I think the forecasting models are useful but I would like to see the actual data of what we have received. The Blackcat and radiation network sites appear to be pretty useless since I can't even click on any of the monitoring stations and get any figures. maybe that is my browser but I see this as pretty useless. can anyone point me in the right direction?

Some areas along the front range (the eastern suburbs) are even a few hundred feet higher. Ontop of the mountains, well, much higher up. When you check the scale on the right side, the scale begins at 0.1 for caesium, but the scale for iodine starts at 1, and the scale for xenon starts at 10.
If this is accurate would it not mean that, say, a blue level in the xenon chart is actually 100 times stronger than a blue level for caesium?

So the amount of caesium that is problematic for humans (apparently even 0.1 concentration of caesium) would be different from the amount of xenon, which must begin to affect humans at concentration of 10 - can't see fine print, maybe 10 parts per million? Therefore, to use a scaled chart to represent the relative DANGER of each isotope, the scale used for each needs to be different.

It may be difficult to make out in the video, but if you go to the actual website you will see that the scale is not measured in ppm, but in Bq/m^2.
As far as I understand it, (and I'm no expert) using this measurement, these charts would be showing - not the concentration of radioactive isotopes in the atmosphere - but rather the actual amount of radiation per square meter as measured in Becquerels.
I don't know why they would use Becquerel per square meter when we're talking about cubic meters of air (since the elevation does matter on this map). It's a very difficult measurement to understand. Anyway, radioactive elements are unstable-going through a decay process down to lesser energy. The Becquerel is based on the amount of material it takes to have one decay transformation every second. So multiply the Bq number by 60 and you get the old geiger counter result - Counts per Minute.

Ingestion is serious when there is enough material to continuously radiate over long times. But in this case we're talking single atoms, the wonder is that we can even detect such miniscule quantities from Japan. A single cesium 137 shooting off its single gamma ray and becoming stable barium 137 will do exactly nothing to you.

The forecasts do a fine job predicting where a given day's release might go, but unless they really know how much radioactivity is released in the first place estimates of Bq/m^3 are just guesses. And the narrator doesn't have any idea what the levels in any of these forecasts translate into as far as health effects.

xenon has a half life of years, while cesium has a half life of days to years. Remember that radiation accumulates over time so even very large dosages add up to be dangerous for your health over time.

Although this information is somewhat alarming, the levels are (if accurate) are extremely low. .1 to 1.0 bq/m3 is very low. With Radon for instance, mitigation within someone's house starts at 200.00 bq/m3 We need to be aware of water sources primarily, because thats where the rain (and radiation) will accumulate. I think the best advice is to know where your water is coming from for the foresee-able future to avoid concentrated levels. Nuclear power BLOWS. Great work Dutch.

But, only if the person is outdoors and up in the jetsteam at 5,000 - 30,000 feet elevation where these readings are being taken.
At ground level, it would be less and close to undetectable. Indoors even less.

The US is seeing worst case 20 Bq/M2. That is 20/36,000 = .0055% of what Tokyo is receiving = .111uSv, but that is in the atmosphere.
The typical person receives 6,200 microSieverts exposure in a year (about .71 microSieverts /hr).
So the radition from Fukishima is raising the average person's radiation exposure (In the US) from .71 microSieverts /hr up to .82 microSieverts /hr.

Back in the early 1990's there was a nuclear scientist who defected from Russia.. he wrote a couple of books, and died in the early 2000's from being poisoned. I remember one of the things he said in his book was that American women were in big trouble because of the hair products they used. He said Conditioners n such acts like a magnet for radiation. First off, thanks Dutch for bringing the woweather site to my attention, but there's one thing about the flexpart simulations I just don't get.
When you check the scale on the right side, the scale begins at 0.1 for caesium, but the scale for iodine starts at 1, and the scale for xenon starts at 10.
If this is accurate would it not mean that, say, a blue level in the xenon chart is actually 100 times stronger than a blue level for caesium?

@shmadz Different elements, isotopes, etc. are dangerous in different concentrations. So the amount of caesium that is problematic for humans (apparently even 0.1 concentration of caesium) would be different from the amount of xenon, which must begin to affect humans at concentration of 10 - can't see fine print, maybe 10 parts per million? Therefore, to use a scaled chart to represent the relative DANGER of each isotope, the scale used for each needs to be different.

It may be difficult to make out in the video, but if you go to the actual website you will see that the scale is not measured in ppm, but in Bq/m^2.
As far as I understand it, (and I'm no expert) using this measurement, these charts would be showing - not the concentration of radioactive isotopes in the atmosphere - but rather the actual amount of radiation per square meter as measured in Becquerels.

I don't know why they would use Becquerel per square meter when we're talking about cubic meters of air (since the elevation does matter on this map). It's a very difficult measurement to understand. Anyway, radioactive elements are unstable-going through a decay process down to lesser energy. The Becquerel is based on the amount of material it takes to have one decay transformation every second. So multiply the Bq number by 60 and you get the old geiger counter result - Counts per Minute.

Ingestion is serious when there is enough material to continuously radiate over long times. But in this case we're talking single atoms, the wonder is that we can even detect such miniscule quantities from Japan. A single cesium 137 shooting off its single gamma ray and becoming stable barium 137 will do exactly nothing to you.

All the talk about "mid-range" and the color of the plume forecast is pretty meaningless. The forecasts do a fine job predicting where a given day's release might go, but unless they really know how much radioactivity is released in the first place estimates of Bq/m^3 are just guesses. And the narrator doesn't have any idea what the levels in any of these forecasts translate into as far as health effects.

Although this information is somewhat alarming, the levels are (if accurate) are extremely low. .1 to 1.0 bq/m3 is very low. With Radon for instance, mitigation within someone's house starts at 200.00 bq/m3 We need to be aware of water sources primarily, because thats where the rain (and radiation) will accumulate. I think the best advice is to know where your water is coming from for the foresee-able future to avoid concentrated levels. Nuclear power BLOWS. Great work Dutch.

@babyjustwin1 I agree , we have been well and truly nuked , this radiation isnt going to stop any time soon so even low levels would over time have a cumilative effect, N power stations are just bombs waiting to be detonated as and when required , a child could figure it out
