Bill Moyers is very independent and has always been that way. There are instances in which his perspectives and opinions do become mainstream or become those of particular political parties. But he has always stood his own ground and doesn't hesitate to criticize any administration no matter which party they represent.
I use think Moyers was a balanced, reasoned man. I think it is clear he has lost his mind. He is the thing he hates. On June 24, President Obama admitted that he and his family would not participate in the government regulated health insurance plan being proposed for all the rest of us. Members of Congress would also be exempted from the public plan they think is good enough for the rest of us. Consider the large increases in executive compensation relative to the worker wages. I certainly care about freedom. Tell me more about what you think freedom is, and be as intellectual as possible about it. Also, please consider how other individuals and organizations, much less accountable than government, do not factor into your derivation of freedom.

You need to think more critically about the assumptions you make about freedom, which I can go into if you are unable to reassess what you think. Additionally, socialism involves giving control of the means of production to the workers and replacing capitalism, which I assure you neither are happening to any degree. The United States does not even have a major social democratic party, officially or unofficially, unlike much of the rest of the western world.

Bill Moyers... I love you. It's nice to hear someone speaking the truth and in such pretty words, backed up by facts.
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But when people die because they don't have access to health care, when people are NOT FREE to leave a job they hate, to pursue happiness, because it would mean they lose their health care, then I say that we are not only "free," but that our current profit driven health care system is against basic American values.

On June 24, President Obama admitted that he and his family would not participate in the government regulated health insurance plan being proposed for all the rest of us. Members of Congress would also be exempted from the public plan they think is good enough for the rest of us. If it is so good for the American people, why do our elected officials want to exempt themselves?

My kids were raised on sesame street and later years frontline,american experience and pov....In june of this year my youngest the last of the university grads, graduated with a phd and I did'nt mind one bit to buy a cookie monster...

i think the entire essay is based on the flawed premise that somehow Obama is a magical angel who can come out, say he wants these things to happen and then it happens as he wanted. there are no magic angels in government and Obama certainly is not one.

What I DO expect is for my political party, the Democratic Party, to have a backbone! -- and stand up for the AMERICAN PEOPLE against the interests of a runaway corporate culture.
Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has proven itself -- time and time again -- to be in bed with the greedy interests it SAYS it opposes.
THE PEOPLE have VERY LITTLE real representation -- and the "good cop, bad cop" routine between the two political parties is wearing very thin.

I used to look up to Bill Moyers and call him a journalist. Not any more. A "public option" has not worked any where in the world and most call it what it is; "SOCILISM".
No matter how nice you want to make it sound it is just another piece of our freedoms being flushed under the banner of "shared responsibility".
This again makes capitalism a bad word when it is what made this country great.
No one is gaurentted health care or a good job.

There was a time when I thought it inappropriate that PBS was funded by the government while I lived in an area where it was unavailable.
My kids were not raised on Sesame Street. In December, however, all three of them will be college grads, one with a post-graduate degree and I never had to buy a Tickle Me Elmo.
After watching this video, I'm just glad that the type of elitist arrogance Moyers displays was never regularly available in my home.

If I could choose to be in an expanded and improved Medicare for life, I would in a heart beat. A plan that could never be taken away. From Birth to Death. Everyone sharing in the risk. Everyone, every corporation, paying into a fair system. It's time for a complete rethinking of our broken profit driven health care system.

What good is a high paying job if the money is sucked into overpriced healthcare? I came to a country with nationalized medicine and now can afford to eat better, I feel richer, but I suppose if you are so wealthy you would not notice the difference? The small company I worked for in the US could not afford health coverage for us, they would have been happy to have that cost shared. Wow the word socialized is getting cut out of the newspeak dictionary, isn't it?

I hope Obama is up to the challenge Bill lays down for him..to be the leader on this health care reform, rather than passing it off to Congress.
He said even if it makes him a one term president, he was going to see this happen. The point is, what kind of plan will he be willing to "compromise" for? A "trigger" that is worthless, or a full on Public Option, no if's and's or but's.
These are our lives that people want to play politics with and it won't be forgotten in 2010.

I love how bill says America and it's people are the greatest show on earth, deranged, red white and blue cooks. I am a conservative a proud American and if he thinks my country is so bad then he needs to quit with the name calling and work for what he believes. Many people have paid a great price for our right to disagree with one another. I just wish he and others wouldn't take that privilege and disrespect it like that. It made his actual point redundant.

I am a 9th to 12th generation american on many lines, decended from ancient planters in VA, from the litterature and geneologies I have read, we have always had a 'pride' in how eccentric we are, Franklin in the French court is a great example. He means it as a loving criticism, just as I 'love' libertarians for shouting out, and protecting civil liberties and I 'love' socialists for thinking about the health the weakest in society, we are Americans siblings, faults and all.

Moyers is the best kind of patriot: the kind who's not afraid to see our problems and roll up his sleeves. There's no virtue in blind patriotism that isn't willing to acknowledge and fix problems. Yes, I love this country as much as you--but I am not blind to what's wrong. We all need to talk openly on this point--and stop threats of violence.

Good thing in Obama's plan the government would not make these decisions. There are no death panels. The point of the plan is to protect individuals from the high prices of corporations, and to make sure health care can be provided to everyone

On the subject of healthcare, the reason why it should not be nationalized is clear. Every man has a right to his own life and property, and as such his life and property can not be forcefully taken from him and given to another.

People who cry socialism in regards to health care obviously have no faith in their fellow man or country. Remember we are all in this together and have more to loose by not doing anything than doing what we know is right and that is removing corporations from the power equation. I put my trust in people not institutions and that, consistently, is Moyers message. For you real "patriots", how about I pay your share of taxes that support PBS and you pay for the F-22, Star Wars and more death?

Moyers had it right. The fight is inevitable. it's the people vs. the Corporations. It can't be avoided. The products are garbage. Their made by the cheapest workers that can be exploited wherever on the planet they can be found. Government is to compromised to regulate by the vast amount of money spent to influence opinion and elections. Even the stockholders end up being cheated. The Jets take off, loaded with money, but all of humanity screams for better treatment.
