They are a video container format with limited support, very limited but it can house all types of audio and video formats but because it's not a standard not many hardware devices implement it.
what, does it have better quality than other video files..cuz i know you can play alot of video files on your ps3..i have some mp4s, mpgs, avcs, etc..

I would love that too, unfortunately only a few games support this. 1 game that I know of is Motorstorm 2. However this only works on offline games and once you get online, it shuts down your music. It would really be great to play your own music while gaming. I'll be playing Prodigy on every game :P

ever since i got this update my ps3 has been freezing after about 15 minutes after i turn it on. the controllers and my headset just disconnect. any1 else having this problem????????
i just connected my ps3 to the internet this morning, and I was asked for that update, and after like 4 hours I only downloaded 52%, and I tried to have a look at the percentage now again, but I cant see any image, and I`m using HDMI cable, I changed my cables to the primary one and still no image, I dnt want to turn the ps3 off in case il hav to do the update again... any ideas whats the issue that I cant see the screen?
Sony need to get off their asses and give us back the software PS2 emulation they took. In PAL regions, we never had hardware backwards compatibility, and sure, the software emulation sucked, but there was no need to get rid of it. The only people who wanted THAT were also saying "give us hardware emulation". Sony have joined "the list" for much the same reason as FOX: gross incompetence.

My PS3 never been hacked. The best thing to do is to restart your PS3. If you have an external drive then you can back up your saved things. You might be able to back up the things on your PS3 and it will not be lost I think. I don't know.

Yes you can play PS1 and PS2 games on PS3. You got to have either a 20gb, 60gb, or first version of 80gb in order to play the old games. Plus they all have 4 USB slots. If a PS3 constole only have 2 USB slots then it will not play the old games.
The newer ones - like I have - do not. Sony cut costs by not including the chip needed to be backwards compatible. It also only has a USB, and not the other data source readers of the older versions.

If you go to playstation store you can download ps2 system for free then you can play any ps2 game or you can download the ones they have at playstations store fo about 5-10$.
they already did with 2.40 very few games have it though. motorstorm pacific rift, warhawk, pixeljunk monsters, burnout paradise, pain, midnight club los angeles, and high velocity bowling. those are the only games i know that have custom soundtrack i'm pretty sure there's more however

yeah, either sony needs to unlock all 8 cores, or game developers need to start coding for 8 cores so we can get 1080p on new games god damn it! the reason ps3 cant run newer games in 1080p is because game developers code them to run on 3 cores, this is because the 360 has 3 cores, so the games also have to run on 3 of the playstations cores- now 3 xbox360 cores are more powerfull than 3 ps3 cores, but the ps3 has 8 cores and thats why (overall) its a more powerfull console.

Btw, look at gears of war 2. Thats it. Thats the 360's max. Now, look at Killzone 2. Graphically beautiful, smart AI, great gameplay, 7.1 surround sound(Theater) And yet, it only uses 60% of the ps3's power.
So we have yet to scratch the surface what the PS3 can do.

Yes you can play PS1 and PS2 games on PS3. You got to have either a 20gb, 60gb, or first version of 80gb in order to play the old games. Plus they all have 4 USB slots. If a PS3 constole only have 2 USB slots then it will not play the old games.

The newer ones - like I have - do not. Sony cut costs by not including the chip needed to be backwards compatible. It also only has a USB, and not the other data source readers of the older versions.

Try downloading it off the playstation website using your computer then using a USB flash drive to transfer it to your PS3.

wut r u guyz talkin bout? call of duty 4 and world at war are both in 1080p. so is gta4 and midnight club. if u ain't gettin 1080p with those titles go to display settings / custom and uncheck 720p and 1080i. otherwise it will default to 720p.

my ps3 doesnt donlad the whole 2.60 version, it only downloads 14% and is very very slow to get there, and then it tells me that i have my network configurations but everything is fine... PLS HELP!!!

perreo: just download the update from the ps3 website onto your computer, then you can install it to your ps3 using an external hd, or a thumbdrive (very cheap) using "update via external storage"

Which is unfortunatelly not in production... In recent polls most PS3 users wants PS2 backwards compatibility back. Sony just can't neglect that fact. Some says that's will never happen but then some others says that software emulation is 99% finished and will be included in firmware update in near future. What is the truth?
As far as I know, Sony also has plans to release PS2 classics in their webshop for buying and downloading. You can't run then unless your PS3 has PS2 support. RIght?

If you go to playstation store you can download ps2 system for free then you can play any ps2 game or you can download the ones they have at playstations store fo about 5-10$.

they already did with 2.40 very few games have it though. motorstorm pacific rift, warhawk, pixeljunk monsters, burnout paradise, pain, midnight club los angeles, and high velocity bowling. those are the only games i know that have custom soundtrack i'm pretty sure there's more however

2.60 just bricked my ps3... called up sony and denies any problem... this is like 2.4 all over again. I think they do that on purpose so you have to send it in to get repaired. So much for quality assurance.

yeah, either sony needs to unlock all 8 cores, or game developers need to start coding for 8 cores so we can get 1080p on new games god damn it! the reason ps3 cant run newer games in 1080p is because game developers code them to run on 3 cores, this is because the 360 has 3 cores, so the games also have to run on 3 of the playstations cores- now 3 xbox360 cores are more powerfull than 3 ps3 cores, but the ps3 has 8 cores and thats why (overall) its a more powerfull console.

Well, KZ2 is using 60% of Cell (processor), I think is a great perfomance.

A lot of games in PS3 can suport 1080 I don't know where you get the Idea that PS3 doesn't have games with 1080.

Yeah, PS3 is better in everything then the 360 because it came out a year later. The ps3 has RSX and more then enough room on the bluray disk. The only thing I think the 360 is capable of... well, I wouldnt know. I dont have a ps3.
Btw, look at gears of war 2. Thats it. Thats the 360's max. Now, look at Killzone 2. Graphically beautiful, smart AI, great gameplay, 7.1 surround sound(Theater) And yet, it only uses 60% of the ps3's power.
So we have yet to scratch the surface what the PS3 can do.
