This angle worked to perfection because 1.) Lawler, himself was put in the hospital at some point. Andy didn't lose all the time he was in Memphis and 2.) Jerry Jarrett, Lawler, Hart, and Kaufman all took their time to work this angle. From 1982 to 1983???

Yeah that was my first thought too. As soon as Idol (who I had heard of and read about when I was little in PWI) opened his mouth I thought "Oh that's where Steve Austin got everything". According to Wikipedia (I know, I know) Kaufman found out around Thanksgiving '83. In some of the videos I'll post shortly leading up to their boxer vs wrestler matches you'll see that Andy just didn't look good. His cough also becomes more apparent in some of his interviews.

@popculturestu you're right. In that last interview that Jerry Lawler had with Andy right before their last match on November 21,1983. Andy just didn't look good at all. He looked so ill. Of course, during that last match, you couldn't tell how Andy looked because the video wasn't that good of quality and most of the footage was filmed from a distance. But Popculture, thank you for posting all these videos. These videos show the true comic genius of Andy.
