save over $600. Thanks again for this, you have no idea how much this helps out for people that havent done this before!!!!

  • @randyusmc Thank you for watching. There's a link to that part on our website in the info. section of the video. If you need them for your vehicle.

  • You are the master.

  • i must say keep it up best videos ive seen on youtube for repairs for dakotas yet

im gonna check my problems tomorrow

  • Thanks. I have to replaqce the same thing on my wifes Durango. You made it so easy, thanks again!

  • Thank you! You are doing the Lord's work here!

  • @Icriedtoday LOL...I hope the Lord is happy with me.

  • just wanted to say that your vid helped alot. first time doing a wheel bearing ever. had to do it a bit different while trying to get the axle out but got it. JUST FOR REFERENCE TO EVERYONE THAT FOR A 97 DAKOTA YOU WILL NEED A 7MM HEX FOR STOCK CALIPERS AND A 6MM FOR AFTER MARKET. I am not sure about any other year but will look into it and find out. otheerthanthat this video is dead on. HOW DO I GET MY SPEEDOMETER TO WORK AGAIN ?

  • Just 1 word. "Awsome"

  • On reassembly i think you forgot to mention to plug back in the ABS Sensor plug.

  • @benshivd I did mention feeding the harness but you are right I did not talk about connecting it. So yes make sure you reconnect the ABS harness and route it as it was routed originally.
