Saw them last Friday night in Brisbane (Dec 09)... and Mansfield Tavern crowd got right into the 'unofficial chorus' - even my 19yo step daughter and her 'indie-emo-etc' boyfriend were singing merrily along. In our group was an old school mate who is a massive angels fan... and when me and my mate saw them together back in the early 80s on the Gold Coast I vaguely remember some people in the crowd singing it... but it wasn't a full on part of that number then. So it's been there nearly 30 yrs.

like altul17 said, there was never really any good recording of the crowds at any of their earlier concerts (as with most concerts).... it started (as i've been told), they were playing in a pub, as they did in their early days, and a couple of guys started shouting it out from the first chorus... as the song went on, more people joined in... the band loved it so they told the crowd the following night and it grew... on the 1983 (i think) re-release, they included crowd "no-ways" in the track

Iheard this a few months ago during and Interview with the band on the ABC. they were playing at Rockhampton and were on the 3rd encore, the song itself never sold well as a single so they never played it live. As they had pretty much run out of songs to play Never gonna see your face was about the only one left. When they played it the crowd chanted and they weren't sure what was going on at first. After that gig they added it to the set list and everyone seemed to know the unofficial "chorus"

I was in the audience that night. To answer the question of why the crowd doesn't look like they are singing: I don't think they got a good recording of the crowd during the performance, so in the gap between shows Brian got up and sang the chorus over and over, encouraging us to make some noise, they recorded the crowd screaming then. So it looks like no one is singing because, well, no one really is. they just dubbed the sounds in later. He was still great though.
