You may see it labeled as such on the ballast. Another hint is if there is a 'starter', a little can that is present in magnetic ballast installations. But my suggestion is to bypass the ballast in all cases as it further reduces the energy consumption. Please have a qualified electrician do the work to insure your own safety.
